Science (Grade 2&3)

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
1. Identify the parts of the plants
2. Compare the different functions of the parts of the plants
3. Show appreciation to the parts of the plants by telling it’s importance.

II. Subject Matter:


Topic: Parts of the plants
References: 1. Science Connection 2
2. Science for Young Minds 3
Materials: Card Board, Cartolina, Manila Paper
Values: Teamwork

III. Procedures:
A. Preliminary Activity

B. Motivation
Who is familiar with the nursery rhymes entitled “The Green Grass Grows
all around”?
The teacher will provide a lyrics of the said songs with the underlined
parts of the plants and the teacher will lead the singing followed by the pupils.

After the singing, the teacher will ask the pupil what are the underlined
words and let all of them read all the parts of the plants in chorus.

After which, the teacher will ask the pupil where can they find the
underlined words.
C. Presentation
Presenting the visual aid on the board. This is the example of a plant.
Do you know that each part of plants has its own function?
D. Discussion
“The roots hold the plants. They get water and nutrients from the soil
that serve as the fuel and help the plant grow.”
“The stem holds the leaves, flower and fruits. It carries water and
nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant.”
“The leaves make the food for the plants. It captures the sunlight and
absorb carbon dioxide that is needed to make food.”
“The flower creates seeds and serve as the reproductive unit of the plant.
It makes the place colorful and beautiful.”
“The fruits hold the seeds. The seeds protect the baby plants.”

E. Generalization
Raise five questions
1. Based on our activity and discussion, what have you learned today?
2. What is the function of the roots?
3. What is the function of the stem?
4. What is the function of the flower?
5. What will happen to us if there is no plant on earth?
F. Application
Picture Puzzle
1. Divide the class into five groups and let them stay in the respective groups.
2. Distribute the puzzle in each group.
3. Let them finish the task within 5 min.
4. The first group who finished the task will post the pictures in the board.
5. Each group will explain the function of the part of the plant in the picture
they have formed. They group may choose one person to explain.
