2 : Career Paths

1.1.2 - Identify the scope of career opportunities and the requirements for education,

training, certification, licensure, and experience

I choose to display my career path in the form of an explanatory video. This video shares

my high school preparation for college, the steps I will be taking to get into college, what I will

be studying in college, and my plans for after college as a teacher (evidence 3.2.1).

History and English have always been my favorite subjects in school. As a high school

student I decided to challenge myself in the subject areas I found most interesting. Therefore, I

would gain an even better understanding of the subjects I could potentially teach in the future.

The classes I have taken include AP U.S. History, AP Psychology, AP Literature and

Composition, and AP Language and Composition and Teacher Academy. I also learned from a

teacher panel survey that as a college student, you can major in education but have an emphasis

on a certain subject area, which can make you more marketable when applying for a job

(evidence 3.2.2). While in high school, I also took the ACT and submitted that as a part of my

college application. I plan on attending Otterbein University, a small liberal arts college located

in Westerville, Ohio and I am planning on majoring in middle childhood education.

I also completed self assessments such as the 16 Personalities test to demonstrate my

compatibility for teaching. According to the test, my personality type is “Advocate” or INFJ-A.

One of the factors of the test is that I am 54% more introverted than extroverted. The test also

states that advocate personalities “need to find meaning in their work and to know that they are
helping and connecting with people”. I agree with this because I feel teaching will give me the

opportunity to help others and give back to society (evidence 3.2.3).

While in Teacher Academy, I researched other careers in education, aside from teaching.

I have an interest in teaching and my field placements from Teacher Academy will help solidify

if teaching is a good fit for me. I have analyzed a flow chart of different positions within

education and further understood how they relate to one another (evidence 3.2.4). As a class, we

took a trip to the Olentangy administration building and heard from the superintendent, the

teachers association president, and a school board member about their careers (evidence 3.2.5). It

was beneficial to hear more about other jobs within a school district and how these individuals

got to the position they are in.
