Zones of Housing: The Private or Sleeping Zones

The document divides a house interior into three zones: the private zone containing bedrooms and bathrooms, the living zone containing living and dining areas, and the working zone containing the kitchen and laundry. The private zone should be separated from noise, while the living zone should be accessible from the entrance. The kitchen is the center of the working zone and should allow oversight of the other zones and outdoor areas. The three zones should be separated so activities in one do not interfere with others.

ZONES OF HOUSING

A practical approach is to divide the interior spaces into zones by their layout. Broadly
speaking three zones identified for houses design:

THE PRIVATE OR SLEEPING ZONES:

1. It comprises the bedrooms, bathrooms and dressing rooms.
2. These should located so that they are away from noise of other rooms.
3. It should be possible to move from bedrooms to the bathroom in this zone without
going through the other zones.

THE LIVING OR SOCIAL ZONES:

1. It consists of living , dinning, recreation room or enclosed porch.
2. The guest entrance should lead to the entrance of the center of house.
3. There should be direct access to the living area.
4. A noise and visibility barrier should between the guest entrance or private areas.

THE WORKING OR SERVICE ZONE:

1. It includes kitchen, laundry, pantry, and other work areas.

2. The work zone the nerve center of the house. From here the housewife directs the
household activities kitchen is the main work center in the work zone that revolves
around the housewife. Therefore, the relationship the kitchen and rest of the house
is the most important key to good interior layout.
3. From kitchen, it should be possible to control both the guest and the family
entrance, activities in the sleeping or private and living or social zones plus activities
outdoors.

The 3 zones should be separated from each other so that activities in one do
not interfere with activities in another. It is easier to locate social zones on two
separate floors, the private and requiring concentration room could be 1 st floor where
as living, dining and kitchen could be concealed from dinning by the mean of screen.
