Reading Lesson Plan

The reading lesson plan compares and contrasts dolphins found in the Amazon river and regular ocean dolphins. Students will read a text about Encantado, the pink dolphin of the Amazon, and complete a Venn diagram comparing Amazon and ocean dolphins. Key differences that will be discussed include Amazon dolphins being pink and living in rivers while ocean dolphins are blue/gray and live in the ocean. Students will then independently practice comparing and contrasting through a worksheet and discussion of why the skill is important. The teacher reflected that most students grasped the skill but a few need more practice opportunities.

Reading Lesson Plan

Name: Trinity Belcher Date: 1/23/20

Subject: ELA Topic: Compare and Contrast

Grade: 4th Length of Lesson: 30 minutes

The Big Idea: I can read a text and compare and contrast two or more things from it.
Domain: Reading

Cluster: Key Ideas and Details

Standard: ELA.4.4
Refer to details and examples in an informational text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Specific Objective: Students will be able to use details from an informational text to compare
and contrast two or more things with an accuracy of 67%.

Introduction:
The teacher will introduce the lesson by asking the students what the story “Encantado: Pink
Dolphin of the Amazon is about.

Method(s):
Graphic organizer

Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
Dry erase boards and markers
Pearson Textbooks – Encantado
Let’s Practice It pg 196

Direct Instruction/Warm-Up Activity/Presentation/Model Lesson/Make Connections:

The teacher will explain that the students will be comparing and contrasting the dolphins in the
story and regular dolphins. The teacher will remind students what it means to compare and
contrast by comparing and contrasting the whiteboard and the smartboard. (They are both boards
that can be written on, the whiteboard can be written on with markers at any time and needs to be
erased and cleaned, while the smartboard has to be written on with the digital markers or a finger
and doesn’t need to be cleaned, etc.).
Guided Practice:
The students will have a few minutes to read pages 62 and 63 of the story. On dry erase boards,
the students will each draw a venn diagram to compare the amazon dolphins to ocean dolphins.
The teacher will read the first sentence out loud, pausing to ask the students what they can
already add to their venn diagrams (the amazon dolphins are pink). The teacher will continue the
paragraph and ask the students what else they can add (amazon dolphins live in rivers, ocean
dolphins live in the ocean). The teacher will continue to walk the students through the next
paragraph. Then the students will finish going through the section, working together with their
groups. When the students are done, the teacher will randomly select students to add information
for the teacher to write in a Venn diagram drawn on the board until all of the information has
been written.

Independent Practice:
Students will complete Let’s Practice It page 196 on their own.

Differentiation:
Students will work in groups of mixed abilities during the guided practice. Lower level students
will meet in a small group with the teacher during independent practice to receive additional
modeling and assistance with comparing and contrasting as needed.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will be formatively assessed based on the completion of the worksheet.

Wrap-Up (Lesson Closure) /Concluding Activity:

The teacher will close the lesson by asking the students to discuss why comparing and
contrasting is an important skill.

Lesson Reflection:
This lesson was fairly successful. Most of the students seemed have a good grasp on comparing
and contrasting, with the exception of a few lower level and on level students. I will work closely
with them, providing more opportunities to practice the skill in the future.
