Making Adjustments To Balance An Engines Power Share Between Units
Making Adjustments To Balance An Engines Power Share Between Units
Question
Describe how good cylinder power balance may be restored in a medium speed engine
driving an electrical generator.
Answer
To achieve good cylinder power balance, firstly compression pressures must be compared
to establish that they are equal. Any deviation causing a loss of compression must be
corrected.
Once correct, the difference between compression pressures and peak pressures for each
cylinder is examined, taking into account the relative fuel rack settings and exhaust
temperatures. If there are any large differences, then an attempt can be made to balance
the power output by adjusting the fuel rack settings.
Each adjustment made must be small, noted, and time allowed for the engine to adjust to
the change. If a cylinder pressure, exhaust temperature and fuel rack setting are found
low, then the fuel rack setting for that particular cylinder can be increased. (Fuel injection
should be checked first if any change has been noted).
If the fuel on one cylinder is increased, then the fuel on the other cylinders will decrease
for the same load setting. Care must be taken not to keep increasing the fuel rack settings,
as the pumps may not return to the no-load position when the engine is stopped.
Sometime it is necessary to reduce fuel rack settings on cylinders which are at a higher
load. When adjustments are completed, a further set of peak pressures is taken. All
readings plus adjustments made are recorded in the log book / planned maintenance
records for reference.
