Class and Grade Level: First Grade – Math

Daily Lesson Topic: Solve addition problems using single digit numbers

Unit: Solve Addition and Subtraction Problems

Standards: 1.0A Students can represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction (Application)

1.0 A Students can add and subtract within 20 (Understanding)

1.0A Students can work with addition and subtraction equations (Analysis)

Goals: SWBAT recognize addition, subtraction, and equal signs in an equation

SWBAT add and subtract single digit numbers

SWBAT quickly and accurately solve single digit addition and subtraction equations
SWBAT understand adding and subtracting double digit numbers

Daily Objectives: SWBAT solve problems by adding single digit numbers using objects
SWBAT solve equations using single digit numbers

SWBAT set up equations using single digit numbers

Instructional strategy: Guided Discovery – work with M&M’s

Lecture-discussion – while teaching the lesson, we will involve the students in our lecture
Modification/accommodation: Visual/Spatial – correctly place M&M’s in groups to solve equations

Logical/Mathematical – add and subtract numbers

Interpersonal – students will work with a partner to complete activities

Students will work in pairs to complete a worksheet which will accommodate for Julie who broke the hand
she uses to write with. One teacher will be with Julie for the bell work and exit ticket to assist with her
writing when she doesn’t have a partner.
Materials: Note cards, M&M’s, Power Point, Projector, Worksheet, Equation Paper, Dry Erase
Markers/Eraser, White Board

Description of Each Phase of the Lesson Plan Brief Reflection/Explanation

Time: Introduction: Bell work: have students answer the question on the Students are reviewing what

by 5’s from 0-20?”; Go over objectives on PPT; Intro to lesson: Call
two students to the board to write a single digit number (1-9).
Time: Instruction: Use PPT to: introduce terms (addition sign, equal Teaching students basic terms
sign), go over example adding object problems using lecture and methods of addition
discussion, have a few students come to the board and work equations.
through sample addition problems with guidance from teacher and
classmates
Time: Practice: Hand out M&M bags; have students work in groups of two Hands on activity to help
to solve addition problems using M&M’s as visuals; one teacher will students better understand
lead the activity while the other three are assisting the students and practice addition.
Time: Assessment: Teachers will hand out worksheets and observe Formative assessments show
students; Students work on worksheet with partner and complete that students are prepared to
as much as they can complete the summative
worksheet at the end of the
lesson.
Time: Closure/Wrap Up: Teachers will ask if students have questions Sums up the lesson of addition
about the daily lesson; have students get out notecard to discuss and explains to students why it
bell work question; Have students answer one addition equation on is important. Exit ticket will
the back of the notecard for an exit slip; show what percent of students
understood the daily lesson.
Reflection: Students may want to eat the M&M’s from the activity before it is complete. Students may have
hard time paying attention while sitting with a partner during the entire lesson. There is a possibility that our
technology would not work. Because Easter break is right around the corner, the students may be less focused
and more energetic. In addition, the weather is nice and students may be antsy to get outside and play.
Resource(s): Note cards will be provided at the beginning of class for bell ringer activity and also exit
activity. During the lesson, teachers will hand out the m&ms for the activity. After the activity, the
addition worksheet will be handed out to all students.
