Reflection-Learning Launch Challenge: Selection

The entrepreneur used a learning launch approach to develop and test a low-cost waterproofing solution for rural homes in India. Through an initial prototype launch targeting a few rural areas, the entrepreneur learned that customers preferred a pre-manufactured product over the prototype. Working with marketing and IT teams and customers, the prototype was improved to better meet user needs and expectations. The learning launch process provided insights that helped re-strategize the marketing approach and focus future efforts on human-centered design.

Reflection-Learning Launch

Challenge

Construction industry in India contributes about 8.2% of GDP. This is quite impressive.
Unfortunately, the rural population behind this impressive number still lacks proper
waterproofing service in their homes. This is because companies providing waterproofing service
charge high and those people do not have enough income to afford that and due to that people
residing in homes comes across problem of leaking water from roof, resulting in damp and often
results in lots of health issues. I am an entrepreneur trying to provide water proofing solutions at
much cheap price and better quality. My challenge is to provide water proofing solution/product
using recyclable materials and build network to provide the same to rural population. This
project is a start-up included rural marketing team, sales people, IT personnels, operations team
and finance team. The time line for the project should run for at most 6 months to give product
development team ample time to create a prototype. Once we come up with the prototype,
marketing team will help us in our first go-to-market research.

Selection

As an Entrepreneur, I have decided to go for learning launch tool as it can be used to do lots of
fast and cheap experiments and tests key customers, execution and defensibility assumptions and
also quickly engaging with customers and testing key customer assumptions. I believe this will
help me in building simple yet effective product/solution that our users can experience. After
discussing and application with professors of management department in our college to building
prototype, I went through several design thinking activities to come up with go to market
prototype and that has helped me in selecting learning launch as a tool. This tool will help me in
going through iterating process that will improve product/solution.

Application

In my first launch I focused on providing a water proofing prototype using high density
polyethene sheets and plastic bottle caps which are recyclable materials. Initially I targeted first
two or three rural areas which required more attention and hired local representative to build
network and hired distributors to reach people.

This process helped me understand waterproofing market, many customers liked the idea behind
the technology. After a lengthy observation on rural customers I realized I should have focused
on human centered design instead of product centered design. I spent few days with both
marketing and IT teams together with the customers to improve on the technology to sustain in
the market. I worked through all possible solutions and settled on upgrading product design.
Insight

By applying the learning launch tool, I designed and tested solutions. Through the learning
process I got to improve product design and quality to meet user’s expectation. It is through this
process I realized that the customers were more comfortable with the pre-manufactured product
and readily install that in their homes. Marketing department used the results of this process to
re-strategize marketing campaign. Moving forward my business will focus on human centered
design to improve product.

Approach

The learning launch is the appropriate tool for my start-up as it mainly focused on fast and cheap
experiments and we can quickly engage with customers and testing key customer assumptions. I
need the insight gained from launching of product and incorporate this insight into future launch
designs as this is the most effective way of implementing solutions. Future launch designs should
reflect what are the different insight gained, what can be the progress made, and coming closer to
a compelling solution ready for full roll out.
