Interview Process and Application Critical Reflection Sample Questions To Ask Myself Part 3 Step 3

This document provides guidance for completing a critical reflective report on an application process and interview. It outlines three key areas for reflection: 1) The approach taken to prepare the application, 2) Preparation for the interview, and 3) An assessment of how the interview went and how future interviews could be improved. For each area, it provides questions to guide self-reflection, such as considering research conducted, linking skills to the role, and evaluating responses to interview questions. The summary should be structured using the three outlined sections and include examples to support an assessment of strengths and weaknesses from the experience. Higher grades would apply a reflective model and research on standards to the critical analysis.

Professional Identity and Practice Assignment

Tips for Completion of Part 3, Step 3

Upon completion of the application process and interview, you have decided to carry out a
detailed and coherent critical review of key strengths and weaknesses of the experience, as a
whole. This critical review should take the form of a reflective report and should include:

 The approach you undertook in preparing your application

 Your preparation for the interview
 How you feel the interview went, including identifying how you could improve upon this for
future job interviews.

Below are some questions which you might ask yourself when completing your
critical reflection

Most of these would start with … To What Extent did I…

The approach you undertook in preparing your application

 Undertake research into CV writing best practice in style, content and layout?

 Use the job description and person specification when compiling my CV?

 Conduct research into the organisation, when drafting my cover letter, to link my skills and
qualities to those required and also help to ‘sell myself’ to the organisation? Did I
demonstrate my knowledge of what is currently going on in the organisation?

 Proof read my work? (Ensuring that I didn’t contradict myself by saying I had good
communication skills whilst submitting a CV and cover letter with multiple mistakes within it)

 Plan this part well? Allowing sufficient time to conduct research, drafting of the documents
and reviewing them? Or was this rather rushed – if so how did this affect the overall quality
of your preparation

Your preparation for the interview

 Spend sufficient time researching the organisation (how successful is at present, are there
any changes that are being made – structure, product range, etc) and reflecting on what the
job involved?

 Consider how my skills, experience and qualities related to the job?

 Carry out research on the types of questions which may be asked, given the nature of the
job role and the person specification?

 Consider the answers I would give to these questions and what examples I could provide?
 Research and create an appropriate range of questions to ask the interviewer?

 Consider what appropriate body language I should use (to create the right impression)?

 Consider what appropriate clothing to wear (given the nature of the role) and what to bring
along to the interview. Did I look professional?

 Plan my journey, so that I arrived on time?

How you feel the interview went, including identifying how you could improve
upon this for future job interviews.

 Create a positive first impression?

 Maintain eye contact (without staring!)?

 Maintain positive body language (or did I wave my hands around, or slouch in my seat)?

 Predict the questions that were going to be asked?

 How well did I respond to the questions? Did I provide a clear, structured answer or were
some of my answers too long or too short?

 Did I provide appropriate examples?

 Overall how did I feel the interview went? Why?

When you have considered the answers to the above questions, and any others you
could think of, you have the basis of your critical reflection.

Provide sufficient detail using examples, where appropriate, to support your

assessment of your strengths and weaknesses.

Structure your answer into a reflective report. You may use the three sections in bold
above, to provide this structure (see class slides for week 6 for the overall structure of
the reflective report).

Those aiming for higher grades would have started this section by applying their
reflection to an appropriate model, such as Gibbs reflective cycle (1988) and then
developed greater depth to their answer, using research on professional standards as a
benchmark to gauge their own level of performance throughout the reflective report
