In The Modern World (GMATH)

1) The document outlines the grading policy for a Mathematics course during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 60% weight given to class standing based on pre-suspension work and 40% to an online final requirement. 2) The final grade will be 50% of the preliminary grade plus 50% of the tentative final grade, which is based on online learning activities during the quarantine period. 3) Students struggling with internet access have until May 20 to complete activities, and can receive a "No Credit" temporary grade to be changed later upon completion.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

April 16, 2020

Dear GMATH Students,

May the peace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. We hope that you are all in good
health and safe at home.

On April 13, 2020, the SLU Administration released its Supplemental Advisory No. 2 on “Academic
Guidelines for the Remaining Period of the 2nd Semester of AY 2019-2020.” The Commission on Higher
Education also released CHED COVID Advisory No. 6 on April 14, 2020 containing guidelines for higher
education institutions. In connection with these, we would like to inform you of the agreements made by
the faculty of the Department of Mathematics regarding the computation of your grades in Mathematics
in the Modern World (GMATH).

First, in the computation of your Tentative Final Grade or TFG, we will be using the weight
distribution of 60% for the Class Standing and 40% for the Final Requirement. Your class standing would
be based on your quizzes, seatworks, assignments and projects before the start of the class suspension (if
there are any), together with the graded learning reinforcement activities given during the Enhanced
Community Quarantine (ECQ) period. The final requirement is being designed and deliberated upon by
your faculty which will be given through Messenger, Google Classroom, LMS or other platforms being
used by your instructors. The coverage of it would be logic, problem solving and consumer math. Details
will be released as soon as they are available.

Second, the computation of your Final Grade (FG) will be 50% of your Prelim Grade (PG) plus
50% of your Tentative Final Grade (TFG). Note that although we are giving a 50% weight to the Tentative
Final Grade, this grade is based on several learning reinforcement activities assigned during the ECQ
period, where you are guided by the learning materials and modules while answering questions/problems
assigned to you and while solving at your own pace. We believe that despite the circumstances you are
in, you will still be able to turn in the activities with relatively high marks.

With regards to the learning reinforcement activities given to you during the ECQ period, rest
assured that we do understand your situations. As stated in the SLU Advisory, those who have internet
connectivity and are capable of submitting online the learning reinforcement activities and final
requirement, they may do so. Those who are having difficulties shall be given until May 20, 2020 to
complete all their graded learning reinforcement activities and final requirement. No deductions would
be given if they are submitted late. Please do reach out to us, your GMATH instructors, if you have any
concerns about the requirements and their submission.

On-line submission of grades will be from May 21-30, 2020. If you could not immediately comply
with the requirements by May 20, 2020, you would be given a “No Credit” as your “temporary” grade. A
grace period of 2 months would be given to you to complete it if you will enroll for the Short Term period.
If you will not be enrolling for the Short Term, you will be given until the end of the First Semester of SY
2020-2021 to complete them.

Concerns regarding absences are currently being addressed by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA),
particularly for students who are marked “FOR CLEARANCE” and “DROPPED.” Those who have reached
the maximum number of absences will be given a grade of “D”. Appeals should be addressed to the OSA.

Learning is not plainly confined in the classroom. They may be done using other medium. Thus,
the decision of the 50% PG plus 50% TFG as your final grade was decided upon to appreciate the efforts
you have been exerting for the online or modified learning.

Thank you very much and God be with you always.
