What Is Stoichiometry? Stoichiometry Is The Quantitative Study of Reactants and Products in A Chemical Reaction

Stoichiometry is the quantitative study of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. It involves using molar ratios, molar masses, balancing chemical equations, and unit conversions to determine the amount of products that can be formed from given amounts of reactants. Thermic fluid heaters are industrial heating equipment that circulate a heat transfer fluid to heat desired processes instead of using steam. The fluid is heated in the thermic fluid heater and then circulates to transfer heat before returning to be reheated. Thermic fluid systems are used in various industries and offer advantages over steam like lower maintenance and no water treatment requirements.

MODULE 3

What is stoichiometry?
Stoichiometry is the quantitative study of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
Given : Amount of reactants
Question: how much of products can be formed.
Example
2 A + 2B 3C
You will need to use
 molar ratios,
 molar masses,
 balancing and interpreting equations, and
 conversions between grams and moles.
Balance the chemical equation correctly
Using the molar mass of the given substance, convert the mass given to moles.
Construct a molar proportion (two molar ratios set equal to each other)
Using the molar mass of the unknown substance, convert the moles just calculated to mass.
 Need of Stoichiometric Calculations of Fuels
Air–fuel ratio (AFR) is the mass ratio of air to a solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel present in a
combustion process.
The combustion may take place in a controlled manner such as in an internal combustion engine
or industrial furnace, or may result in an explosion (e.g., a dust explosion, gas or vapour
explosion or in a thermobaric weapon).
The air-fuel ratio determines whether a mixture is combustible at all, how much energy is being
released, and how much unwanted pollutants are produced in the reaction
THERMIC FLUID HEATERS
A thermic fluid heater is industrial heating equipment, used where only heat transfers are desired
instead of pressure.
In this equipment, a thermic fluid is circulated in the entire system for heat transfers to the
desired processes.
Combustion process heats up the thermic fluid and this fluid carries and rejects this heat to the
desired fluid for concluding the processes.
After rejecting it, this fluid comes back again to the thermic fluid heater and this cycle goes on.
A typical thermal fluid system is comprised of four main components:
 Thermal fluid heater
 Thermal fluid circulating pump
 Expansion tank
 User
Some common thermal fluids include:
Dow Dow therm A, G, RP
Monsanto Therminol 55, 59, 66
Paratherm NF, HE
Petro Canada Calfo AF, Purity FG

Types of industries that make use of the thermal fluid heater systems available from Sigma
Thermal:
Food processing plants, Rubber and plastics processing, Rigid packing companies, Publishing
and print industries, Timber processing plants, Metal fabrication and finishing services, Paper
production companies, Textile processing facilities, Automobile manufacturing plants, Natural
gas processing & transmission, Crude oil extraction, processing, & transmission
Why use thermal fluid instead of steam?
 No corrosion or freezing concerns
 Simple circuit; no blow downs, steam traps, or condensate return systems
 Minimal maintenance
 No hand-hole gasket replacement ▫ No re-tubing
 No water treatment requirements
 High operating temperatures obtained with minimal system pressures (system pressure
drop only).
 If a process requires heating and cooling, it may be done with a single fluid.
