Standard Operating Procedure


Ultrasonic (UT) Inspection

1.0 Scope

Ultrasonic (UT) examination is performed to provide the inspection and testing


coverage necessary on the Plates weld and joints on the truss.
Ultrasonic (UT) examination shall consist of the following inspection and testing
methods.
a) Calibration of UT Equipment (Use standard block) 
b) Preparation visual inspection & weldments)
c) Ultrasonic testing of the weldments side from face a and b with using couplant,
d) Check display (screen) on UT Equipment, then analysis and record.
e) Make report of the record that joints checked on the truss and handover to the
concern personnel.
f) Make TIMESHEET/MOM of particular day whatever testing performed by
personnel and get signed by concern personnel and deposited to the document
controller.

2.0 Personnel Qualifications


a) Personnel performing this procedure shall be classified as a minimum, Level II
b) Level II inspectors shall be under the supervision of an on-site inspector who is
going to witnessed you.
c) Personnel should have basic knowledge of standards like ;
 ASME SEC-IX
 ASME SEC-V
 ASME SEC-VIII DIV-A,B,C
 AWS

3.0 Reference Documents


The following documents are referenced in preparation of this procedure and should be
available on the job site location.
a) ASME SEC V
b) ASME SEC VIII
c) AWS
d) Customer Specification, as applicable if any
4.0 Equipment:

Equipment required to perform ultrasonic inspection as applicable is as follows ;

 UT flaw detector
 Probes
 Appropriate cables
 Steel ruler
 Permanent marker
 Log book
 Dust removal clothes /tissue
 PPE(helmet, reflector jacket, safety shoes)

5.0 UT Examination procedure of the weld


a) Positive identification of the weld/joint to be inspect must be confirmed, such as but
not limited to joint no., equipment No/process line, weld identification ,wed
specification size, mark number, drawing number, probe type, probe angle, defect
location defect AWS reading all shall be noted by the personnel.
b) Preparing Risk Assessment before start working.
c) Ladder, scaffolding or climbing devices should be approved if any
d) Cleaning all surfaces where UT is to be performed and assured before inspection.
All inspection surface areas shall be cleaned to insure removal of dirt, grease, spatters
lubricants, scale, or other contaminates, filled of all the under fill besides of the
welding.
e) Calibrating UT equipment with use calibration standard block (IIW v1 block)
f) Apply proper couplant on the area where UT have to performed.
g) Patching the UT probe on the surface and slow move then check display or screen
on UT equipment.
h) All relevant indication (found) of the moment inspection must be analysis and
record.
i) Clean up all tools and equipment and working area after finish the job.
j) Preparing UT inspection Report and signed UT level II, Customer.
