PCD Homework

The document contains homework problems on prestressed concrete design. Problem 1 involves calculating the stress in prestressing tendons, depth of the compression block, and ultimate moment capacity of a prestressed beam. Problem 2 involves calculating the stress in prestressing tendons, ultimate moment capacity, and live load capacity for a prestressed T-beam. The solutions show the step-by-step working to arrive at the answers for each part.

Prestressed Concrete Design

Homework
Name: Nikko A. Relox Date: March 17, 2020
Program/Section: E5C/BSCE

1. The beam shown is prestressed by using a bonded (stress relieved tendons) with a specified tensile
strength of prestressing tendons strength f pu=1350 MPa, f c ' =35 MPa. The area of prestressed
reinforcement in tension zone A ps =1000 mm2. The specific yield strength of prestressing tendons
f py=1160 MPa.

a) What is the value of the stress in prestressed reinforcement at nominal strength

b) What is the value of the depth of the compression block.
c) What is the ultimate moment capacity of the prestressed beam.

2. A prestressed T-beam shown which is reinforced with a bonded tendon having an area A ps =1580
mm2, f c ' =34.5 MPa, f pu=1862 MPa, and the effective stress after losses , f se=1102 MPa , f py=1713
MPa. Span of beam is 6 m.

a) What is the value of the stress in prestressed reinforcement at nominal strength ( f ps ¿

b) Find the ultimate moment capacity.
c) Find the live load for beam with simple supports.
