Contractions

So, what do you know about

contractions? Well, they are a simplified
way to say two words with the sound of
one. Most commonly used in the
speaking, but also accepted in writing.
Let’s see how it works:
 If we take as an example the words
“Let us”, we would contract them as
“Let’s”. There, we took the last letter
from the word “us”, which is “s”, and
added an ‘ (apostrophe).
 Examples in context:
- Let’s take a break from working. (Vamos tirar
uma pausa do trabalho)
- Let’s have dinner. (Vamos jantar)
- Let’s play some games. (Vamos jogar alguns
jogos)
- Let’s go eat something. (Vamos comer alguma
coisa)
 Another common example is “I
have”. We would contract it as
“I’ve”. Here, we have the last two
letters from the word “have” and
added that same apostrophe.
 Examples in context:
- I’ve passed the test. (Eu passei no
teste)
- I’ve got two cats. (Eu tenho dois
gatos)
- I’ve been talking to Ryan. (Eu estive
falando com o Ryan)
- I’ve stopped (or quit) smoking. (Eu
parei de fumar)
- We can also contract words in the
negative form. That means “do not”,
“will not” , “does not”, “is not” , “are
not” and so on…
- Do (fazer/farei) not becomes “don’t”
- Will (Ir/Irei) not become “won’t”
- Does (fazer em he,she,it) not
becomes “doesn’t”
- Is (É em He,She,It) not becomes
“isn’t”
- Are (É/São) not becomes “aren’t”
*He/She/It = HSI - Ele/Ela/Isso

 There are many words in the English

language that can be contracted
together. Here’s a small list of the
meaning of each contraction:
- n’t Not (negativa)
- ‘re Are (Ser/É)
- ‘d Had or Would (Tinha
ou Gostaria)
- ‘ll Will or Shall (Irá/Irei ou
Deve)
- ‘s Is or Has (É ou Tem
em HSI)
- I‘m I am (Eu
sou/estou)
- ‘ve Have (Tenho ou
Tem)
 Lastly, here are the most common
words used in contraction:
Are (É) Ex: Aren’t
Can (Pode) Ex: Can’t
Could (Poderia) Ex: Couldn’t
Would (-ia) Ex: Wouldn’t, Woul’ve
Will (Irá/Irei) Ex: Won’t
I (Eu) Ex: I’ll, I’m
You (Você) Ex: You’ll, You’d,
You’re
