Mr. Zakaria bin Abdul Hamid, a senior assistant at SK Sri Bemban, was interviewed about teaching as a profession. He stated that teaching is a profession like doctors and lawyers that requires intellectual skills, training, ethics, and expertise in a specific field. Some challenges he faces include implementing new Ministry of Education policies and using technology. TASK 1 : INTERVIEW REPORT (20%)

Based on the interview conducted on Mr Zakaria bin Abdul Hamid as the senior
assistant (PK1) of SK Sri Bemban, I have interviewed him concerning on the several issues
in teaching such as:

i. The concept of teaching as a profession

ii. Issues and current challenges
iii. Roles of teachers as a leader in teaching and learning

Profession can be defined as a job that has an important social function in a

community. According to Lieberman (1956), a true profession is a field that has
characteristics such as the importance of intellectual skills, adequate professional training,
service that is needed by the society, enjoys personal and group autonomy, has code of
ethics and own organisation to manage matters related to the profession. According to Mr
Zakaria, teaching is a profession just the way like how doctors cure diseases and lawyers
solving cases. Profession and professionalism are also interrelated in a way that profession
refers to a job or occupation while professionalism comprises all areas of practice of a
particular profession. It requires skills and responsibilities involved in engineering profession.
Professionalism implies a certain set of attitudes.

In the interview, Mr Zakaria explained in order for a job to be called and referred as a
profession, there are several aspects that the job must has. For instance, the must be a
specific course, advance training, code of ethics that need to be followed and must be expert
at the specific field. This concurs to what Lieberman (1956) has stated. Generally, profession
can be simplified as a field that has the aspects of the importance of intellectual skills,
enough training, needed in a society and enjoys personal and group autonomy.

Mr Zakaria also stated that there are several issues and challenges that he had faced
and still facing. He explained that one of the biggest issues he had face was the school
posting. He was first posted in SK Batu Melintang and the environment there was quite
different from the current school he is teaching. Back in 1985, SK Batu Melintang was still
very undeveloped and situated in rural area. The monthly cost just to go back and forth from
home to workplace was already expensive. He also mentioned that there was a major
difference in social when compared to rural and urban community. Rural community tend to
be more laid back and put 100% of trust on teachers to educate their children. On the
contrary, the community in urban areas tend to criticise teachers and disbelieve them in
doing their job. He also mentioned that, that was a case where a parent came to the school
and scolded a teacher because their child reported that a teacher hit his head at school
during assembly even though the real case was not like that.

He also stated that one of the challenges that he still has to face now is the rapid
changes that has been made by the Ministry of Education, such as the implementation
PPSMI, and PAK-21. He mentioned that he has trouble in using technology such as
computer and choosing the best 21st century activities to be used in class. I also clarified him
on the importance of teacher readiness at school whereby teacher must always be ready to
be posted anywhere in the country and must equip themselves with enough knowledge on
the current issues of education. Teachers can also further their skills be it pedagogical or
content knowledge by going to self-improvement courses offered outside.

Mr Zakaria also stated that teacher serves as the planner at school when it comes to
the concepts of teacher as leader at school. In order to lead the school and classroom,
teacher must plan something. For example, lesson plan must be prepared before entering
the class to smoothen the teaching and learning session. Without a proper lesson plan,
teacher will teach based on him or her and it will be hard for teacher to assess their pupils.
He also stated that without the right knowledge to plan your lesson, it will be impossible to
lead the classroom and school.
