A 3.2 kilometer section of the Swat Expressway in Pakistan has been affected by landslides. The National Highway Authority of Pakistan is rehabilitating this road section by designing a retaining wall structure to mitigate landslide hazards. Engineering students are asked to propose and design a suitable breast wall structure considering site conditions and design codes. The maximum backfill height is 20 feet and the backfill material is silty sand. The assignment is due on April 10th and will be assessed based on report format, teamwork, problem-solving approach, and design accuracy.

Complex Engineering Problem

Subject: Design of Structures Submission Date: 10 April 2020

A road section of chainage (+52-182 mi to +52-225 mi) on Swat Expressway M-16 is affected by a
heavy landslide. NHA HQ Islamabad intends to rehabilitate the affected section of road by mitigating
effects of landslide hazard. For that purpose, propose and design a suitable breast wall structure by
considering the appropriate code and weather conditions. The maximum height of backfill at the either
corner of road is 20ft. The backfill material shall be silty sand
