Final Draft One Page Philosophy

I believe all students are unique individuals with different strengths and weaknesses,

longing for purpose, confidence, and achieving potential in life. As a teacher, it is my obligation

to discern these different facets, understanding their unique backgrounds, and then equip students

with tools and resources (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) for growth. My main goal is to

first and foremost teach people, and I get to do this through music. Students will learn basic

melodic and rhythmic skills, but more importantly they will have the ability to create, perform,

respond, and connect with music and to the greater world around them. My job is to foster a safe,

creative musical environment through collaboration and discussion. I will encourage students to

work alongside myself and their peers to develop critical thinking skills.

The core tenants of my philosophy I strive to instill in my students are:

  I.          Maturity (“completeness”): I will push students to continually strive toward

completeness and fullness in their personality and work, musical and non-musical. By

sequencing instruction, I can help students take feasible steps to reaching their dreams and

achieving goals that make them better people and musicians.

II.          Compassion (“to suffer together”): I will teach students the skills to use music as a

means of expression and a way to relate to others through dynamics and phrasing (musical

skills), as well as how to empathize with others and search for ways to help (non-musical skills).

Students will learn by doing and experiencing, not only by what I say.

III.          Perseverance (“persistence”): The most growth we have in our lives stems from

the times where we struggle the most; however, the key is how we react to difficult situations

and stand up after them. I will provide multiple opportunities and repetitions for students to

develop good habits of perseverance, to create and receive feedback, and to allow them the space

to challenge ideas and put their own into practice.

I will respect, hear, and value every student.
