Introduction to Digital Learning

Digital Learning is a competency education solution that helps educators and

students with the means to drive better learning outcomes and gain mastery over
their subjects respectively.

Delivering skills-training to a geographically widely-distributed population in a

cost-effective manner naturally points to online education. In a country where
Internet cafes are ubiquitous even in remote areas, and the population is becoming
increasingly net-savvy, bringing skill-education to each citizen's doorstep is a
realistic goal.

A hosted learning solution would be ideal in this scenario, both in terms of

simplicity of infrastructure requirements and cost-effectiveness. Where Internet
facilities are sparse, traditional vocational training institutions and NGOs can
bridge the last-mile with ILTs or blended models. Content may be tailored to the
proficiency and even learning-style of the learner. The short half-life of content is
well-addressed by iON Digital Learning solution, since content update is effortless,
immediate and cost-effective. No printing, publishing and transporting new
editions to far away places! Assessments and diagnostic tests can evaluate the
learner's level of learning and how ready he is to meet the demand. Historical
reports and certificates help keep track of credits earned so far and provide the
recruiter an objective idea of where the candidate fits. Content may be tailored to

provides far-flung users the environment to discuss content, work as a team and
build professional networks. The short half-life of content is well-addressed by

where the candidate fits.

Hosted Digital Learning has the additional advantage of being rapidly deployable
in terms of platform as well as content delivery. Anyone with access to a PC and
the internet, even one in an internet cafe - can get started. Courses can be short or
long duration, as appropriate. They can be made self-paced, with the ability to
pause and resume at their convenience to make them more viable for mothers and
youth engaged in other livelihood activities.

While just a small piece of the solution, hosted Digital Learning solutions may hold
the key to unlocking the potential of youth from the farther corners of India. With
their newly learned or updated skills, they may be able to find employment in
urban areas, get steady-paying jobs or simply just get back to the workforce (eg:
women returning from maternity break or displaced mill-workers). This
urbanisation of the country bodes well in general for the long-term prospects of the
economy. The short half-life of content is well-addressed by iON Digital Learning
solution, since content update is effortless, immediate and cost-effective. No
printing, publishing and transporting new editions to far away places! Assessments
and diagnostic tests can evaluate the learner's level of learning and how ready he is
to meet the demand. Historical reports and certificates help keep track of credits
earned so far and provide the recruiter an objective idea of where the candidate fits.
Even the farmer, who stays behind in the village, may take a course on new
farming techniques, seed quality and basic agricultural economics, improving his
own productivity and retaining more value at his end. The short half-life of content
is well-addressed by iON Digital Learning solution, since content update is
effortless, immediate and cost-effective. No printing, publishing and transporting
new editions to far away places! Assessments and diagnostic tests can evaluate the
learner's level of learning and how ready he is to meet the demand. Historical
reports and certificates help keep track of credits earned so far and provide the
recruiter an objective idea of where the candidate fits. At every level, in every
geographical zone, across genders and ages, when productivity thus improves,
India stands a genuine chance of enabling its own Baby Boomer generation to
actualize the demographic dividend dream

Importance of Digital Learning in IT Industry

To get a driver's license you not only have to pass the driving test but also the
road signs test. In essence, one needs to demonstrate one's theoretical
knowledge as well as practical skills to obtain any kind of certification. This
holds true for all professionals: doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, and so
on.

Digital technologies and trends are redefining our world every day. Disruptive
and innovative technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artif icial
intelligence (AI), cloud, analytics and others are changing business models and
driving exponential growth. Companies which are leveraging these are and will
continue to realize successful business outcomes. However, enterprises that are
harnessing the combinatorial power of all these technologies now are better
positioned to capitalize on the unlimited growth opportunities. By unleashing
the power of technology to drive enhanced customer experiences, robust
ecosystems, and unparalleled innovation and growth, yesterday’s traditional
enterprises are digitally transformed into today’s future -ready, or Business 4.0,
organizations.

In the travel industry, customer journeys begin long before customers board
flights. Dutch airline KLM is making significant investments in AI. KLM
keeps passengers up-to-date with flight information using its Amazon Alexa
voice recognition installations at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Moreover,
KLM’s AI-led systems provide customers with relevant information when they
contact the airline’s call centers. The airline is also transforming other parts of
its business which have direct impact on customer experience. KLM is
currently building systems to predict when an aircraft will require
maintenance. By tapping into the 25,000 data-delivering sensors in an A380, or
the 500GB of data produced by a Boeing 787 on an average flight, the airline
is harnessing insights to transform customer service by minimizing delays.

4
In the logistics industry, customer experience is enhanced wi th trouble-free,
on-time delivery. Nordic postal delivery service, PostNord is in the privileged
position of having a wealth of data at its fingertips. The company is capturing
much of this data to transition to a Business 4.0 enterprise: using sensors in
delivery vans to track distribution, while leveraging the Internet of Things to
carry out predictive maintenance in production facilities.

Additionally, PostNord is using AI solutions to cut mail delivery delays by

25%. Björn Ekstedt, PostNord’s Chief Info rmation Officer, says that the beauty
of such systems is that they weed out problems before they can take root. Not
only does this

drive productivity by reducing the amount of human intervention, it

dramatically improves customer experience.

Bolstering innovation and growth by connecting collaborative ecosystems

Companies which are succeeding with ground -breaking innovation and faster
growth aren’t doing it on their own. They are connecting collaborative
ecosystems that extend beyond the enterprise to span the entire value chain –
including customers, peers and partners, and they are relying on digital
technologies like IoT and cloud for success.

Initially, most companies moved from legacy in -house systems to cloud-based

solutions to reduce the overheads associated with maintaining hardware.
Today, companies are turning to the cloud to deploy cutting -edge solutions and
services with minimum lead time to take advantage of changing market
dynamics. Cloud technologies are also enabling growth – simplifying and

5
accelerating business integration following mergers and acquisitions by
offering companies access to infrastructure and services on demand.

The Netherlands’ leading bank, ABN AMRO is using cloud apps and providing
external developers access to their deve loper portal, turning regulations into
opportunities and gaining an ecosystem of co -innovators in the process. ABN
AMRO’s use of cloud and an expanded ecosystem of external developers
exemplify how Business 4.0 organizations are fueling growth and innovati on.

Fueling growth strategies by embracing risk

By combining an agile methodology with today’s powerful digital

technologies, companies can actually embrace risk, yet quickly adapt and
modify, continuously driving growth and profitability.

Transamerica, a leading provider of life insurance, retirement and investment

solutions, has embraced risk to transform the administration of its US -based
insurance and annuity business lines. By transitioning to a simplified, cloud -
enabled platform, Transamerica is fueling growth by enabling agile new
product development. Further, by simplifying and modernizing the servicing of
over 10 million insurance policies, Transamerica will save millions of dollars
each year.

Redefining business models to create exponential valu e

By enabling contextual insights and constant connectivity, digital technologies

allow companies to go from realizing incremental gains to unlocking
exponential value.
6
IoT, for example, connects machines, devices, sensors and systems to rapidly
process and interpret equipment data and intelligently manage performance to
prevent potential problems from becoming real ones. With continuous insights
into product performance and how users are interacting with devices or
services, companies now have unparallel ed opportunities to fuel innovation
across the product development lifecycle.

Rolls-Royce, a global leader in aerospace, engine development and the energy

and marine sectors, uses IoT-enabled technologies to eliminate manufacturing
and supply chain inefficiencies and to predict more effectively when
equipment maintenance is required. “IoT will allow us to take advantage of
fast-paced data innovation – including accelerating our application of
industrial AI and a range of other cutting -edge breakthrough opportunities,”
Neil Crockett, Chief Digital Officer at Rolls -Royce, says. Rolls-Royce is now
expanding its digital capabilities to deliver increased value from existing
services and introduce innovative services to customers across the group. Rolls
Royce’s use of IoT and adoption of a more innovative business model
exemplify how Business 4.0 organizations are driving exponential value.

The future is here

Some of the world’s most successful companies – KLM, PostNord, ABN

AMRO, Transamerica and Rolls Royce have embraced technology and risk to
redefine customer experience as well as traditional ecosystems and business
models.

Through technology driven business transformation, these and other future -

ready, or Business 4.0, organizations are positioned to lead thei r industries in
defining the future of business.

7
Why should regular education be any different then? Our schools and colleges
still follow a conveyor belt model of education. Students move from one grade
to another in 'batches', in a time -bound learning-grading structure. The short
half-life of content is well-addressed by iON Digital Learning solution, since
content update is effortless, immediate and cost-effective. No printing, publishing
and transporting new editions to far away places! Assessments and diagnostic tests
can evaluate the learner's level of learning and how ready he is to meet the
demand. Historical reports and certificates help keep track of credits earned so far
and provide the recruiter an objective idea of where the candidate fits. A lot of
educational institutions follow a standard approach for all students despite the
fact that no child is alike. This could limit innovation, creativity, and out -of-
the-box thinking. This causes the risk of significant learning gaps and poor
student outcomes, which ultimately affects their employability quotient.

According to National Employability Report 2014, only 18.09 percent of

graduates get jobs in India. While our conventional education system is
producing large number of graduates, it is not able to create employable
resources.

Competency-based Education: Moving From a Time-based System to a

Learning based Competency-based education (CBE) holds a promise of
enriching and enhancing student outcomes. It is defined as "as a system of
education, often referred to as proficiency or mastery based, in which students
advance upon mastery" according to Competency Works.

The unique differentiating principles of competency education are described in

Introduction to TCS Internal Learning Platforms

Tata Consultancy Services believes in on Job Learning policy, wherein they

provide and expect their employees to upgrade and apply their skills according
to their requirement in role.
Along with Mandatory training that each associates is asked to complete while
on-boarding the associate to a project they are also asked to complete role
based trainings which will help them in their on Job roles.
TCS generally follow AGILE methodology in work and also in learning.
AGILE methods talks about “Working while you are learning”. A employee
learns the skills required on his/her job roles.

The process of imparting education has undergone a sea change. With the
passage of time, the Nalandas and Taxilas of the East, and the cathedral and
monastic schools of the West have given way to a different breed of
universities and schools. And with the maturing of technology, education as we
know it now, is set to evolve further.

Educational institutions are moving from the traditional methods of teaching to

custom methodologies that promote ’personalized and adaptive’ learning. The
widespread use of technology in education is producing enormous amounts of
data. This is where data mining and machine learning techniques can come into
play to help institutions to ‘teach by learning’. While we may still be seeing
only the tip of the iceberg, here are a few futuristic applications that come to
mind:

The right guidance: One of the biggest challenges the education industry faces
is identifying areas of improvement and providing recommendations on
learning objects well in time. Learning Management Systems (LMS) provide
the perfect answer here. An LMS can help educational institutions capture
information on a student’s usage and preferences, such as the type of learning
object or training accessed, the frequency and time of access, as well as the
duration of time spent on a particular course. Since tests are often linked to
learning objects, these systems can make it a lot easier for teachers to ascertain
10
a student’s understanding of a particular subject area. Through Bayesian
analysis, the probability of students succeeding in summative assessments
based on their performance in formative assessments can be inferred. Te achers
can use this information to identify areas of improvement and help students
stay on course for their learning objectives.

Simplifying evaluations with automated grading of constructed response:

Educational institutes can now use machine learning te chniques to automate
the grading of constructed responses such as short answer questions or essays.
Using word count and frequency of usage, topics discussed, and other such
aspects as evaluation criteria, these automated systems will not only shorten
the grading cycle time, but also allow near accurate prediction of final scores
with the help of regression analysis.

Custom curriculum: Revising curricula and pedagogy has always been a time
consuming and expensive exercise, the success of its outcome often
unpredictable. Machine learning based prediction can help manage the content
and mode of teaching. Based on the performance and behavior of students – for
instance, if they drop a course or switch a major subject – program designers
can redesign the curricula.

A personal tutor: Machine learning plays a significant role in cognitive

psychology. These days, cognitive models are being developed to simulate the
problem-solving ability of a student. This includes understanding the
mechanism of human thought process, language processing, mathematical
reasoning, learning, and memory. An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is a
commonly used cognitive model for learning. By using adaptive learning
techniques built on a well-defined model of knowledge, it can provi de focused
guidance to students. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each student
related to problem solving, and provides individualized instructions.

Detecting misuse: Intelligent tutor systems often pose the ‘next best’ question
to students. A few such iterative cycles result in students knowing the correct
answers to questions, and advancing in the tutoring system, without really

11
having the required knowledge. Rather than learning, this allows the students
to cheat the system. The ‘training’, h ence, proves to be ineffective and may
even lead to drop-outs. Analyzing a student’s responses using machine learning
techniques can help identify gaming patterns and aids in redesigning tutorials.

These changes in the education industry may take a few ye ars to gain ground,
but they come with the promise of reducing the manual effort at the teachers’
end. And this is good news for everyone, since these techniques will allow
teachers to use the time saved to guide and support active learning. Put
together, this will also result in synergies between education, cognitive
science, and machine learning. The scores are out on this one – machine
learning techniques are set to change the learning process, and the broader
education system, for the better.

14
Cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), big data & analytics, and the
Internet of Things (IoT) are changing the world around us. They’re lowering
barriers to entry, blurring the lines between industries, and fuelling the disrupt ion
that’s keeping company chiefs on their toes.

To thrive in the fast-changing world of tech-driven innovations, businesses must

transform themselves. They need to recognize the opportunities facing them,
evaluate how each one will impact their business and sector, and prioritize the
ones that can catapult them ahead of the competition.

In studying three of the most digitally successful companies in the last 10 years –
Apple, Amazon and Netflix — we have found their leaders share five traits:

1. An abundance of imagination: It’s not the technology that gives competitive

advantage. It’s the application of that technology in new and novel ways to solve
business problems and customer pain points that helps companies win big.
Imagination drives executives to apply one or a combination of technologies to
come up with ground breaking and disruptive solutions.

2. Appetite for new and clashing ideas: Inviting, incentivising, and accepting new
ideas that fuel conversations, contradictions, and collaborations are what drive
innovation. Business leaders that understand this are able to attract new ideas and
invest in projects that can create significant advantages.

3. Relentless focus on increasing value to customers: Customers pay for what they
value. To ensure that the company keeps providing what customers value most,
leaders must ensure they’re always in the know and in -touch with their most loyal
customers’ needs and expectations.

4. Extreme calmness in the face of rising competition: As competition intensifie s,

leaders must keep their eyes on the prize and ensure they maintain a laser -like
focus on delivering unprecedented levels of customer value.

5. Being sentimental about top talent but unsentimental about what they do: It’s

15
important for leaders to take stock of those who make large contributions to their
business – those who put their heart into their jobs and align themselves to the
company’s goals. To keep up with changing times, leaders must ensure they value
such people but avoid shying away from auto mating and outsourcing their jobs if
required. But they then should reassign such talent to new, more important
positions.

Leaders who can sharpen these traits will be able to better navigate the
organization to a digital future, and ensure its success. I f you’d like to learn more
about how these traits can be nurtured and applied, read my article Executive
Traits for Recognizing the Bountiful Opportunities Ahead in the current edition of
our management journal, Perspectives.

With more than 20 years of global consulting experience, Krishnan Ramanujam is

an expert in the execution of complex, global transformational initiatives for
Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies.Krishnan focusses on driving
profitability for organizations by spearheading their evolu tion from IT-centric to

successfully facilitate this transition to realize maximum business value.

16
Explore the trend : A employee can enroll to various
course/competencies/certifications with the customized explorer.
The courses listed down in this section is customized based on the employee roles
and previous learning history.
The number one success factor for six sectors (banks, energy, CPG, automotive,
travel, and healthcare): integrating digital technologies with their existing
information systems. This is the top factor for all industries combined but is
especially critical for these six industries, which have invested huge amounts in
information technology over decades (especially banks).

The number one success factor for three other industries (insuranc e, telecom, and
industrial manufacturing): Having a clear and unified strategy for rethinking their
products and services and the business processes that support those off erings.
Insurance service and phone service can be highly digitized, and often are. T his
was rated utmost in importance by industrial manufacturers as well, which may
refl ect their interest in such technologies as 3D printing, embedded sensors, and
the like. General Electric Co. is emblematic of a major industrial company that is
investing heavily in digitizing its products for a world in which aircraft engines,
17
power turbines, and medical equipment send continual digital feedback on their
performance.

Each courses completion gives the employee benefits in points which is a major
factor in the employees appraisal cycle.

The dashboard for the employees shows the compliance status on each employee
for the courses they have enrolled.
Courses can be self enrolled or can be assigned by the line managers of the
learning based on the requirement.

18
T Factor : Talent Factor

T – Factor is a measure of your digital skills to your organization’s combined

digital skills depth. T – Factor is a learning platform which provides a competitive
approach towards learning.
It shows the comparison of your score to the total combined score of your
business unit. This gives employees a boost to perform more learning and
complete more competencies.

T-Factor measures your skill diversity in digital domain. It is a way to tell that
apart from your core competencies or expertise how good you are at other cross
technologies or domain. So the horizontal bar is the skill that you should have
knowledge about and vertical bar is your expertise in o ne or two skills.

In today's times where agile is the de facto methodology, people are required to
know skill like DevOps and cloud. So this becomes horizontal. You can choose
whatever expertise you want to develop like Data Science, modern data platform,
microservice, UI/UX etc. These will be contributing into your vertical bar.

To increase T-Factor complete courses in DevOps and cloud section. Chose any
one of the remaining ones and do courses on that track. In each section you will
have courses which are tagged with competency or part of a specialization.
19
Completing specialization courses have more weightage. Your competencies from
iEvolve is also a factor in T-Factor score. Higher the competency more T -Factor.
So increase your competency.

Since CEO has mentioned of T-Factor in his quarterly note, it has become
compulsory to attain a good score. Associates are getting reminder mails and
fliers on the same. To help with that there are courses which do not have hands on
and are more of theory based. So yo u can choose those. Some of them are Digital
Foundation and Cyber security, Digital marketing, mobile primer, RPA, story
telling, NPM, Digital Industries, Service Deployment and Discovery,
Infrastructure as Code etc.

Vertical part of T - The knowledge depth(expertise) you have in the desired s kill
set.
Horizontal part of The - A good level of understanding in a set of technologies
relavent for a software platform.

T-factor can be seen in your Fresco -play profile page

To increase T-factor -
1) Complete E1,E2 competencies in IEvolve for highly boosting your T -factor.
2) Completing courses in CLOUD and DevOps will award you more points.
3)Courses in Digital Foundation , Blockchain , moblie primer (in mobility and
waerables ) are easy to complete which may gi ve approx .025 points for each
course .

The first step in this ‘mammoth’ re -skilling programme was initiated in 2014 by
former CEO N Chandrasekaran with a vision to train one lakh TCSers on digital
technologies such as DevOps, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning.

“We did not know where to start. We had to reinvent ourselves, our courses, our
learning methods and our people’s aspiration.

“We wanted employees to come to our training voluntarily. We did not want to set

20
up class rooms and tell team leaders to send 100 or 200 people. We wanted to set
up a platform and make it voluntary for employees to use it. We succeeded in it,”
he said.

Fresco Play enables an employee from CEO to a trainee to access training module
in mobile, Web and seamlessly change between devices. “We made it palatable by
making the module 15 to 30 minutes. We designed it for modern TCSers as they
commute,” he said.

Nearly six lakh digital certifications have been issued from the system. This
translates to nearly three digital certifications per employee. This number will be
much higher at entry level, he said.

As soon as the certificate is issued, the information is loaded in the company’s

resource management framework. A team leader will know that there are many
people with competency in a particular domain and openly advertise for a
particular job in the system. An employee can apply for it or the opportunity can
drag the employee, said Viswanathan.

IT business is always about disrupting, and disrupting fast. In last 30 yea rs, the
industry has grown from $50 million to $150 billion and there was disruption in
every stage — right from Custom built software to advanced languages such as
Oracle, SAP to now the latest SMAC (social, mobile, cloud and analyitcs), he
said.

“Through re-skilling, we are driving the message that all of us need to re -skill
ourselves. Please invest time as the company has given you a training platform
that can be accessed through mobile device or even classroom,” he said.

It is also strong message to clients on how TCS enables its employees wherever
they are to get technically upgraded and that 2.14 lakh employees have gone
through digital certification. “We have innovated to disrupt the internal learning
platform,” he said. “Certification is an input i n to the performance appraisal
system. We don’t want to make this you do this but make it a culture. I can see the

21
culture happening. When 2.14 lakh employees have taken up a course, it reflects
the fact that is a consumption culture. Otherwise, the worse thing to do is set
target for everybody to do, and it may not work,” he said.

The various sections of learning in T – Factor are as shown below :

TCS Aspire (Pre ILP Online Training Program)
Tcs aspire (Online training program) is mandatory for all associates joining Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS) as freshers. Each one of you would have got the mail regarding Tcs Aspire – the pre-
ILP (Initial Learning Program). In simple words, Aspire is a mandatory learning program for all new
recruits of IT and EIS. It is an online interactive pre-learning program which will help you to
understand some basic concepts. This tcs training platform is especially designed for all those who are
not from IT background.

Through Aspire, you can brush up your basic software engineering concepts and develop your soft
skills. Foremost, to unlock your Aspire, you need to give 1 simple quiz and after that 2 courses
(Introduction to Computer Systems and Basics of Programming) will be unlocked. This aspire will
include courses followed by some chapters and quizzes. You have to go through the chapters and
after each chapter you have to give one quiz. Once you have given all the chapter quizzes, course
completion quiz is there.

How to complete a course

In order to complete a course in Aspire TCS, all the chapters within it must be completed. Each
chapter contains sub-topics. After each chapter, one chapter quiz with 40 multiple-choice questions
must be cleared. In order to unlock “Course Completion Quiz”, one must complete all chapter quizzes
of that particular tcs aspire course. At the end of sub-topic, “Ask Doubts” section is provided to clear
your doubts if any.

To pass each chapter, two attempts are given. The second attempt is available only if you are not able
to clear a quiz in the first attempt. However the scores assigned per answer in the second attempt is
lesser than that in the first. If you are unable to clear a quiz in the second attempt also, the next
module is automatically unlocked but miles earned in that quiz won’t be counted.

TCS Aspire courses are subdivided into chapters. In order to complete a course in Aspire TCS, all the
chapters within it must be completed. Each chapter contains sub-topics. After each chapter, one
chapter quiz with 40 multiple-choice questions must be cleared. In order to unlock “Course
Completion Quiz”, one must complete all chapter quizzes of that particular aspire course. At the end
of sub-topic, “Ask Doubts” section is provided to clear your doubts if any. There is no deadline to
complete individual course chapters and quiz but there is deadline to complete aspire and that is same
23
for everyone. But ou should complete aspire with good score and leader board rank to get early
joining.

Freshers training in tcs revolves around these 2 programs. Aspire is online learning program which
you have to complete before getting TCS joining letter and be eligible for ILP. You have to do this at
your home.

ILP will be held at tcs training centers and it is 90 days long training where you will get technical and
soft skills training. Here also more often you have to do online learning and for some days, faculty
will be available to guide and train you. After completing ILP, you will be deployed to real time
projects.

Redefining Talent Development with Digital Collaborative Learning

Collaborative Learning – Imperative for Talent Development

In today’s competitive market, it is not feasible to work without collaboration and a
network of teams. While learning is the core attribute of a learner, building an
association by developing people’s network that can harness learning in a collaborative
manner is the need of the hour.

While Talent Development is a set of integrated organizational HR processes designed

to attract, develop, motivate, and retain productive engaged employees, the goal is to
create a high-performance, sustainable organization that meets its strategic and
operational goals. This could be best achieved through collaborative learning.

Collaborative Learning is an educational approach that involves groups of learners

working together to solve a problem, complete a t ask, create a product/service, or
enhance their competence. The learning occurs through the exchange of ideas and other
people’s experiences, in a conducive environment where everyone is on the same page.

The biggest advantage of using collaborative learn ing as a means of talent development
is the fact that it increases potential for innovation and learning. When two or more
people come together in a collaboration, they each bring their competence to the table,
and learn from each other in the process.

The organizations are employing various methods of learning in order to better facilitate
talent development, such as, Classroom learning, Web -based or virtual learning, Group-
based learning, Peer-to-peer learning, or by providing other digitized learning
platforms. The output of this exercise can be maximized by involving the learner
throughout the process and encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences, thus
making it collaborative.

The Next Wave of Collaborative Learning Empowered by Digital

Social media is a useful tool for collaborative learning. Various platforms such as
Lynda (a learning initiative by LinkedIn), Coursera, Udacity, and EDX have come into

31
being, which are enabling people from all over the world to choose from a vast
collection of courses and enhance their skills. These platforms enable employees to
learn new concepts and interact with mentors as well as peers.

The digitized mechanisms, which can aid collaborative learning, include collaborative
communities: one-to-one, one-to-many (within one’s team), one-to-many (outside one’s
team), one-to-mentor, and many-to-many. The collaboration can be taken a step ahead
by introducing gamification to the system, wherein the learners and subject matter
experts (SMEs) are incentivized to be mo re involved in the process. The system can be
made more effective by adding the features such as:

 Publishing employee competence levels vis -à-vis peers, teams, groups,

departments, and so on
 Granting award points to people who answer the queries of the learners
 Creating a group as soon as people enroll for a course, where all the enrolled
participants can come together and interact
 Enabling a pre-course session or a virtual connect with the instructor before the
commencement of the course
 The design of the system has to be such that the desired response gets elicited
during the exercise.

However, the challenge in deploying collaborative learning will remain when it comes
to developing people on soft skills such as customer orientation, self -confidence
development, achievement orientation, and personality development. To help someone
change a behavioral pattern, one session / connect may not be enough and may require
to adopt a form of coaching. Further, if required, multiple coaches or cross -functional
peers along with the use of multiple optional tools can facilitate learning. The design of
the system thus has to be agile and scalable enough so as to accommodate these
challenges.

Collaborative learning can have a major impact on the morale of the team me mbers, and
will deeply impact the knowledge quotient and team spirit in any organization. It makes
it easier for people with lower self -confidence to come forward and contribute via these
learning mechanisms in smaller groups. Collaborative learning result s in improvement

32
of relations/ bonds within employees, which results in better creativity, and hence better
ideation, leading to increased productivity.

Finally, collaborative learning will always find momentum, if it is embedded within the
organization – i.e. aligned with values or business objectives. With the fabric designed
well, all employees are bound to experience increased on -the-job satisfaction and
continued growth.
