CHAPTER 4

Difficulties of a Student in Passing Grade 10 in Divine Word College of

Legazpi for the SY: 2015-2016

This chapter presents the findings, analysis and interpretation of the data

regarding this study entitled “Difficulties of the students in passing grade 10 in

Divine Word College of Legazpi for the SY: 2015 – 2016.”

1. What are the common problems encountered by Grade 10 students?

Based on our survey we’ve conducted, most of the respondents’ problem is

about bullying that are half of the respondents being bullied that is shown in

table1.1. Also, the respondents are afraid to make a mistake that’s why they

don’t have confidence, shown in table 1.9.

2. What are the causes and effects of this problem?

According to the results of our survey, table 2.3 shows that parents

role/disciplinary action can affect the grades of the students. Too much school

activities can also affect the respondent’s grades shown in table 2.4. In the table

2.7 most of the respondents said that the gadgets have a bad effects on their

grades. Also, in table 2.9 most of the respondents agreed that lack of sleep can

affect the grades. That’s why some of them get a low grades.

3. How to survive grade 10?

From our results in our survey, table 3.1 most of the respondents want to study

well to improve their grades and based on table 3.6 respondents like to pass all

assignments/projects in order to get high grades. This is the thing needed in

order to survive or pass grade 10.

Based on Table A, 75% of the respondents are age 16, 18% of the respondents

has an age of 15 and a 7% of 17 years old.

In Table C shows that all sections and respondents are equal. 20% from St.

Damasus, 20% from St. Damiane, 20% from St. Daniel, 20% form St. Denis and

20% from St. Dominic.

I. What are the common problems encountered by Grade 10 students?

29% of the respondents says that no one bullies them, 50% of the respondents

say that sometimes they encounter bullying while 19% of the respondents says

that they encounter bullying and 2% of the respondents says that they encounter

bullying always. It is shown on Table 1.1.

Based on the survey we’ve conducted 58% of the respondent responds that they

forget to pass their assignments/projects sometimes only. While 23% respond

yes that they forget to pass assignments/projects, 16% respond that they don’t

forget to pass their assignments/projects, and 4% respond that they always

forget to pass their assignments/projects as shown on Table 1.2.

It shows in Table 1.3 that 49% of the respondents answers that sometimes they

forget to study before quarterly exam while 24% answer no and 28% answered

that they forget to study before quarterly exam.

Table 1.4 presents that 48% of the respondents answered that sometimes they

have a bad study habits, 32% answered yes and 23% answered that they don’t

have bad study habits.

As presented in Table 1.5, 36% of the respondents sometimes play computer

games after school, 32% says yes, 28% says no and 5% say that they always

play computer games after school.

Table 1.6 confirmed that 76% of the respondents commit absence and 24% say

that they don’t commit absence regularly.

A total of 55% of the respondents didn’t come to school late regularly and a total

Table 1.8 presented that 51% of the respondents sometimes they find it hard to

ask the teacher about the topic they don’t understand, 30% says that they find it

hard and 19% say that they did’nt find it hard to ask the teacher about the topic

they didn’t understand.

A total of 43% of the respondents answered that they are afraid to make

mistakes, 34% answered sometimes and a total of 23% of the respondents are

not afraid to make mistakes as shown in Table 1.9.

Table 1.10 confirms that 44% of the respondents say that they participate in

discussion, a total of 40% say that they just participate sometimes, 11% say that

they don’t participate in discussion and 5% say that they always participate in

discussion.

II. What are the causes and effects of this problem?

It shows in Table 2.I that 41% of the respondents disagreed that their friends

have bad effects on their studies also 41% of them said that sometimes it has

bad effects on their studies, while 18% of them said that their friends have bad

effects on them.

Table I - A 5 presents that 38% of the students said that the role/disciplinary

action of their parents doesn’t affect their grades, 34% of them said it sometimes

affects them and 28% of them said that it does.

Table 2.3 presents that 38% of the students said that the role/disciplinary action

of their parents affect their grades, 37% of them said it sometimes affects them

and 25% of them said that it didn’t affect their grades.

45% respondents said that school activities affects their grades, 42% of them

said it sometimes affects their grades and 13% of them said it does, as shown in

Table 2.4.

Table 2.5 shows 44% of the students in question 2.5 says that it is sometimes

hard to ask about the topic to teacher, 34% of them says that it is hard to ask,

while 22% of them said it is not hard to ask the teacher.

As presented in Table 2.6 48% of the respondents said that teenage love doesn’t

affect their grades, 27% of the respondents said that sometimes it affects their

grades and 25% respondents said that teenage love affects their grades.

Specifically Table 2.7 says 35% of the respondents said that gadgets have bad

effects on their grades, 34% of them said that sometimes gadgets have bad

effects on their grades and 31% of them said that it does.

In Table 2.8 says that majority of the respondents say they are comfortable in

their classroom atmosphere, 18% say no and 26% say that sometimes they are

comfortable in their classroom atmosphere.

Table 2.9 confirms that 43% of the students say that lack of sleep affects their

grades, 29% say that they are sometimes affected by this and the remaining 28%

say that lack of sleep didn’t affects their grades.

Table 2.10 presented that 48% of the respondents say that they pass their

homework and projects on time, 40% say that they pass their homeworks and

projects sometimes and 12% answered no.

III. THE THINGS NEEDED IN ORDER TO SURVIVE GRADE 10

A total of 52.59% of the respondents answered that it was easier to improve their

grades if they study well, 26.72% by listening well to the teacher, 19.83% say

that it’s easier if they do self-study and 0.86% answer that it’s easier to improve

their grades when they participate in discussion as shown in Table 3.1.

Table 3.2 presented that 45.54% of the respondents said that it’s easier to

improve study habits by practicing time management, 37.5% say that it’s easier if

they practice self-discipline and 16.96% say that it’s easy if they practicing goal

setting.

According to Table 3.3, 42% of the respondents get their motivation from their

parents for them to get high grades is from gifts while, 34% is from words and

the remaining 24% is from pressure.

A total of 82.28% respondents said that the encouragement works, while the

remaining 14.72% of students say that it doesn’t according to Table 3.3.1.

29% of the respondents say that they spend 1 hour on studying at home, 26%

spend 3 hours, 22% spend 2 hours, 14% don’t spend time studying at home and

9% spend minutes as presented in Table 3.4.

Table 3.4.1 shows that a total of 67.07% of the respondents get average grades,

19.51% of the respondents get low grades and 13.41% respondents get high

grades.

Table 3.5 states that 30.95% respondents spend time on using gadgets, 28.57%

spend time on studying, 19.84% spend time on using computer, 11.90% spend

time on watching T.V. shows/programs and an 8.73% spend time on reading e-

books/novels.

According in Table 3.6, 63.81% respondents pass all projects/assignment in

order to get high grades, 20.95% do self studying, 6,67% of them scan their

notes everyday, 6.35% of them do advance reading and 0.95% of them

participate in discussion.
