Tutorial 5

This document provides data on the adsorption of propane on activated carbon at different temperatures and pressures. It includes: 1) Tables of pressure (p) and amount adsorbed (q) values for propane adsorption on activated carbon at 311K, 338.7K, and 397K. 2) A question asking to draw adsorption isotherms at the three temperatures and adsorption isosteres at constant loadings, and test the applicability of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. 3) A table of pressure (p) and volume adsorbed (v) values for nitrogen adsorption on an oxidation catalyst at 77.4K. 4

(a) Draw the adsorption isotherms (q vs p) at the above three temperatures and the
adsorption isostere (ln p vs 1/T) at constant solute loadings of q= 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5
(mmol/g carbon).
(b) Test the applicability of the Langmuir &Freundlich isotherms for the given data.
