Agriculture As An Art and Science
Agriculture As An Art and Science
We all know that agriculture is the cultivation and breeding of animals, plants and other products
used to sustain and enhance life. We also know that it provides employment opportunities for
rural people on a large scale in underdeveloped and developing countries. It is an important
source of livelihood, food for the population, raw materials for the industry, foreign exchange,
and it is a major source for manufactured goods. An example of agricultural production is crop
production, which is classified into: food crops and commercial crops. The second is livestock
and poultry raising. Third, is fish production which is classified into: commercial fishing,
municipal fishing and aquaculture. But agriculture may be also defined as the science and art of
raising the products of the soil to satisfy human wants and needs. But why is it considered as
science and art of raising the products of the soil? For me, agriculture is considered as an art
because, we, people use different crops to make different products like bags made of abaca,
water lily (which they think is the best way to reduce more of it and create bags to sell in the
markets) and etc. Barong tagalog and baro’t saya made of pineapple fabric and coconut leaves.
Third example is slippers made of agar-agar which is from the sea. These slippers can be
recycled and use to create design like what a Filipino kid did to earn money. Farmers also think
ways on how to make their products more attractive so that many people will buy. For example
is a watermelon with the shape of square or rectangle. These products can be also used for
exports around the world. This is a very good example because we, Filipinos have a creative
mind to think of such ways to create products and turn it into very creative and beautiful
products that we can use and improve the country’s popularity just by advertising these products
that made out of the crops of our country. Also, many Filipino artist use agriculture as their
inspiration to create beautiful paintings with the picture of farmers harvesting crops such as
palays or corns. Also an example is a simple rice field, corn field and etc. For me that is the
reason why it is considered as an art. Then why is it considered as science? Well because there’s
a term “ Agricultural Science ” which means the study of agriculture. There are farmers who
creates and combine different crops to make a new product with the combination of the crops
combined together. They also study if they can use other alternatives to make their fruits or
vegetable, trees and etc. grow faster. The farmers also think ways to make a their product more
useful like turning them into something new, experimenting to make more income. They also test
if some products that is used to remove pests is effective by using one fruit before putting them
to all their plants, vegetables, fruits, trees and etc. For the people who gets their income in
fishing for companies and selling them in the markets. Some people raise fish and other aquatic
animals in their control also experiments by using other products if their aquatic animals’ food is
expensive they’ll use alternative to profit more without spending much. And for me that is the
reason why science is considered as agriculture. We must all know that agriculture is the best
because it is very important. Without agriculture, we cannot live a better life, a healthy life, more
meaningful way of living. Agriculture is the best way to improve our country’s income.
With agriculture, many people will have livelihood to support their family’s wants and needs.
Many people will have something to eat because our food consumption eats up the biggest chunk
of the income of the Filipino family.
