Lesson Plan Outline Life Cycle of A Frog

This 3 day lesson plan teaches 1st grade students about the life cycle of frogs. On day 1, students are introduced to the frog life cycle through interactive websites and a video. Day 2 includes rewatching the video and taking a quiz to reinforce learning. Students also get to touch jelly material representing frog eggs. Day 3 has students creating their own frog life cycle book by coloring, cutting and labeling the stages. The goal is for students to understand the changes frogs undergo and that all living things experience life cycles.

Lesson Plan Outline

Lauryn St. Jean – Amanda Pise

Unit Topic: Science

Grade: 1

Lesson Topic: Life Cycle of a Frog

Lesson Objectives: Students will identify the series of changes that a frogs through in its life
cycle. Students will review the changes by participating in interactive websites using games and
videos to further their knowledge of a frog’s life cycle.

Instructional Technique:

Day 1: Introduction to the life cycle of a frog using the step by websites explaining the
lifecycle. (interactivesites.com) Then show a video relating to the stages of a frog’s life cycle.
(turtlediary.com)

Day 2: Show the video again as a refresher and introduction. (turtlediary.com) The
students will take the video quiz at the end of the video. The game will hopefully refresh the
student’s memory to see what they remember about the frog’s life cycle. Then the students will
be able to have hands on activity with a jelly material so they can feel what the “frog eggs”
would feel like.

Day 3: Students will work on a worksheet of a frog’s life cycle where they will make
their own cycle by coloring, cutting and labeling it.

Instructional Materials: jelly material, frog life cycle worksheet, interactive websites

Theoretical Perspective: This information is important for students to learn because they should
recognize that we share our Earth with animals. All living things have a life cycle so it is
important for students to see humans and animals create new lives.
Lesson Plan Outline

Procedure:

Day 1:

 The teacher will ask students what they already know about frogs.
 The teacher will write down students’ ideas on the board for the class to see.
 As a class the teacher will show the life cycle of a frog by using a website that breaks it
up into stages that explains each. (interactivesites.com)
 Then students together will watch video of the frog.

Day 2:

 Students will independently watch the video from the previous day showing a frog’s life
cycle.
 When the video is over the students will be guided through a quiz provided at the end of
the video.
 The teacher should be supervising the students while taking the quiz so they will have the
help they need to complete it.
 After students have completed the quiz, the teacher will demonstrate the jelly material in
relation to the eggs of frogs.
 Allow students to form groups and provide them with the jelly material so that they can
touch it.
 The teacher should then have the students record their reactions to the texture of the jelly.
 If there is time share the findings with the class, if not share on Day 3.

Day 3:

 Recall/flashback to the feeling of the jelly.

 Share findings with class that they recorded.
 Teacher will provide the students with a handout which will allow them to color, draw,
and label the stages of the life cycle of a frog.
 They will construct their own book with this handout

Adaptations for different learners: All students will be given the opportunity to work with
partners when working on the worksheet to assemble their frog life cycle book. Pairing partners
according to the teacher will give the students to work with other students that could benefit and
build from each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Independently the students should work on
the quiz so that they are focusing in on what they actually learned or know, however; the
teachers guidance twill be provided around them.

Evaluation:

Students will identify the series of changes that a frogs through in its life cycle. Students
will review the changes by participating in interactive websites using games and videos to
further their knowledge of a frog’s life cycle.

Students will meet this objective by watching the video of the life cycle of a frog numerous times
as well as participating in the interactive website with the quiz; students should get at least 75%
of the quiz correct. Students will also meet this objective by completing the assembly of the life
cycle worksheet correctly in the order of the stages.
