Installation

Insert FD1431R04 Disk 1/3.

In Windows Program Manager, select ‘File’, ‘Run’
In the Command Line box, enter ‘A:\INSTALL’ and press ‘Return’
or click ‘OK’.

Follow screen prompts through all three disks and the automatic
restarting of Widows.

Verify that the ‘Camco Drilling Group (15 Dec 97)’ contains icons
representing the SU Executables and spreadsheets shown above as
well as File Manager, Backup, CompuServe and Word.

Double-click each icon to invoke its program and check that the
screen caption (Scope and Meter) or ‘Help’, ‘About’ (SCB Editor,
Downlink, Surface Link and Process) shows the expected version
number.

To test the integrity of installation, click the right mouse button

within the Run Manager window and select ‘New Job’. Type test
<C/R>. The icons will be configured to use c:\user\system\test.
Spreadsheet files are also copied to this path. When icons are
activated, their programs should work in the correct way.

In each of the programs, SCB Editor, Navigation / Downlink,

Surface Link and Process, under ‘Help’, ‘This Version’ may be seen
brief details of the differences between this release and the previous
release.

On completion, store the disks in a safe place.

Compatibility

This software release is a complete and self-compatible suite of

programs. All of these programs are intended to be functionally
compatible with those of the previous release. However, it is

Revised By: Approved By: Revision No.: Revised: Page: Section:

G. Thomson S. Peach 1 21/09/00 B-4 Appendix B
Appendix B – Software Release Note
(SR1431R04)

strongly recommended that this release be used in its entirety.

Disregarding this may have unpredictable and unforeseen
consequences.
New Programs

UnInstall V1.01

An UnInstall program has been added to the release (disk 1/3)

When the Surface Unit is returned to base after a job, UnInstall is

run from the release disk using File Manager.

UnInstall removes the Camco Drilling Group window and restores

program manager o its normal state.

By default, all files under c:\user are deleted. A check box provides
the option to not delete c:\user.

It is important that the Run Manager be terminated before running

UnInstall

Otherwise, the c:\user tree will not be completely removed.

Program Changes

Run Manager V1.03

The Run Manager has been changed to allow easier verification of

software installation before a Surface Unit leaves Base.

To check the integrity of the installation, click the right mouse

button within the Run Manager and select ‘New Job’. Instead of a
job number, type test and verify that the icons pick up data files in
the c:\user\system\test directory. This verifies that the Run Manager
manipulates the icons correctly.

About Short description of Surface Link

Scope

Scope displays pressure data in a horizontally scrolling window that

emulates an oscilloscope, A subsidiary window shows the real-time
spectrum of the pressure waveform.

Various smaller windows show Scope’s current configuration.

Buttons allow the user to customise Scope to immediate
requirements. Buttons respond to the mouse / trackball as well as the
keys identified by their highlighted characters.

To the right of the Waveform window are the primary control

buttons and information displays. Under ‘Sensitivity are shown the
vertical (PSI / division) and horizontal (seconds / division) resolution
of the Waveform display. Below there is a numeric display of
current pressure. A dual radio-style button toggles this between PSI
and mulltivolts as digitised. Displaying mV is a useful diagnostic in
conjunction with a DVM on the rear panel test points.

A block of six numeric displays, bounded by a long vertical ‘L’ and

‘R’ buttons, control the Waveform window.

§ ‘Y’ (Ymax) represents the top of the Waveform window in PSI

or mV as selected.
§ ‘y’ (Ymin) represents the bottom of the Waveform window in
PSI or mV as selected.
§ ‘Hz’ represents the display frequency.
§ ‘ZO’ is Zero Offset to cater for differences between transducers.

Appendix B – Software Release Note
(SR1431R04)

§ ‘S’ is the number of samples shown in the Waveform window,

(32, 64, 128, 256, 512).
§ ‘P’ is a standpipe pressure level, shown as a blue line in the
Waveform window, at which the flow rate is sufficient to run
the Control Unit. ‘P’ is independent of ‘Y’ and ‘y’.

Cursor-left and cursor-right keys also operate the ‘L’ and ‘R’ buttons
respectively.

Cursor-up and cursor-down keys move the selected display up and

down.

Display Left Right Shift + Shift +

Left Right

Y -5 psi +5 psi -100 psi +100psi

Hz -1 Hz +1 Hz
ZO -1 psi +1 psi -10 psi +10 psi
S /2 *2
P -5 psi +5 psi -100 psi +100 psi

On quitting Scope, the values of these six parameters are saved for
the next time it is run.

To the bottom right corner:

§ Filter On / Off Applies a 2 Hz lowpass

filter to incoming data
§ Autorange Automatically sets ‘Y’
and ‘y’ to accommodate
displayed Waveform.

§ DC / AC Coupling DC forces ‘y’ to zero

§ Quit Close the Scope

program

On quitting Scope, additionally, the time of last Telemetry and its

Build, Turn and Mode indices are saved.

The Spectrum widow and its controls are located below the
Waveform window. Its blue trace is a real-time Fast Fourier
Transform of the time-domain Waveform. A vertical red line may be
selected to automatically track the highest displayed spectral peak or
may be manually located using the ‘<’ and the ‘>’ keys or buttons.
Makers under the Spectrum window represent various SCB rotation
rate parameters:

§ Yellow Diagnostic Period / Telemetry Window

rotation rate
§ Red Bit fail rotation rate (No telemetry or
failed telemetry)
§ Green Bit OK rotation rate (Successful telemetry
AS SEEN ON SURFACE)
§ Blue Drilling cycle neutral mode rotation rate
(beware Collar or Roll mode).

The ‘red-line’ frequency may be shown as Hertz, events per minute

or equivalent Bias Unit RPM.

The display units cycle on the full-stop (‘.’) key.

The eys ‘s’ and ‘S’ expand and contract the frequency scale of the
Spectrum window.

The Downlink window, at bottom left, shows the inferred current

operational state of the Control Unit and details of the last telemetry
sequence as interpreted by the Scope program. It is important to be
aware that this is a surface observation based on pressure readings.
The Control Unit responds to flow-rate changes.

The displays and buttons to the right of the Downlink window:

§ Current SCB name (required for timings, Spectrum markers,

telemetry interpretation)

§ Freeze button freezes the Waveform display.

§ The Record button saves Waveform data (post-Filter) to the

file whose name is shown alongside (Txxx.TF) The number xxx
automatically increments each time a file is saved. If the
display is frozen, the current Waveform window is saved and
the button self-releases. If the display is not frozen, data is
continuously saved until the Record button is released by
clicking it again or pressing ‘E’. Files are saved to the Scope’s
current working directory as shown in its Icon’s properties.

§ Clicking the playback button brings up a temporary window in

which a filename is entered. The file is replayed into the
Waveform window and the Freeze button latched on. When the
user releases the Freeze button, Scope reverts to normal
operation.

NOTE:
When no transducer is connected, Scope should register
approximately –1486 PSI (0mV). When connection is made

to a transducer observing ambient conditions, Scope should register

within 50 PSI of zero. The Zero Offset facility may be used to adjust
the display.

SPD (Surface Pressure Diagnostic)

With SPD, the user can manipulate a Waveform recorded by Scope.

In a similar way to Scope, SPD shows both time and frequency
domains but SPD further allows the user to modify the spectrum
from which a revised Waveform is displayed.

With the cursor in the Spectrum window, it changes to a vertical

double-arrow. On pressing the left mouse button, the cursor changes
to a cross-hair. Keeping the left button pressed, and dragging the
mouse sideways, the wiped portion of the spectrum changes from
red to black. On releasing the mouse button and clicking ‘Remove’,
the highlighted portion is deleted and the revised Spectrum and
Waveform are redisplayed.

Similarly, a portion may be kept, the unwiped portion being deleted,

or a portion may be halved or doubled.

The ‘DC->0’ button removes the DC component of a waveform.

Zoom and pan buttons enable closer inspection of the waveform.

The resultant Waveform may be saved to file for replay into the
Scope program.

When the cursor is in the Spectrum window, clicking the right

mouse button creates
