Basic Productivity Tools (BPT) : Grade-2 PDF

This document describes a 2nd grade math lesson that uses the Graph Club technology tool. The lesson introduces students to bar graphs and pie charts through a class discussion and demonstration of Graph Club. Students then collect their own data by polling others on a topic of their choice over the weekend. On Monday, students input their data into Graph Club to create graphs and write sentences comparing data using less than, more than, and equal to terms. The teacher reflects that having students poll a larger number of people and make a pie chart would further math skills in percentages.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Graph Club

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: MCC2.MD.10: Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to
represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple, put-together, take-apart, and compare
problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The teacher will begin by leading the students in a class discussion on
bar graphs, pie graphs, and data tables and charts. The teacher will walk the students through Graph Club and
show them how to input data and create a chart, based off their data. The teacher will then take a poll on
everyone’s favorite ice cream, input the data into Graph Club, and show the students a sample data chart and
bar graphed based on the classes ice cream data. The teacher will discuss the concept of more than, less than,
and equal to. The students will then choose their own question to ask and answer the categories and poll 20
people over the weekend to collect the data for the charts and graphs. On Monday, the students will input
and graph their data they collected over the weekend and write three sentences about graphs using less than,
more than, and equal to.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will begin by leading the students in a class discussion on bar graphs, pie graphs, and data tables
and charts. The teacher will walk the students through Graph Club and show them how to input data and
create a chart, based off their data. The teacher will then take a poll on everyone’s favorite ice cream, input

ice cream data. The teacher will discuss the concept of more-than, less-than, and equal-to. The students will
then choose their own question to ask and answer the categories and poll 20 people over the weekend to
collect the data for the charts and graphs.

On Monday, the students will input and graph their data they collected over the weekend and write three
sentences about graphs using less than, more than, and equal to.
Students will then submit their completed graphs and paragraph of their understanding of graphs, less-than,
greater-than, and equal-to to their class dropbox for the assignment.

Reflective Practice: I think the Graph Club activity is a great one to get students learning more about graphs

and how to create different ones on their own. This activity shows that there are a multitude of things that
can be graphed and charted in various ways. To further extend the lesson, I would have my students come up
with a poll question that they can ask a larger number of people. This makes the lesson a little bit tougher and
can add more categories for the student to break their graph up into. I would then have my students create a
pie chart to show the different percentages each category got. This would allow the teacher to move further
into percentages and math lessons.
