MATH1920 Trigonometry

The document discusses trigonometry and provides examples of its applications. It defines the six trigonometric functions and provides examples of evaluating them given values in right triangles. It also discusses converting between degree and radian measures and solving right triangle problems, such as calculating the height of a balloon given the distance to it and the angle of elevation.

Question: Convert angle 235° from degree measure to radian

measure.

Solution: 𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 = 180°

𝜋
1° = 180 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 (1)

𝜋 235×3.14
235° = 235 × 1° = 235 × 180 = = 4.099444 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛

Question: Convert 175.455° to DMS(D = Degrees, M =

Minutes and S = Seconds) notation.

Solution: Firstly convert

0.455° 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓175.455° 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠

𝟏° = 𝟔𝟎′ = 𝟔𝟎 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔

𝟏° = 𝟔𝟎 × 𝟔𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒔 = 𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎′′ = 𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒔

𝟏′ = 𝟔𝟎′′

0.455° = 0.455 × 1° = 0.455 × 60′ = 𝟐𝟕. 𝟑′ [because 1° =

60′ ]

Now converting 0.3′ 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 27.3′ to seconds as:

0.3′ = 0.3 × 1′ = 0.3 × 60′′ = 18′′

Therefore 175.455° = 175°27′18′′

Question: Convert 100°45′30′′ to degrees and radians. Round

your answer to 3 decimal places.

Solution: Firstly convert to degrees as:

3
Mathematics for Information Technology II (MATH1920) Trigonometry

100°45′ 30′′ = 100° + 45 × 1′ + 30 × 1′′

1° 1°
= 100° + (45) × + 30 × =
60 3600
= 𝟏𝟎𝟎. 𝟕𝟓𝟖𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑°
Secondly convert degrees to radians as:

100.7583333° = 100.7583333 × 1°
𝜋
= 100.7583333 × 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 =
180
100.7583333 × 3.14
= 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠 = 1.757673148 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠
180
= 𝟏. 𝟕𝟓𝟖 𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒔
𝜋
[by using 1° = 180 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 ]

100°45′30′′ = 𝟏𝟎𝟎. 𝟕𝟓𝟖° = 𝟏. 𝟕𝟓𝟖 𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒔

a balloon in the distance, hovering over a point 15 km away on
level ground. If the angle of elevation to the balloon is 5° , what
is the height of the balloon from the street level?

Solution:

Question is to find AB= ?
