"People and Organization 1": Karthik Anantha ST10000907

Karthik took a Honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire which indicated he is primarily a reflector learner, followed by theorist and pragmatist. As a reflector, his strengths include being careful, thorough, and methodical. His weaknesses may include holding back from direct participation and being too cautious. He acknowledges reflectors can be slow to make decisions and not take enough risks. The learning styles theory provides insight but may not fully capture an individual's complex learning profile.

Report Aim: 1.1

India is home to thousands of entrepreneurs, I would like to be one such

person first with a focus to evolve as knowledgeful and competent graduate and secondly by
acquiring skills and resources to emerge as a novel entrepreneur. My country, India needs
more skilled innovators who can create and launch cutting-edge products and services at the
forefront of the technological tide.

To achieve one’s dream of success one has to choose the path that he has to take. This is the
reason that I have chosen to apply for a degree in UK that would give me the best skills one
could get to enhance his professional skills and educational qualifications. Studying in UK in
a good university and getting the best of experience in early stages would mould an
individual to achieve greater success in future. This is the most important reason for me to
get MBA from a reputed university. Several business tycoons from India who created
successful companies from scratch have influenced to coin my goals. More importantly, I
grew up in a family of business background and my parents are being nurturing some of the
basic skills and qualities for a business man. With the growing competition and
technological advancements, there is a constant need to develop new products for the end
users. Obtaining advanced education will certainly help to reach my future goals.

Background: 1.2

Business has always been fascinated me; I have been a diversified learner
incorporating not only the theoretical knowledge but also the practical real-time business
challenges. I did my dual bachelors degree in business management (BBM) and Diploma in
entrepreneurship (EDI) specializing in finance from Sri. MahaweerJain College, Bangalore,
India. And worked on a project work titled “A Study on project appraisal at KSFC,.and I
have worked on the gems and diamond business plan .I had been on an industrial visit to
HONG-KONG, MACAU (TSL jewellery industry) to understand the business methodology,
where I came across the importance of international graduate programme.
I would like to get networking opportunities and firsthand experience,
understanding of all major functions of business that I plan to take full advantage to extend
learning and improve my capabilities. I spent most of my professional life as a coordinator
for purchase and sales, KUMAR INDUSTRIES PVT LTD. I gained immense knowledge on how

3 P’s work (People, Process, and Performance). My education suits this field very well because I

have Bachelors in Business Management with a specialization in Finance. I believe that my

educational background and my work experience have instilled in me the qualities required
to meet the demands of an MBA. All this has given me valuable insights into the
environment in which companies operate – how they affect this environment and are affected
by it. The time limitation on each assignment has taught me to plan well, work systematically
and keep my reports up-to-date. At the same time, having to defend my conclusion and
recommendations, during both internal discussions and presentations to clients, has taught
me to think rigorously and creatively. Our extensive use of computers for analysis and
preparation of presentation and reports has made me familiar with spreadsheet, word
processing and presentation packages. Having witnessed the ability of finance to play such
an important role in the lives of so many people, I have decided to devote my career to the
application of finance in helping transform the world

Ambitions: 1.3

My immediate future goal is to obtain MBA degree and join a diploma in

London stock market which deals with the functioning and work s involved in capital and
money market. My life ambition is to launch an advanced technically sound manufacturing,
edible oil processing and purification plant in South India; and I believe the best way to
achieve this is to acquire additional business skills during my MBA course work. I hope to
nurture my ambition to evolve as successful entrepreneur by having an opportunity to
undertake education at UWIC. MBA degree would give me the necessary managerial skills to take
my business to new heights i.e. listing my company in global markets to compete in international
level and would foster achievement of my future ultimate goals. I feel privileged to have lived
through this decade and witnessed the changing dynamics of finance. Having spent most of
my time in India in the last decade, I have seen a third world country transform itself into the
centre of telecommunications and Information Technology. I have seen new jobs created, the
effects of financial empowerment and new financial models, which result in inhibition of
growth and entrepreneurship. I hope to play a key role in the swiftly changing and rapidly
evolving global finance industry.

Honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire: 2.1

Honey and Mumford learning styles is a management development tool. It was developed in
1992 and it is based on Kolbe’s 1974. This is used to know the learning style of individual,
their practices, and styles and help them ease their work and promote learning and causing
learning to happen.

The theory consists of ACTIVIST, REFLECTOR, THEORIST, AND PRAGMATIST.

As the questionnaire showed that I am a reflector. As per the score I stand second as a
theorist and pragmatist. The third score is Activist. This theory is easy to understand and
interpret. It will help to improve the ability to think strategically, viewing experiences, and
developmental learning.

“The learning cycle”:

Karthik anantha ST10000907
Plotted score of learning style questionnaire :

My score according to this as a activist is 12 (strong preference), reflector is 19 (very strong

preference), theorist 13 (moderate preference), pragmatist 13 (moderate preference).

Reflectors are most careful people who go through many methodical steps,
listening to varied kinds of thoughts and discussion, to end up in conclusions. They take
decisions for long term benefits and issues. These are the people who don’t take enough risks
but sit down and grab all the knowledge required and forecast it in practical world.
Reflectors think calmly and observe people in action and make their own points. They take up
jobs from scratch of low profile and take all, the past and present events to solve and
complete the job. One drawback as I found in my experience is they are ‘not assertive’, and
risk takers. These people are uncomfortable in unplanned situations, and need more
information to work on

I would definitely overcome all my weakness and try to adapt other learning styles.
Karthik anantha ST10000907
Strengths and weakness: 2.2

As per the theory of Honey and Mumford, reflectors will be having the following

Strengths: careful, thorough and methodical, thoughtful, good at listening, rarely jump to
conclusions, consider all the angles and implications.

Weakness: tendency to hold back from direct participation, slow, tendency to be too cautious and
not take enough risks, they aren’t particularly forthcoming and have no ‘small talk’.

Problems encountered: 2.3

Reflectors are the people who are not ready to expose them self for the new situations and
resist change.

They are not good at probing questions.

Reflectors take lot of time to end up at one conclusion; in this competitive world taking
spontaneous decision on right time in right way is very important. So the major problem will
be time constraint and not taking risk. Present business scenario states ‘higher the risk
higher the profits’.

They are not ready to involve or take up new tasks, new innovations.

Critique learning theory: 2.4

As per the crucial examination of the theory answering 80 questions, it seems to be too long and
time consuming, but provides with almost accurate answers.

I would like to specify that I agree with the most points in this theory but not
completely. After plotting myself on graph and cross check with my real life I can tell that I
am not only reflector but also activists and other also. I agree with this theory’s result which
is almost the same with character i have. Overall I can tell about this learning style
influences a lot on carrier of an individual and overcome his weakness and helps him to
understand his condition to seek from other learning styles which can enhance his potential.

Career and personal objective: 3.1

As a person from business family background my parents are nurturing me
with lot of current business affairs and states. I choose commerce in my Pre University, and
Karthik anantha ST10000907
bbm in my u g degree. I was working in my own company to seek more practical knowledge.
My parents use to help me know the value of money and people by giving examples of great

Entrepreneurs who are leading in international levels, their achievements and social status.
After listening to all those people stories that are playing a vital role in the economy of our
country, I would like to grow up and reach that position to build not only my reputation but
also my country’s ,family and my role models. So I have decided to learn as much as possible
which will enhance and help me throughout the life. Five years from now I would like to see
myself as a good capable entrepreneur of edible oil processing and purification plant in
south India.

“A man should have any number of little aims about which he should be conscious and for
which he should have names, but he should have neither name for, nor consciousness

concerning, the main aim of his life”- Samuel Butler.

I am looking into the greater details required for the betterment of my livelihood,
developing my terminology and my communication skills which are very important to put up
a good reputation in a work place. By structuring a strong fundamental base of the subject
and trying to get good results in the course through which i will be able to achieve my
potential goals.

Justification: 3.2

I forecast myself working as an entrepreneur in few years from now; basics of

subject have to be very strong. I need to work on practical as well as theory, which will help
me use them at necessary situations in my personal. Practical application of the theories will
be different from the reality sometimes, so it is necessary to work on both the sides. I think
the assignment has the amount of reading, helping me gain more knowledge, motivation,
performance evaluation and conflict resolution. I believe in one sentence what my chairman
of college use to tell us “performance is reality”.

Conclusion:
As a part of the curriculum, this report has been prepared with the objectives of

understanding different learning styles and procedures of Honey and Mumford continuously

striving to provide better ways to know their own weakness, and achieve things in easy way
Karthik anantha ST10000907
and methodically sound way. It helps the new learners and unsound learners to overcome the

difficulties.

This report writing has helped me understand my inner strengths and weakness better by
referencing to different styles of learning.
