FLSMIDTH - Online based SIL Assessment session KEY LEARNINGS-

BACKGROUND TO DO THIS SESSION ONLINE:

FLSmidth’s (FLS) SIL assessment session was to be conducted in Chennai


on 9th and 10th March 2020. However FLS’s group advisory related to
COVID-19 issue (received 2 days ago before the session) forced us to
avoid physical travel and after discussion with the client and
considering client’s urgency to complete the project, it was agreed to
do a video call based SIL assessment session on the same 2 days.

Accordingly online session was successfully conducted using Webex on


9th March from office and on 10 th March 2020 it was done from my
Home (as it was a holiday in Mumbai). Client side personnel were from
multiple locations in Chennai and Germany.

MUST-TO-DO PREPARATIONS:

1- Ensure noise free (high tension area) high speed internet


connectivity and better to have a back-up internet connection
available (Mobile data doesn’t work for such cases).
2- Set the online session start, end, break, etc… timings beforehand
(especially when you have people from different geographies)
3- Your pre-session preparation shall be excellent and documents
should be arranged methodically in your drive/folders (you would
be sharing your screen with the client).
4- Practice voice modulation/ slow speaking as the people on the
other side are just hearing you/ staring at you.
5- If any doubts in client documentation, send the query list a day in
advance so that they can prepare with the answers.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE SESSIONS:

1- Site travel mandays from our costing sheet can be removed


completely/ some days can be waived off (adjusted) especially for
highly price-sensitive clients, hence extra hrs. for report
preparation.
2- Comfort of working from your location, so avoiding of outside
food, unnecessary travels especially late night/ early mornings.
3- Cost savings in terms of transportation, food, extra expenses,
etc...

DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE SESSIONS:

1- Internet speed issues pose a challenge, especially as now most


ISPs are overloaded with users. (Intermittently we had to turn-off
the video option as voice was not transmitted clearly)
2- Some concepts are difficult to explain (especially when client is
new to the subject) online especially like enabling conditions,
conditional modifiers. You cannot draw and explain on a
blackboard for them or park it for explanation during lunch time!!
3- Difficult to control multiple people speaking at the same time.
4- Understanding human behaviour is difficult as you are just
interacting via screen, so you don’t know how that person may
react at times.
5- Session may go very slow at times, especially if the team is stuck
in a particular query/ finding a tag, etc...(I experienced it)
6- Body and mind fatigue rate is fast as you are mostly seated and
staring at screen and communicating.
