Composer’s Notes
Into the Deep was written for one of my closest friends, Matthew Morris. This is the third chamber work of mine
featuring the contrabassoon that has been premiered by him. His wonderfully warm, lyrical, and musical approach to
contrabassoon performance is the idealized sound I envisioned as I wrote this piece. It features warm and lyrical
melodic lines framing two church hymns quoted in the contra part and one original hymn-like song.

Into the Deep was premiere by Matthew Morris on June 24, 2010 at the International Double Reed Convention at the
University of Oklahoma.

About the Composer


Daniel Baldwin was born in 1978 in Blackwell, Oklahoma. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Bachelor of
Arts in Performance from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK, and a MM in Composition with an
emphasis in Wind Band Conducting from Kansas State University. He is currently the Interim Director of Bands at
Garden City Community College as well as Theory and Composition Instructor at Southwest Kansas Music Academy
through Garden City Community College. His primary composition teachers include Craig Weston, Max Ridgway,
Timothy Mahr, and Eric Ewazen.

His music has been commissioned by performers from numerous respected symphonies including the National
Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Valdosta Symphony, Chicago Symphony,
Green Bay Symphony, Wichita Symphony, and Waco Symphony. His music has also been performed at universities and
festivals throughout the U.S. including Wichita State University, Texas Tech University, University of Texas, Southern
Illinois University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Baylor University, Society of Composer's Region VI
conference, MidSouth Horn Conference, Big 12 Trombone Conference, Masterworks Festival, MENC National
Convention, the Midwest Double Reed Conference, and at five International Double Reed Conferences. In 2008, his
"Song of Praise" was selected as a winner of the MENC National Composition Competition. In 2009, his new band
work "At the Foothills of the Adirondacks" was performed at Carnegie Hall. He is the founder and director of the
Western Plains Consortium whose main goal is the creation of new ensemble works. He also has his own band and
choir series entitled "Pathways" through Imagine Music publishing which has released almost two dozen band and
choir pieces to date.
