THE HONEST WOOD CUTTER

A very good morning to the honourable judges, loyal time keeper,

teachers and my dear friends. Today I am standing here to tell you all a
beautiful story entitled ‘ The honest wood cutter’.

So sit back, relax and enjoy my story...

Once upon a time, two woodcutters named Jack and David lived in a
village near a forest. Jack was a hardworking and honest man. On the
other hand, David was a lazy man.

One day, while Jack was cutting a tree on the bank of a river, the axe
slipped out of his hand and fell into the river.

“Oh no! How will I work without an axe? That was the only axe I had”
cried Jack and sat depressed on the bank of the river and started
praying to the God. “ Oh god please help me” said Jack.

Suddenly a goddess appeared from the river and asked him " Jack, why
are you so sad?"

“My axe fell into the river" replied Jack.

“Don't worry, I can help you. ” said the Goddess and disappeared deep
into the river and appeared with a golden axe in her hand.

“Is this your axe? “asked the Goddess.

“No, this is not my axe” replied Jack.

Goddess again went into the water and appeared with a silver axe in her
hand.

“Is this your axe?” asked the Goddess.

“No, this is not my axe,” said Jack again.

The Goddess disappeared into the river again and appeared with an axe
made of iron. “Is this your axe?” asked the Goddess again.

“Yes, this is my axe” replied Jack happily and thanked the Goddess.

Goddess said “ Jack , I am pleased with your honesty. Keep all the three
axes as a reward for your honesty”. Jack returned home happy with all
the three axes. Next day, Jack went and sold the golden axe in the
market and got a lot of money.

Meanwhile, David , his neighbour became curious to know how did Jack
become rich overnight. One day, David overheard Jack narrating the
story to his children.

Next day, David went to the same river bank, deliberately dropped his
axe into the river and started praying. Goddess appeared to David also.

“Why are you crying David?“ asked the Goddess.

He replied, “I lost my axe in the river”. The Goddess understood that he

is trying to play with her.

Goddess went into the river and came back holding a golden axe and
asked: “ Is this your axe?”. David replied, “ Yes, this is my axe”. The
Goddess became furious. She said “ I know this is not your axe. You
know it too. Now you will not get even your own axe because of your
dishonesty” and the Goddess disappeared.

Thus David had to return home empty-handed.

So, my dear friends, from this story we can learn that honesty is the best
policy. We should honest in every time and anywhere. with that, I thank
you.
