Due to recent event and constraints in social gatherings I was only able to gather these 8 words while observing my daughter through phone conversations with her friends. Reflective Discussion To be completely honest, I have been exposed to all of these words from prior conversations with my daughter and her friends. However, I do remember when I first hear such words and think to myself, what are they saying over there? It wasn’t until I really looked back at the words that we use to say when I was younger, things like the bomb, bad, and have a cow. These words in order meant that’s awesome, good, and to be upset. I think teenagers have their own meaning and words as a way of expressing themselves in different ways. It can also be used to represent status and to be cool. Adults and other students who are unaware of the meaning are seen as not keeping up with the times. Often some of these words, such as lit, carried a different meaning in my generation. Often times I resort to using context clues to figure out what teenagers are saying with specific words and phrases. The English language is a very fluid language in a sense. Though the majority of the language sees no change over time, there is a portion of the language that is ever changing and adapting to each generation as words are used in a different context and find new meanings. I no longer try to correct my students, current and future, and tell them they are using improper English all the time. Instead I try to understand where they are coming from and allow them to express themselves in the ways they know how.
