Problem/Question:: Science Lab Report

This science lab report describes an experiment testing how the amount of baking soda affects the length of a black snake produced by burning a mixture of baking soda, powdered sugar, and lighter fluid on a plate of sand. The hypothesis was that more baking soda would produce a longer snake. The experiment found that adding more baking soda did not consistently make the snake longer, as the reaction became weaker. The black snake is formed by the carbon dioxide released during burning causing a reaction between the baking soda and powdered sugar that caramelizes the sugar.

Problem/Question:

The problem of this experiment is to let the students see what will happen if we mix baking soda and
powder sugar then put it on the sand and burn it

The question:

What is the longest black snake we can make based on how much baking soda we put?

Hypothesis: (Predict the outcome(s) of the experiment.

When we add more baking soda the black snake would become longer

Materials/Resources used for the experiment

-Sand

-Baking soda

-Powder sugar

-Lighter fluid

-Lighter

-Plate

Procedure (What steps were taken in this experiment or activity?)

-First of all, we put the sand on the plate.

-We mix the powder sugar and baking soda.

-We put them on top of the sand.

-We will add the lighter fluid to help burn the mixture.

-We light it up to release carbon dioxide, so it interacts.

-Repeat the experiment with a different amount of baking soda.

Data Recording- What information was collected? This may be in pictures, charts, graphs, etc.

Discussion- Discuss what happened in the lab. Be specific and give details.

We hypothesized that when we add more baking soda, the snake will grow more, but after we did our
experiment, we saw that adding more baking soda did not make the black snake grow more where the
reaction was less. When we followed the steps and burnt the mixture to see the result, the carbon
dioxide came out from the fire and started the reaction between the powder sugar and the baking soda.
As the black snake started coming up, the appearance of it is due to the sugar being caramelized by the
heat.
