The document discusses research on the effects of video games on students' school performance. It reviews literature showing that while some parents think video games negatively impact grades, studies found benefits like improved cognitive skills from non-violent games. all day. It is one of the reasons why the parents are somewhat against video games.

in a way that they forgot or ignore doing requirements because they’re playing video

games. But not every students lack discipline. Some have discipline because they don’t

want to have a low grades. Playing video games is part of children’s childhood

According to Owen (2016) A video game is interactive digital entertainment that you

“play” via a computer, a game console (like the Xbox or PlayStation) or a phone or

tablet. Video games requires platform to run. Only the handheld devices are portable,

unlike computers or consoles, handheld devices often fit in the pocket. There are varieties

of genre for gamers to choose. According to Stahl (2005) Most games fall within a

particular category. Some bridge different gaming styles and, thus, could appear under

more than one category simultaneously. Genre is important in video game; it is one of the

reasons why video games are very popular. If a video games’ genre fits the taste of the

gamers, for sure many will play it.

Since its commercial birth in the 1950s as a technological oddity at a science fair,

gaming has blossomed into one of the most profitable entertainment industries in the

world. (Chikhani, 2015) Since then the video games industry grows bigger and bigger.

Video games are such a hit during the 1970’s to 1980’s; the golden age of video games.

Back in the days, the kids falls in line and wait for their turn just to play their favorite

game in the arcade. Because back then, video games can only be played in arcade centers.

Now, arcade is not as popular back in the days because gamers can now play their

favorite games inside their home. Video games now are more convenient because it is

more available now.

Some parents discourage their kids to play video games because for them video

games don’t have any benefits at all. According to Becker(2016), video games boost your

memory, increases your coordination, good for cognitive health, reduces stress and

depression, and they sharpen your decision making. Becker’s article provides some

health benefits of video games. Video games are not that bad for the health as what

Becker stated in his article.

an interesting subject but most of their parents think that playing them could be bad for the

academic competence of their child. Bear in mind that some of these computer games can be both

educational as well as enjoyable (Estrada, et. al., 2006)

The statement stated the though of the students and parents regarding video games. Some video

According to Bond (2011), Video games occupied a large amount of my time as a

child, and I found that the experience of playing largely nonviolent games was a

cognitively stimulating exercise that increased my perceptual-motor, learning, memory,

problem-solving, and executive functioning abilities and skills. Video games do really

have effect based on the experience of bond. The effects may vary depending of what

genre of game you play. Playing nonviolent games can help students perform better based

on what Bond experience.

Many teachers, parents and other concerned organizations and people continuously

clamor for a tighter clamp over computer gaming. Protest mainly focused on how the

trend is becoming a cause of distraction among students in their studies. Many

entrepreneurs set up cafés near schools to cater the youngsters, the market by the industry

is seemingly tailored for. Many students are designating cafés as hangout places where

hours are spent playing – be it until late at night, or worse, during school hours which

makes students skip classes. In 2007, complaints have been received from schools all

over Manila, Philippines’ capital city regarding students getting more and more addicted

to online computer gaming. This is in spite of the fact that the government’s Department

of Education (DepEd) values how online computer gaming also helps sharpen the young

generation into highly proficient individuals in new technologies and digital trends.

DepEd also recognizes that internet and computer shops cater to the research needs of

students, especially those without internet access at home. In addition, it is viewed that

computer gaming is a shift from the usual vices of young students today, such as drinking

and smoking (Cortes, et, al., 2012).

The problem may be within the students itself. If students don’t have self – discipline

concerning to playing video games their school performance will falter. Video games

should not be blamed for the poor school performance because some students have better

grades because of video games. It is up to the students how they will properly play video

games so their school performance will not suffer.

Video games seem to affect students in different ways. The effect may be positive or

negative depending on the attitude and mindset of the child. Video games may be a big

factor or not to poor school performance like what parents is thinking. But video games is

not the only reason for a student’s poor school performance maybe there are other things

that bothers a student that can lead to lower grades.
