#2 REASONS FOR
PROBLEMS
In IELTS writing we often have to talk about the reasons for problems or some
factors that cause these problems. But saying that some problem is connected with
something is unlikely to improve your score. Here are 2 phrases that can be used
instead:
• irrevocably tied to
Example: A company’s success is irrevocably tied to personal leadership of its
owner.

• inexorably linked to
Example: Environmental pollution is inexorably linked to human activity.

#3 LITTLE EFFECT
In IELTS writing we often have to write that we think some measures will have
no effect and explain why or that there seem to be no advantages compared to the
number of disadvantages. But saying ‘no advantages’ or ‘little effect’ is unlikely to
improve your score. Here is a ‘secret’ word that can be used instead:

• infinitesimal
Meaning: something extremely small or very close to 0, or too small to be mea-
sured
Example 1: The advantages it brings are, however, infinitesimal when compared
with the harm it causes. (I can write so if I think that the disadvantages far outweigh
the advantages)
Example 2: However, there are people who believe that this measure will have
infinitesimal effect on public health. (I can write so if I think that some measure will
have little or no effect)

#4 LEADING TO NO
USEFUL RESULTS
• futile = pointless
Meaning: leading to no useful results

Example:
Topic 1: ‘Traffic jams are a problem in modern cities. So many people say that the
best solution is to build wider roads’. So your task is to explain in your essay whether
you think this measure will be effective or not. And why?
Or topic 2: ‘In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from
health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary
for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you
agree or disagree with this opinion?

health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary
for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you
agree or disagree with this opinion?

You may write something like this:

One compelling reason to introduce this measure is that .... + your idea and expla-
nations
On the one hand, introducing this measure seems more than cogent as ... + your
idea and explanations

#6 PROBLEMS
In IELTS writing we often have to talk about different problems and find solutions
to these problems. But saying that some problem is very difficult to solve is unlikely
to improve your score. Here are 3 words that can be used instead:
• insuperable (problems, difficulties, obstacles)
• insoluble (problems, questions)
• insurmountable (problems, difficulties, obstacles)

#7 EXAMPLE
In IELTS writing, examples can help you get a higher band score for Task Response
and Coherence. But using ‘for example’ and ‘for instance’ 20 times per essay is un-
likely to improve your score. Here is a good phrase that can be used instead.

• a prime example
Meaning: a very typical example of something

How can you use this phrase in your essay?

1) Indeed, SOMETHING is a prime example of how SOMETHING IS DONE
2) A prime example of how this scheme works is...

#9 ADVERTISING
Probably you’ve already noticed that advertising is one of the common IELTS
writing topics. Usually you are asked to explain how adverts make people buy
unneсessary things. But saying that advertisers use hidden tricks is unlikely to
increase your score. Here are 2 words that can be used instead:

• chicanery
Meaning: the use of deception or subterfuge to achieve one’s purpose
• artifice
Meaning: an artful stratagem, trick

How can you use these words in your essay?
