Time Expressions with the Past Perfect

Example: John does his homework.... The class starts.


By the time the class started, John had done his homework.
The class started after John had done his homework.
John had done his homework before the class started.
John had already done his homework when the class started.
The class started at 6pm. By then John had done his homework.
I had just finished my homework when the bell rang.

Use a range of past tenses including (e.g. the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect) to write
short stories:-

John ___was hiking__(hike) through the forest when he ____saw___(see) a unicorn. He


____called to__(call to) his friends but by the time they ____arrived___ (arrive) the unicorn
__had disappeared___(disappear). His friends ____said_______(say) he was crazy.

Rachel ____was cooking lunch___(cook lunch) when the doorbell rang. Rachel
___answered__(answer) the door and the postman ___gave___(give) her a parcel. As the
postman ____was driving___(drive) away Rachel ____remembered____ (remember) the
food in the kitchen. She ___ran__ (run) back inside but it was too late. The dog ___had
already eaten___ (already / eat) it.

The hairdresser ____had just coloured______ (just /colour) my hair. She ____dried____ (dry)
it while I ____read____(read) a magazine. When I __looked__(look) in the mirror I was
horrified. She ____has dyed___(dye) my hair pink!

Rosa ____was walking____(walk) through Guadalajara when it ___started to rain__ (start to


rain). As she ___was wearing__(wear) her new suit, she ___had decided to buy___(decide to
buy ) an umbrella in Corte Ingles. It __was__(be) December so the queues ___were__(be)
huge. Before Rosa ____leaved___(leave) the shop the rain ___had stopped__ (stop).

As we ___were treking_____(trek) through the jungle we ___had seen____ (see) a tiger.


Fortunately, it __had already eaten___ (already/ eat).
