Marwell Wildlife is dedicated to the conservation of biological diversity and other natural
resources.

As a charity, we are action oriented and at the forefront of conservation work around the world,
working in partnership with communities, statutory agencies and other non-governmental
organisations.

We engage with over 35,000 children and young people through our conservation educational
programmes, and welcome over 500,000 visitors each year to our 140 acre zoological park. In every
contact we seek to encourage understanding, and inspire care for the natural world.

Role Profile part one – Role Requirements (Job Description)

Job Title: Collection Manager


Grade/Salary: Available on request
Hours: 40 hours per week, including weekend and bank holiday rotas as required
Location: Marwell Wildlife
Reports to: Curator
Management: Line management responsibility for team of Zoo Keepers and others as
required
Role Purpose and Role • Manage, mentor and develop a team of professional animal
Dimensions managers.
• Contribute to the strategic planning of the park and animal
collection.
• Lead and enhance the management of specific taxa within the
animal collection, including development of husbandry and
related policy & practises, and contributions to enclosure design.
• Facilitate & support scientific and educational functions of the
team
• Maintain the safety of staff, and the safety and security of animals
in the collection
• Wellbeing of staff including proactive pastoral care in line with HR
requirements and brand values
• Represent Marwell nationally and internationally in the zoological
community

Financial Dimensions: Contribute to the preparation and prudent management of the
departmental budget
Key Accountabilities and Result Areas
Planning
• Prepare for & attend regular section or departmental meetings / undertake agreed actions

Animal Collection Management


• Develop and delegate the implementation of species plans, including population management
& husbandry routines
• Maintain communications with relevant studbook managers, EEP Coordinators, and manage
animal transactions
• Monitor the quality of animal care, including standards of husbandry, environmental
enrichment, record keeping & bio-security.
• Liaise with Curatorial and Veterinary teams to agree specific interventions as required
• Support the development of animal welfare audit and programme of preventative medicine
• Facilitate zoological research
• Maintain & enhance animal enclosures

Human Resources
• Recruitment of staff including one month, three month and (where necessary) six month
probationary reviews
• Provide team leadership, manage & mentor staff
• Oversee team staffing, rotas & resourcing
• Act as a role model concerning all the Marwell brand value behaviours
• Proactive pastoral care toward enhanced staff wellbeing, including connection to HR
partnership or AXA support services as required
• Undertake all HR processes including and not limited to payroll administration, family leave
requests, sickness absence monitoring, return to work interviews, grievance investigations and
disciplinary hearings
• Provide six monthly appraisals for team members
• Contribute to the design and delivery of continued professional development for animal
management staff
• Undertake exit interviews of staff, when requested

Health & safety


• Monitor & ensure adherence to health and safety policy & procedures.
• Maintain & update risk assessments, implement and monitor specific H&S measures.
• Contribute to the development & dissemination of emergency procedures - practice and enact
as required.

Communications, education & public awareness


• Share relevant information & disseminate organisational news & updates to the team
• Routinely ensure park-wide communications of collection news
• Facilitate and participate in education, media and marketing initiatives as required
• Report on the status of the animal collection as required
• Represent Marwell at appropriate national & international meetings & forums

Compliance & best practise


• Support & participate in Zoo Licence inspections, and other audits as required
• Contribute to the development & dissemination of Ethical, Population Management, and
Animal Welfare policies
• Ensure section adherence to environmental policy & procedures
Role Profile part two – Person Specification

Qualifications • Minimum Level 3 (ANC) or equivalent qualification in animal


management or biological sciences.

Experience • Wide-ranging experience and track record of exotic animal


management, including specialist taxonomic knowledge
• Established track record in the zoological community
• Experience of managing teams and of successfully handling complex
people management issues
• Understanding of budget & other resource management

Skills and Abilities • Ability to mentor & provide support for professional and personal
development
• Aptitude for innovative problem solving and addressing complex
issues
• Strong communication & conflict resolution skills
• Meeting facilitation skills
• Planning & project management
• IT skills and proficiency in use of software (word processing,
spreadsheets, presentations)
Other • Contemporary knowledge of exotic animal husbandry

• Knowledge of issues affecting zoological collections and their
contributions to conservation, science & education
