SA4 – Assignment n. 1

Title
In situ inspection and damage survey of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Guimarães.

Rules
The assignment must be carried out in groups of four/five students (different from SA7 groups). Each
group shall carry out the in-situ inspection of the Church and elaborate a preliminary report about its
conservation status. The report must follow the template provided at the end of this document.
The assignment must be submitted on October 11th, 2019.

Objectives
Students have to perform the visual inspection of the Oliveira Church, located in the historical centre
of Guimarães. The Church presents various damages and deterioration processes. The owner is
concerned with the conservation status of the building and wants a preliminary inspection & diagnosis
report with recommendations on maintenance and preventive conservation actions to undertake in
the short term, prior to further diagnostic investigations and safety analysis procedures.

SA4 – INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS

The inspection is expected to be finished in 3 hours of site works. For inspection, students are
advised to have a digital camera, measure tapes, cracks scales, drawings of the building and a
Checklist of items to inspect.

Tasks
T1

Prior to the inspection task, students will search for information in order to get a general overview of
the case study and properly prepare their subsequent site work by defining:

• An inspection plan;
• The checklist of items to inspect;
• Inspection tools to use.

T2

Historical survey of the construction and interpretation:

• Name of the building, category and urban contextualization;


• Construction period, historical value and listed status;
• Original and current function;
• Main construction systems, components and constituent materials;
• Historical documentation (bibliographic references, original drawings, sketches, construction
phases, functional and structural alterations, additions, demolitions);
• Previous restorations, interventions and maintenance actions;
• Other useful technical data.

T3

During and after the inspection the students have to carry out the following subtasks:

• Confirm the geometrical survey and other existing data;


• Photographic survey;
• Damage survey:
o Damages should be identified and categorized according to the HeritageCare damage
classification, pointing out possible causes and consequences
o Cracks should be characterized according to:
▪ Size (length, width, depth)
▪ Pattern (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, stair ...)
▪ Location
▪ Age

• Damage mapping:
o Damage representation should be carried out according to the HeritageCare damage
code.
• Damage interpretation.

T4

Finally, the students have to produce a preliminary inspection & diagnosis report with the following
table of contents:

• Executive summary
• Introduction (with general information about the inspected building)
• Historical Survey
• Inspection procedures (methods and tools);
• All collected information;
• Damage description, mapping and interpretation;
• A list of recommendations/repairs and proposals for further investigations and inspections.

Large drawings and extensive photographic surveys should appear in annex.

Available Elements
AutoCAD drawings of the building, damage representation code, crack scales and measure tapes.
