1. What are Nutrients? Name the major Nutrients in our food.


An. The Components of food that are necessary for growth and maintenance of our body
are called Nutrients. The major nutrients in our food are – Carbohydrates, Fats,
Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Dietary fibers ( Roughage) and water.

2. How will you test the presence of starch, proteins, and fats in food items.
An.a) Starch: take a small quantity of food item, put 2-3 drops of iodine solution on it.
A blue-black colour indicates that it contains starch.
b) Proteins: Take a small quantity of food item in a test tube and add ten drops of
water to it and shake the test tube. After that add 2 drops of solutions of copper
sulphate and ten drops of caustic soda. A violet colour indicates the presence of
protein in the food item.
c) Fats: Take a small quantity of food item in a piece of paper and crush. If the
paper at that spot becomes oily, the food item contains fats.

3. Mention different groups (components) of food and explain each with examples.
An. a) Carbohydrates (Energy giving food): Carbohydrates provide energy to our
body.
Sources: Rice, Wheat, Potato etc…
b) Fats(Energy giving food): They also give us energy. They produce more energy
than Carbohydrates.
Sources: Oil, Nuts, Milk, Egg etc…
c) Proteins(Body building food): Proteins are needed for growth and maintenance
of our body.
Sources: Grams, Peas, Fish, Meat, Egg etc.
d) Vitamins(Protective food):
Vitamins help in protecting our body against diseases, also in keeping our
eyes , bones, teeth
And gums healthy.
e) Minerals(Protective food): Minerals are important for the proper growth of the
body and to maintain good health.

An. (a) Some Vitamins needed by our body are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D.
The Functions are:
Vitamin A: Vitamin A keeps our skin and eye healthy.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps body to fight against many diseases.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D helps our body to use calcium for bones and teeth
An. (b) Sources of Vitamin A: Milk, Papaya, Carrot, Fish oil
Sources of Vitamin C: Guava, Tomato, Orange, Lemon
Sources of Vitamin D: Fish, Egg, Milk, Butter

5. What are dietary fibres? How is it important to us? Name some source of it.
An. Dietary fibres are also known as roughage. Roughage does not provide any nutrient
to our body, but is an essential component of our food and adds to its bulk. This helps
our body to get rid of undigested food. Whole grains and pulses, Potatoes, Fresh Fruits
and Vegetables are main sources of roughage.

6. Write the importance of water in our body.


An. Water helps our body to absorb nutrients from food. It also helps in throwing out
some wastes from body as urine and sweat.
7. Define balanced diet.
An. A Diet containing the entire nutrient in right quantities, with adequate amount of
roughage and water for the growth and maintenance of good health.

8. What is the effect of cooking on nutrients?


An. Cooking improves and the taste of food and makes easier to digest. At the same time
cooking also results in the loss of certain nutrients. Many useful protein and
considerable amount of minerals and lost, if excess water is used during cooking and is
then thrown away.

9. What are deficiency diseases? How can we prevent all deficiency diseases?
An. Diseases that occur due to lack of nutrients over a long period all called deficiency
diseases. All deficiency diseases can be prevented by taking a balanced diet.

10. List down the symptom caused due to deficiency of


(a) Proteins
An. The symptoms due to the deficiency of proteins are, stunted growth, swelling of
face, discolouration of hair, skin diseases and diarrhoea.

(b) Carbohydrates and proteins for a long time.


An. If the diet is deficient in carbohydrate and protein for a long period of time, the
growth may stop completely. Such persons become very lean and thin and so weak
that he may not even be able to move.

11. Draw a table showing the diseases caused by the deficiency of Vitamins and Minerals.
