Classroom Management

Portfolio

Cinthia Mendoza

CUIN 4375 Monday 9am-12pm

Introduction
This classroom management portfolio is intended to create a foundation for the

planning of my future teaching career. This is intended for the kindergarten and 1st grade levels

and isn’t specified to a specific content area as I would like to teach all subjects. I would like to

continue to come back to this and edit/ add more content, examples, learning styles, activities,

etc., as I learn throughout the next semesters. I would like to use this as a safety for my first

couple of years teaching and as I build and get the opportunity to learn from my colleagues as

well as myself, I could alter this plan as needed. I appreciate the opportunity to create

something so in depth apart from simply considering a first day of school outline. I believe this

project is something important to consider because as we learned in class, the more detailed

and planned for, the better. I understand that this is not a strict format that I must follow,

however, providing guidance into my first couple of years teaching.

Philosophical Statement
As a teacher, I would like to create a loving and fun environment for my students in

order to promote and motivate them to continue with their learning. I believe my learning style

would best compare to Skinner’s idea of positive reinforcement and Glasser’s idea of the

students taking ownership in the classroom. I feel that it is important to create such a great

foundation early on in a child’s education and allowing them to be responsible for their learning

in order for them to connect and value it. Also, by releasing that tight hold on the students, the

teacher is allowing much more room for a better and safer learning environment in which the

students are actively participating and engaging on a day to day basis. Teachers serve as a role

model for students and by promoting positive interactions and respect among child and adult,

you are teaching them a key competent that they can carry on with them.
First Day of School
First Day of School Script

On the first day school I plan on waiting at the door as my students

come in, in order to greet each other properly and get acquainted with
the students and the parents. Once class begins I would like to present
myself in order to make the students feel comfortable by bringing in
some pictures or artifacts so they can know a little about me.

Teacher: Good morning class! I am your kindergarten teacher and I am

very excited to start the school year with all of you! My name is Mrs.
Rodriguez and I am going to tell you a little bit about myself.

I will share some background information that I think is important and

show pictures/artifacts. After sharing, I will transition into the All About
Me activity.

Teacher: Now that I have told you some interesting things about me, I
would like you to also share some things about yourself so we could all
get to know you!

I will show my example of how I completed the wheel and begin the
activity.
All About Me Wheel

Students will complete their chart as a form of an icebreaker in order to

get comfortable with their classmates and introduce themselves to
each other. I hope this would help build connections among them.
First Day of Kindergarten Pictures

This is a fun little activity to be able to interact and enjoy time as a class
and maybe find similarities within classmates in ways that they can
bond. This can also be a great memento to share with the parents.
Letter Home to Parents

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the new school year! I could not be more excited to work
alongside you and your child. I would like to work together in order to
help your child succeed in their education and excel in their school.
Please feel free to contact me for any questions or concerns that you
may have over your child’s curriculum and also feel free to share with
me anything that could be beneficial for me to better assist your child. I
am looking forward to all the wonderful milestones your child will
overcome in this upcoming year!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Rodriguez

Classroom Environment
*Created with Classroom Architect
The classroom was arranged in this way to provide a comfortable
feel in the classroom with all the desks together in the class with 5
seats per table to encourage working together. There was also space in
the corner as a change of scenery from the desk setting to also work
together and teach a lesson from a different place.

I would like to include a reading

corner in my classroom as a fun and creative way to promote reading in
a different setting.

Discipline System
Behavioral Chart
Outstanding
Student is exceeding expectations

Great Job
Student is showing good discipline skills

Ready to Learn
Student comes prepared and is attentive

Think About It
Student should consider their actions/behavior

Teacher’s Choice
Student will receive negative reinforcement
based on behavior
Parent Contact
Student’s behavior has not improved therefore
parent/guardian will be contacted
Attention Getters
Whenever students are getting too
loud/ disruptive and begin to get off
task, I will use the following attention
getter to gather their attention and get
them back on task:
1. “One, two, three, all eyes on me…
one, two, eyes on you”
2. “If you hear my voice clap once…
clap twice… clap three times”
3. “Waterfall…shhhhhh”
Cool Down Corner
After the student misbehaves, I will pull them to the
side to discuss and ask them to take some time
away from the scene and sit in the cool down
corner. This is a way for them to assess the situation
and think about their actions before I play any role.
This way the students can truly reflect, understand,
and create problem solving skills with their
behaviors and hold themselves accountable.

prepared

Classroom Motivation
Treasure Box
Once students have been showing the
correct discipline, following all
procedures, showing positive citizenship
for two weeks, they can pick a treasure
out of the treasure box in order to serve
as motivation for their hard work being
recognized.
Read & Relax
At the end of the week, the students
who have shown positive behavior, work
ethic, and citizenship will have the chance
to spend some free time on the carpet
reading and kicking of their shoes.
Classroom Engagement
Pick Sticks
In order to keep the students on their
toes and always attentive during a lesson,
I would use these pick sticks that helps
randomly choose students to answer
questions. This can also help clarify there
isn’t favoritism since it is at random.
Friendly Competition
By promoting friendly competitions as
practice throughout the lessons, not only
are you ensuring the students are
comprehending the material but it is also
a form of fun. The students can work
together and help each other on areas
some may struggle. They will check their
own work and get quizzed on the material
they are learning.
