For this paper, we’re going to talk about the Ignatian Discernment. In which
according to Gallagher in his book The Discernment of Spirits, it is a process by which
we become aware of the movements in our hearts, understand where they come from,
and either accept or reject them. According to Challies (2007), discernment is also
directed toward action: not enough to see and understand what is happening in our life,
we must choose good and reject what is evil. Spiritual discernment is good for more than
just making monumental decisions according to God’s will. It is an essential, day-to-day
activity that allows thoughtful Christians to separate the truth of God from error and to
distinguish right from wrong in all kinds of settings and situations. It is also a skill—
something that any person can develop and improve.
Having a discerning heart is a call for wise decision making. It is a process that helps
us find answers to our inquiries and making decisions in our light of our faith. It is
concerned with finding the will God in the events of our daily life with regard to our
major choices.
SKILLS IN DISCERNMENT
1. AN EXPERIENCE OF GOD
It is essential that we have experienced God in our lives. Scripture teaches us that
presence of God can be felt through our human experiences. these experiences
tell us that God is real, He is near, and that he loves us. It is said that our faith can
grow through these religious experiences.
Ignacio de Loyola proposes rules in discernment which helps us understand how the
spiritual life works, how the Holy Spirit operates vs. the devil, what spiritual consolation
looks like vs. desolation and how to fight temptation and become free from spiritual
oppression.
2. Visual presentation
3. Key words
1. Purgative aims to eliminate serious sin and vice from our life through
renunciation and penance
2. Illuminative is the enlightening of the mind and heart with God’s grace and
sacraments
3. Unitive is ultimately the reality of heaven—experiencing union with God. The
saints show us how it is possible to live this reality even while on earth.
4. Consolation shows us where God is active in our lives and where he is leading
us
5. Desolation takes over our whole consciousness and crowds out our distant
vision
4. What new information this you learn from the topic? Include their
meanings.
New information that we learned from this topic is that consolation sometimes
comes with desolation. We all go through desolation in our phase in life but also at the
same time we make our way back to God with the help of consolation. Desolation is
when we tend to move away from God or feel detached while consolation, it is when God
is guiding us and we seek for his advice. As a student, I’ve went through this phase
countless of times. I’ve had my ups and downs but still, at the end of the day I still go
back to God.
We learned that discernment has its own rules to follow proposed by St. Ignatius.
These rules somehow teach us to recognize the Devil’s tactics and overcome them with
God’s help and following God’s will for us. The Spiritual life is ultimately about learning
to recognize the “voice of the Shepherd” vs. the “voice of the Serpent”. Because of this
new information I’ve acquired, I’ll be able to recognize what’s good and what’s not. With
this, we are able to lead ourselves ott he right path the guidance of God within us.
Discernment does not only concern us but also the people surrounding us in everyday of
our lives. Our decisions in life affect the people that surrounds us. It is somehow a
domino effect. At the end of the day, it is only us who can determine whether we will
walk the right path or go astray.
