Student Code of Conduct

Background

Lakeview School is an alternative program located in urban, Durham, NC. It is designed for

students in grades 3-12 who have a history of chronic misbehavior and/or have received long-

term suspension, short-term suspension, or is incarcerated.

Lakeview School implements seven components to serve the unique needs of its students. Staff

collaborates with students, their families, and agencies that are involved, to develop behavior

intervention plans to help students make a successful transition back to their base school.

Students remain in the program until they have served out their suspension, or until they have

mastered the goals set for proper transition back to their home schools or graduation. Lakeview

School supports each student by employing an organized methodology that capitalize on

educational achievement, encourages continuous learning, and successful skills acquisition for

promotion and effective transitioning.

Narrative

The purpose of a Student Code of Conduct is for the institution of expectations for

students within a specific school. The guidelines written therein should correspond with the

school’s mission and vision. Moreover, the guidelines should also regulate student conduct and

behavior. PSEL Standard 3d states that effective leaders develop student policies and address

student misconduct in a positive, fair, and unbiased manner.

Lakeview School aspires to motivate students to reach their full potential while providing

a safe and positive learning environment that will prepare them to transition to their base school,

move on to college, or in the workforce as productive citizens.

Students have the responsibility to come to school prepared for success and ready to

learn. They should show dignity and mutual respect for one another as well as for staff. Digital

learning is incorporated into all core and most elective courses. There are also credit recovery

classes that several of our students are enrolled in. Therefore, students must follow adhere to the

guidelines set forth related to internet usage. Inappropriate usage includes, but are not limited to

cyberbullying, using someone else’s username or password, intentional abuse, and plagiarism.

Something as simple as the way someone dresses says a lot about who they are and the

depth of their character. Dress code is a very important policy that should be communicated to

students with empathy and sensitivity. Staff should keep in mind that some students lack proper

clothing and that they should be culturally sensitive to those from marginal groups.

PSEL Standard 5a states that effective leaders build and maintain a safe, caring, and

healthy school environment that meets that the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs

of each student. Gang activity such as gang signs, dropping “flags”, and initiating fights are

prohibited. Lakeview is located in gang territory and many of our students belong to gangs.

School personnel and resource officers should be vigilant and should report these activities to the

proper authority promptly. The use of tobacco, tobacco products, drugs, and alcohol is

prohibited. Lastly, weapons of any kind should not be found on any persons. Violation of the

three policy rules expressed above will result in immediate expulsion.

PSEL Standard 5c states that effective leaders provide coherent systems of academic and

social supports, services, extracurricular activities, and accommodations to meet the range of

learning needs of each student. Teachers and staff should not refuse students’ accommodations

or modifications that are written in their IEP or 504 Plan. Moreover, teachers and staff should be

careful to fulfill the contents written therein. In the case that a student’s IEP is mismanaged or

out of compliance, parents can request due process.

Effective communication and instruction of policies produce desirable results. Staff

members and administration should be firm, fair, and consistent showing no partiality. One

would be surprised at how well students respond to structure.
