Socorro "Coring" Ramos was one of the most successful entrepreneur in the Philippines.

She was behind

the largest book store chain in the country-- National Book Store. National Book Store has 160 branches
throughout the Philippines with some mini outlets like National Book Store- Book Express and specialty
book stores like Powerbooks. Looking outside without digging the hidden facts it was indeed a succesful
business in the Philippines. However, behind this succesful business lies a roller coaster ride which was
faced and supassed by Socorro "Coring" Ramos.

Back when Nanay Coring was a young girl she was selling fruits at a local market to help his grandmother.
Due to tight situation her mother decided to move to Manila seeking for better opportunities. While
Nanay Coring was in high school she worked many part-time jobs during her summer vacation. At a
young age she experienced wrapping bubblegum and sewing buttons on shirt.

Life after high school for Nanay Coring was even harder. Her familiy cannot afford to send her to college
and that forced her to work as a sales lady at a bookstore. Not be able to enter college and working as a
sales lady in a bookstore is not a very bad situation at all for her because it is when he met her husband
Jose Ramos.

During the 1940's they decided to establish a small stall in Escolta and named it National Bookstore.
Success for her and his husband did not go under their way. During the Japanese Occupation, strict
censorship on books was implemented where the books sold at thier store was seen by Japanese
soldiers to be objectionable. She does not have a choice but to put it away and hide it. Instead of giving
up Nanay Coring did not stop. She thinks of another products that she can sell to subsitute the books.
She resorted in selling soaps, candies and slippers.

After the war, another challenge was given to them again because the whole of Escolta was burned
down and their stall was ruined. They had to Relocate in Avenida and this time, they sold the books they
had previously put away. The resilience of Nanay Coring was tested again when after three years their
store was struck by a typhoon, blowing the roof and damaging many of their merchandise. This however,
does not stop Nanay Coring and he rose the business back up once more.

In 1970s, the National Bookstore bacame popular because they are selling reprinted versions of foreign
textbooks for 75% lesser than the actual price. After earning profit they invested in buying more school
suplies and books. They ventured on postcards and greeting cards. They also created partnerships with
international publishing houses and reprinted books at lower prices.

The business skyrocketed. They sell products of well-known brands and aside from that they also
manufactures their own school suplies-- Best Buy. They also teamed up with a Canadian based e-book
seller named Kobo.

As time passess by and technology is rapidly innovating they also maximize the opportunities of selling
their products by being actively visible to social media platforms. They created a website wherein
customers can shop via this website. National Bookstore build a mindset that students, office workers,
and everyone else will find what they are looking for in the National Bookstore.
Indeed that there is no shortcuts to sucess. Nothing can be easily achieve without hardwork, patience,
perseverance and commitment to what you are doing. Socorro "Coring" Ramos once said " work hard,
very hard. There is no express elevator to sucess. You have to climb the stairs".

1. The strategy that I would like to adapt from the entrepreneur is building a partnership with a business
that will help my business in many ways such as providing raw materials with a lower cost and reducing
the cost of production of my products.

2. I think the possible problems that my business might encounter with such strategy is that building
trust with the business that I wanted to partner with especially when it comes to the raw materials that
is very essential in producing the product of my business.

3. The situation that inspires me the most is when they build a small stall and sell books but restrictions
to sell the books occured and they had to switch into selling soaps candies and slippers. This happening
in her life inspires me the most because if I was in her situation and this kind of challenges occured
immediately after putting up my business I might be discourage and will not think of any remedies. It
teaches me to be patient, positive and resilient to problems that might occur in putting up and managing
a business. It also teaches me that taking risk is part of managing a business and that every risk lies an
opportunity.

4. I won't alter any of their products instead I would like to innovate some of their products. The demand
on the Best Buy products that they were manufacturing will increase if they will improve its quality while
maintaining its affordable price. For example their paper products, they should improve its quality
because there are a lot of papers out there which has a good quality and affordable price.

5. Success was attained by Nanay Coring but she did forget to look back and help others. With the scale
of the National Book Store they have been a great help to the people in the society. These are the 5
contributions of the National Book Store to the society:s

1. Helping people to have good quality books and supplies at a reasonable prices.

2. Providing employment that will uplift the life of people in the society.

3. Helping public school children by giving them a free shool supplies through the "Project Aral 2019".

4. Providing funds to the government that will be use to public procurement projects by paying the
levied taxes to the business.

5. Partnering with different foundations and charities to improve the accessibility and provide books to
people specially the children who has no capability of buying one.
