Assignment 6

This document contains the solutions to two exercises involving calculations with the normal distribution. Exercise 1.1 contains 5 problems calculating probabilities related to the standard normal distribution. Exercise 1.2 contains 5 problems calculating probabilities and critical values related to normal distributions describing real-world populations. The exercises involve applications such as process control, quality control, and sampling.

Assignment 6

Exercise 1.1

1. P(z > 1.25)=0.89435

2. P(z < -2.3)=0.01072

3. P(-1.5 < z < 0.9)=0.81594-0.06681= 0.74913

4. The value of k such that P(z > k)= 0.96: k=1.75

5. The value of k such that P(-k < z < k)=0.88

Exercise 1.2

1. The diameter of a cylindrical shaft door hinge is normally distributed with a population

mean of 12.8 mm and standard deviation of 0.35mm. The specifications on the shaft are

13 ± 0.15 mm. What proportion of shafts conforms to the specifications?

2. The substance weight of a type of paper follows a normal distribution with a mean of

40 pounds per square inch and a standard deviation of 3 pounds per square inch. What

is the probability that the substance weight of a sample is greater than 45 pounds per

square inch?

3. If the specification in Problem 2 require the substance weight to exceed 37 pounds

per square inch, what portion of the samples is rejected?

4. Consider a normal population with mean u = 86 and standard deviation = 10. If a

random sample of size 58 is selected, what is the probability that the sample mean x will

fall between 84.5 and 88.2?

5. The average life of an industrial equipment that produces a certain product is 12

years, with a standard deviation of 1.7 years. If the average life of this equipment

follows a normal distribution, find the value of x to the right of which 12% of the means

computed from random samples of size 15 would fall.
