Introduction
 A machine is a device which recieves energy in
some available form and utilises it to do some
particular type of work.
 Machine elements is an individual component or
group of components to perform a specific
function.
 These elements are used for-
1. power transmission
2. holding the components
3. providing support
Introduction
 Every actuation or system need power or motion
to drive itself from source.
 Thus transmission of power from a source (such
as an engine or motor) through a machine to an
output actuation is needed to do all machine
tasks.
 This task can be achieved by different methods
of drives.
TRANSMISSION OF
MOTION AND POWER
MECHANICAL SYSTEM
Shafts
 A shaft is a rotating member/machine element,
which is used to transmit power from one place to
another.
 In order to transfer the power from one shaft to
another the various members such as pulleys, gears,
crank etc. are mounted on it.
 These members are mounted on the shaft by means
of keys or splines.
 The cross section may be solid or sometimes hollow.
 Types
 transmission shafts
 machine shafts (spindle)
 axle
Types of shafts
1. Transmission 2. Machine shafts
Used to transmit the It is short rotating shaft
power between the which forms an integral
source and the machine part of the machine.
1. Line shaft 1. Spindle
2. Counter shaft 2. crankshaft
3. Axle

It is non-rotating machine element

which is used to support rotating
machine elements like : wheels,
pulleys etc.
Transmission shaft
Holding elements
• These elements are used to hold various parts of the
machine.
• These includes—
 Nuts
 Bolts
 Pins
 Rivets
Supporting elements

 These elemens are used to support various

parts of the machine.
 These are: bearings, brackets, keys, etc
Bearings
 Bearing is a machine element
which supports another
moving machine element called
as journal.
 It permits the relative motion
between the contact
surfaces.
 There is friction and wear
 Lubricant may provided.
Types —
1. sliding contact bearing
2. rolling contact bearing
Types of Bearing

Sliding Contact Hydrodynamic Bearings

Bearings
Journal/Sleeve Hydrostatic Bearings
Types of Bearing
Keys
Key is a machine element usually made
of mild steel which is inserted between
the shaft and hub in order to prevent
relative motion.
Couplings
Coupling is a device used to connect two shafts
together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting
power.
Pump Motor
Coupling

• To provide connection of shafts of

units made separately
• To allow misalignment of the
shafts or to introduce
mechanical flexibility.
• To reduce the transmission of shock
loads
• To introduce protection against
overloads.
• To alter the vibration characteristics
Types of coupling
 Rigid
 Flexible
 Universal

Flexible coupling

Rigid coupling
precise shaft alignment is required
Clutch
• A Clutch is a machine member used to connect the driving
shaft to a driven shaft, so that the driven shaft may be
started or stopped at will, without stopping the driving
shaft.
• A clutch thus provides an interruptible connection
between two rotating shafts.
• Clutches allow a high inertia load to be stated with a small
power.
Types Of Clutch
Friction Clutches
A clutch enables two co-axial shafts to be engaged or
disengaged while at rest or in relative motion.
MECHANICAL
FASTENING
Fastener
A mechanical element which holds two or more parts of
machine of a structure is known as fastener. The process is
called fastening.
Fastener Classification
Detachable Fastener
It does not involves destruction during separation

THREADED
FASTENERS

NON-THREADED
FASTENERS
Non-Detachable Fastener
It involves destruction during separation
Non-threaded fastener
THREADED FASTENER
