Course Objectives This course deals with the basic concepts and principle of strength of
materials in order to calculate stresses and deformation of objects
under external loadings. The objective of this course is to give an
ability to apply the knowledge of strength of materials on engineering
applications and design problems.

Determine the internal resultant loading in a body, calculate and understand the
LO1
concepts of stress and strain
Show how stress can be related to strain by using experimental methods to
LO2 determine the stress-strain diagram for a specific material and determine the
related mechanical properties
Determine the normal stress in axially loaded members and solve a statically
LO3
indeterminate axially loaded members.
Determine both the stress distribution within the member and the angle of twist
LO4 when the material behaves in a linear elastic manner of circular or tubular shafts
and discuss statically indeterminate analysis of shafts and tubes.
Establish the bending moment and shear force diagrams which provide a useful
LO5 means for determining the largest shear and moment in a member and specify
where these maximums occur.
Determine the flexural and shear stresses in beams and shafts caused by bending
LO6 and transverse shear for straight members of linear elastic behavior.
LO7 Analysis of thin-walled vessels.
Evaluate the state of stress in two and three-dimensional simple combined loading
LO8 problems.

A grade of zero will be assigned for any missed exam unless a valid excuse is submitted.
Homework Format All homework should be submitted on the due date. Homework will
be graded and returned by the next week for the appropriate solution.
Late homework will be penalized 50% per class period. No
homework or projects will be accepted after the last day of classes.
Your homework should be written on clean A4 sheets (notebook
sheets are not accepted). The sheets should be stapled. Each
homework problem should be clearly written before presenting the
solution. Assignments which are not Neat and Unordered will be
rejected.
Academic Honesty Students are expected to complete all work with the highest standard
of integrity in line with MU’s Student Code of Conduct. Submitting
someone else’s work as your own is not tolerated. The assignments
are scaled to be small enough in size that they may be completed by
the individual student. The instructor realizes that homework is
frequently a collaborative task, and understands that some students
may require some help. Students who collaborate with others are
expected to write their homework by themselves on clean A4 sheets.
Students are not expected to collaborate on examinations. If the
instructor determines that academic dishonesty has occurred, the
student(s) involved will normally be given an immediate grade of “F”
and dropped from the course.
Class Policies Class participation is expected and will form a part of the final grade.
Students are expected to attend all class sessions and to be on time.
Roll will be called each class meeting. Classes missed for legitimate
reasons, such as illness or temporary duty assignments are excusable.
The student is expected to make up the missed work by making
arrangements with the instructor. The student is responsible for
providing the Student Affairs Office (SAO) with justification for an
excused absence either prior to or immediately after the absence.
Students who come late to class will not be allowed to attend the
session unless they get written permission from SAO.

A student who misses an exam must fill a petition and present a valid
excuse in order for him/her to sit for a make-up exam, otherwise the
student will receive a grade of zero.
In order to receive permission for a make-up exam, the student must
submit a make-up petition form at SAO within 72 hours from the
missed exam time.
