RDL Course Syllabus New

This 3 credit course on the physics of sensors aims to help students understand basic physical principles involved in sensing technologies. The course is divided into 6 units that cover topics like sensor characteristics, physical principles behind electric charge, resistance, capacitance and other effects. Students will learn to classify sensors, express sensor needs, and describe material properties for applications. The course also examines sensor materials, MEMS, occupancy detectors, velocity sensors, pressure sensors, light detectors, radiation detectors and temperature sensors. The primary textbook is the Handbook of Modern Sensors by Jacob Fraden.
