Energyplus Course - Exercise 1: First Energyplus Simulation: November 2017

This document provides instructions for the first exercise using EnergyPlus for building performance simulation. The goals are to get started with the EnergyPlus user interface, conduct a simple simulation, define appropriate outputs, and do basic post-processing of results. The simulation question is whether insulating the walls from the inside or outside would better avoid summer overheating in the modeled house. The document outlines running the baseline model, making a copy with outside wall insulation, and comparing results to determine which approach reduces overheating risk more. It also asks what important parameters may be missing from the model.

Exercise goals
Getting started with EP-Launch and IDF Editor,
conducting a simple building performance
simulation study, defining appropriate outputs,
basic post-processing of the outputs

Simulation question
To avoid summer overheating in the modelled
house, is it a better strategy to insulate the walls
from the inside or from the outside?

A) Model verification
1. Before running the model, examine the model to fill the table below:

Number of thermal zones [-]

Number of roof surfaces [-]
Number of layers in the building window construction [-]
Thickness of thermal insulation applied to the walls [cm]

2. Run the model with appropriate Output:Table:SummaryReports to fill the table below:

Building total floor area [m2]

South façade window-wall ratio [%]
External walls U-Value with film [W/m2K]
Window glass U-Value [W/m2K]

B) Baseline performance
3. Run the model with appropriate Output:Variable objects and process the output data in a spreadsheet
to obtain the following indicators:

Maximum hourly outdoor temperature [°C]

Maximum hourly indoor temperature [°C]
Number of hours with indoor temperature higher than 28°C [-]

C) Design alternative: Wall insulation from the outside

4. Make a new copy of the model, in which the thermal insulation is the outside layer of the walls.
5. Fill the table below:

External walls U-Value with film [W/m2K]

6. Process the output variables in a spreadsheet to obtain the following indicators:

Maximum hourly indoor temperature [°C]

Number of hours with indoor temperature higher than 28°C [-]

7. Based on the conducted simulation study, which design alternatives do you recommend to reduce
overheating risk in the modelled building?

Wall insulation position: Inside Outside

8. From your perspective, what important parameters are missing in the model, which may undermine
the credibility of the results and the conclusion?
