Research

This document discusses the nature and types of research. It defines research as original work done to answer a question or solve a problem. Action research is described as a practical approach aimed at applying research results through constant exchange between researchers and subjects. Descriptive research involves collecting and summarizing data without defining relationships, while action research develops new approaches to solve practical problems through documented changes in methodology. The document also outlines characteristics of research like being systematic, logical, reductive, replicable, and generative. Finally, it discusses the purpose of research in informing decisions and solving problems.

THE NATURE OF RESEARCH

Research involves original work in answering a

question or solving a problem . Of the several
different research approaches available, this
book focuses on those approaches which can be
applied to solve questions or problems that are
directly related to everyday life . The technique
of community involvement in practical issues is
often called action research . In this chapter, you
will find an overview of the steps needed to
develop an action research plan . Common errors
that are made in the research process are
discussed, from the perspective of both insiders
and outsiders to the community .

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH

There are many different ways to approach a

research question . Researchers
from different areas of study develop different
methods to focus
upon a particular aspect of the question . These are a
few of the things to
consider in choosing an approach :
Topic/ issue/ concern
Purpose of the project

Resources (such as time, people, funds)

Descriptive Research
The purpose of descriptive research is to describe
accurately situations
or events, such as the characteristics of a population, a
social condition, or
a particular topic . In the process of descriptive
research, data are
collected and summarized, but relationships between
sets of data and
predictions are not usually defined . Descriptive
research is one of the
more basic types of research, requiring fewer research
skills, yet is a very
valuable tool for community development . Most of the
techniques
presented in this handbook could be termed
descriptive, in the broadest
sense of the word .
Action Research
The purpose of action research is to develop new approaches to solve
questions or problems that are directly related to everyday life . A very
practical approach, action research is aimed toward applications of the
research results through a constant exchange between the researcher and
the people or events being researched . Action research differs from most
research approaches in that changes often occur in the original research
methodology when these changes are documented as part of the results .

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

Research is systematic: A researcher should employ a structured procedure. From the beginning to the end should
follow certain pre-established rules and regulations.

Research is logical: Without manipulating ideas logically, the scientific researcher cannot make much progress in any
investigation.

Research is Reductive: As a practical phenomena, reductivity refers to reducing researcher's responsibility. This means
that findings of one researcher is transferred to other researchers to prevent them from repeating, the same research.
In other words, research is in most cases, additive. Findings are accumulated, sometimes from one generation to
another, in order of scientists to use them in their endeavor to uncover the mysterious of nature.

Research is replicable:in such situations, in which other researchers are interested in previously investigated question,
they may want to confirm the findings of previous research in new environment, with a new group of subjects, or at a
different point in time.

Research is generative: This is one of the most valuable characteristics of research because answering one question
leads to generating many other new questions.

PURPOSE OF rESEARCH

Research is designed to solve a particular existing problems so there is a much larger audience eager to support research
that is likely to be profitable or solve problems of immediate concern.  We also must understand how research impact
our decision making.  Most people make decisions without gathered informations to back them up.  Only few do.  The
problem is most people aren't patient enough to put in the effort.  Research requires time, effort, and sometimes money
to have the evidence you need to make a sound decision that's why many avoid it.   The research you do and evidence
you gathered will have impact on your future.  Be adviced, considered the risks or consequences of making an important
decision with inadequate evidence.

In conclusion research is very vital to our everyday decision making.  It arms you from wrong informations and save time
and money.  It is important to your success as you take on life's challenges and career decisions making.  But be careful
though, becasue too much research without action on what you' re learning is not good either.
