Week 1 Blog

The student found developing multiple ideas for their final major project (FMP) helped them identify their most unique and creative concept - a story about a teenager who wakes up as someone else and must figure out how to switch back. Writing their proposal helped them further develop the plot, characters, and locations they plan to film at. Feedback from a survey of their target audience showed interest in their main idea, which allowed them to add more plot twists and character development. They are on track so far having submitted their initial context work and are awaiting feedback to improve it, but will need to complete work outside of lessons to stay on schedule due to college closures from Covid-19 this week.

Week One - Context

CONTEXT

How did you find coming up At first I struggled as I wanted to do a project that would challenge
with an idea that challenged my ability and let me have full creative control- so I can show my
you enough for your FMP? capabilities and get my highest grade possible. From previous units I
had always gotten a good grade on my short film units, so I was
certain that this was the production I wanted to make because past
units show I can get good grades on them. I had written out 3 ideas
that I was developing from the start, as I believe developing the
stories from the start will lead to better productions, and after
developing each for the same amount of time it was clear to me that
my most unique and creative Idea was about a teenager who wakes
up as someone else, and has to find out how and if it is possible he
can get back. I asked the teachers what they thought of the idea and
they agreed It was unique enough as a production I could possibly
do. To see if my target audience I made a survey with some basic
questions for the survey participants to rank each production, so I
can get an idea if they were on the same page as me. Overall, The
sleep and switch idea was very popular among my target audience,
getting the most votes and highest rank in the survey, this gives me
confidence in making the production because I know that I am basing
it off of something that I, my teachers and target audience think it
has serious potential, in conclusion it was easy for me to come up
with my idea after I had developed them, as it was the most creative
and unique.

How has writing a proposal When writing my proposal it helped me cement the ideas I had for
helped you with finalising my short films, things like having specific plot points and certain
your idea? times, like injury at the beginning and the attempt for him to return
closer to the end. Writing my proposal also helped me start getting
an idea of what character development, something I want to have a
clear idea about as I believe this is crucial to an engaging production,
some of the things I decided was for my protagonist to change his
mindset a few times when he’s in his switched form, as he has a
tough decision to make on what he wants to prioritise, his friends
and family, or his developed, very lavish and rich new life that he’s
seemingly walked into. Having the protagonist change his mind will
create plot twists, a key convention of short films that are crucial to
engaging the audience. Writing the proposal has also helped me
time manage my locations where I’m going to be filming, as it would
be harder to get into many places because of the new covid-19
restrictions, with a possible lockdown still upcoming. For this I have
decided I will mainly be filming on my own properties and a park,
which is open and therefore keeping with current government
guidelines. These locations are realistic in the current situation,
rather than renting a nicer room or apartment to make the setting
look more lavish, I will just use my shots to make the specific
locations to look more upper class when he switches bodies.

How did the feedback help The feedback from my survey helped a lot because it let me know
you adapt your idea – what my target audience was interested in my main idea, meaning I can
did you change after have freedom to make the production knowing they’re interested in
feedback? the concept. I found out from my feedback that people that took the
survey are all 16+. Which is good for me as this is my target
audience so all of this research is authentic in what my target
audience want. One way I changed my idea is that I continued to
develop my main idea when I saw how well it was doing in the
survey, adding some plot twists in and starting to develop
characters. These are two key elements of a short film and as the
feedback was so positive I was able to improve my production, like
adding a serious mental health element to it, and deciding the
production to be a genre hybrid of drama and mystery. These
decisions helped my production become more developed and it was
thanks to the feedback I had received from teacher and target
audience.

Are you on track for the I’m on track for this week as I have sent in my context work before
week? If not, how far behind the deadline and now awaiting on some feedback to improve it.
are you?

What work do you need to Due to Covid-19 for 3 days this week the college closed meaning
complete outside of lessons most of the work was done from home- and only the start of my
to stay on track? proposal at college.
