He is considered the father of Green Revolution in India. After the British robbed India,
Agriculture needed to be boosted. Borlaug was a specialist in agronomy and related genetics.
For biology students, Mexico is synonymous with genetically enhanced or modified plants.
Borlaug came from Mexico to India. He worked with M.S.Swaminathan (he is famous for his
work in the same field in India) in IARI (Indian Agricultural Research Institute to develop semi-
dwarf varieties of food crops namely wheat and rice. Semi-dwarf varieties require less inputs but
give same output as normal crops owing to their smaller stalk size. Ever heard of Sharbati
Sonora, Lerma Rojo, Sharbati-64, Safed Lerma, Sonalika?
These were the varieties of wheat developed with his help by IARI.It came in the time of need
when India had a population boom and food production was inadequate. Crop records went
through the roof after the Green Revolution.
After this,
Plant engineering began developing and India slowly became self-sufficient in food.
White, blue and yellow revolutions developed after this for milk, aquaculture and eggs
respectively. Norman Borlaug was awarded Padma Vibhushan for his contribution, Second
highest civilian award by the Government of India.
He was also awarded the Nobel Prize for peace.
So yes, he had a huge contribution to India's development.

non- agriculture use of farmland, securing gazing rights and seasonal forest access
to forest tribal were the mainland reforms suggested in the commission. It also

land use decisions with ecological and marketing factors of season and
geography- specific basis.
II. One recommendation was to reform irrigation resources and its distribution
among farmers. The commission also suggested the use of rainwater harvesting,
water level recharging to increase water supply.
While Dr Verghese Kurian was indeed the father of the White Revolution, the seeds of this
inspiring saga were laid by several others. Their names are highlighted in bold letters below.
In 1946, a group of marginal farmers of Khera District. led by Tribhuvandas Patel, approached
Sardar Patel with their grievance. Polson, a Bombay based dairy had a monopoly on the
collection of milk from the farmers of Khera and supplying it to Bombay city. They paid a
pittance to the farmers and made huge profits at their expense.
Sardar Patel asked them to form a co-operative and directly supply milk to Bombay, He also
directed Morarji Desai to assist the farmers in setting up co-operative societies and running
them under the leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel.
In 1950, a young engineer, V Kurian joined the fledgling dairy and he hired the services of
refugee from Karachi, H M Dalaya, a dairy expert and a classmate of his from the Michigan State
University. While Kurian handled the marketing and statutory aspects, the technical aspects
were handled by Dalaya, who had invented a method of producing milk powder from Buffalo
milk, something that experts said was impossible to do.
Under the leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel, Kurian and Dalaya, the cooperative movement
spread all over Gujarat and in 1966, the services of Sylvester Da Cunha, the marketing guru were
hired to launch a highly successful advertising campaign which made Amul (an acronym of
Anand Milk Union Ltd) a household brand. Under the creative genius called Bharat Dabholkar,
the Amul ads had a devoted fan following all over India.
