13 The Story of Prophet Dawud (As) (David) (January 25 & 26 2014)
2014}
CHAPTER 20
DARS ONE
The philistines fought the Jews and ceased from them the Ark of the Covenant.
The template of the original covenant was in there as well as the rod of Musa.
The Canaanites were pagans. They seized the ark of the covenant from the Jews
When they were defeated in battle, they asked their prophet Samuel (AS) to pray to Allah (SWT) for Allah
(SWT) to send them a king.
Samuel (AS) expressed reservations, he asked what if you stop fighting if Allah (SWT) sends you a king?
Have you not thought about the group of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Musa (Moses)?
When they said to a Prophet of theirs, "Appoint for us a king and we will fight in Allah's Way." He
said, "Would you then refrain from fighting, if fighting was prescribed for you?" They said, "Why
should we not fight in Allah's Way while we have been driven out of our homes and our children
(families have been taken as captives)?" But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned
away, all except a few of them. And Allah is All-Aware of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-
doers).
(Al-Baqarah 2:246)
After they asked for a king, Samuel (AS) said Allah (SWT) has appointed Saul as their king.
They asked how Saul could be the king when he has not been given wealth.
And their Prophet (Samuel) said to them, "Indeed Allah has appointed Talut (Saul) as a king over
you." They said, "How can he be a king over us when we are better fitted than him for the
kingdom, and he has not been given enough wealth." He said: "Verily, Allah has chosen him
above you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah grants His
Kingdom to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower."
(Al-Baqarah 2:247)
The Jews were uncomfortable with Allah's (SWT) decision to appoint Saul as the king.
They objected because they claim Saul did not have enough wealth.
Some people are so evil they want to tell Allah (SWT) whom to bless.
But Allah chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.
(Al-Baqarah 2:105)
When Saul was chosen to be king, he set out with a big army.
He said they are only allowed to drink from the hollow of their hands.
They are not allowed to drink until their bellies are full.
Then when Talut (Saul) set out with the army, he said: "Verily! Allah will try you by a river. So
whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me, and whoever tastes it not, he is of me, except him who
takes (thereof) in the hollow of his hand." Yet, they drank thereof, all, except a few of them. So
when he had crossed it (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: "We have no
power this day against Jalut (Goliath) and his hosts." But those who knew with certainty that they
were to meet their Lord, said: "How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allah's
Leave?" And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).
(Al-Baqarah 2:249)
Whoever drinks more than a hollow of his hand is not of Saul (AS).
Saul (AS) and his army made a dua before the battle started.
And when they advanced to meet Jalut (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: "Our Lord! Pour
forth on us patience, set our feet firm and make us victorious over the disbelieving people."
(Al-Baqarah 2:250)
When the two armies came face to face, Goliath asked who will fight him man to man?
In the time of the prophet (SAWS) when the two armies met, the Prophet (SAWS) always sent Ali out for
a duel and he never lost.
The alawites believe Ali is Allah (SWT) incarnate because Ali never lost a single combat.
Saul said he'll give his daughter in marriage to any man who takes on Goliath.
They were thinking they won't live to marry the daughter because Goliath was a giant.
A boy who was about 14 came forward from the army of Saul (AS).
There was a huge roar of laughter from Goliath's army when they saw this.
This was a miracle of David; (AS): as sign that Allah (SWT) is going to bless him with prophet hood.
This is similar to when the rod of Musa (AS) turned into a snake, it was a sign that he was going to be
blessed with prophet hood.
The children of Israel's did not allow them to escape. They went after them and killed them.
And when they advanced to meet Jalut (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: "Our Lord! Pour
forth on us patience, set our feet firm and make us victorious over the disbelieving people." So
they routed them by Allah's Leave and Dawud (David) killed Jalut (Goliath), and Allah gave him
[Dawud (David)] the kingdom [after the death of Talut (Saul) and Samuel] and AlHikmah
(Prophethood), and taught him of that which He willed. And if Allah did not check one set of
people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allah is full of Bounty
to the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
(Al-Baqarah 2:250-251)
The killing of Goliath by David (AS) was told to us by Allah (SWT) in the above-mentioned ayah.
King Saul kept his word and married his beautiful daughter to David (AS).
David (AS) did not allow the fame to get to his head.
David (AS) brought back the glory, which was elusive to them.
Verily, We made the mountains to glorify Our Praises with him [Dawud (David)] in the 'Ashi (i.e.
after the mid-day till sunset) and Ishraq (i.e. after the sunrise till mid-day). And (so did) the birds
assembled: all with him [Dawud (David)] did turn (to Allah i.e. glorified His Praises). We made his
kingdom strong and gave him Al-Hikmah (Prophet hood, etc.) and sound judgement in speech and
decision.
(Sad 38:18-20)
When David (AS) used to recite the psalms, his voice was so beautiful that all the animals used to gather
around him.
Allah (SWT) blessed David (AS) to speak the language of all the animals.
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr: Allah's Messenger ( )ﷺsaid to me, "The most
beloved fasting to Allah was the fasting of (the Prophet) David who used to fast on alternate
days. And the most beloved prayer to Allah was the prayer of David who used to sleep for
(the first) half of the night and pray for 1/3 of it and (again) sleep for a sixth of it."
The Prophet (SAWS) said the best fast is the fast of David (AS).
When David (AS) used to complain that the iron armour is too heavy, Allah (SWT) made the armour light
for him.
David (AS) became very popular and Saul became insecure about the popularity of David (AS).
She broke down in tears and said her father is insecure about David (AS) and fears one day David (AS)
will take away the kingdom from him.
David's (AS) wife found out her own father was planning to kill her husband.
Those who were fed up with the tyranny of Saul defected and joined David (AS).
They marched until they were tired and they laid down to sleep.
While Saul was sleeping, David (AS) cut off a piece of his garment.
When David (AS) cut off a piece of his garment, he woke up Saul.
One day Saul (AS) went to the battlefield and he was killed.
When Saul (AS) got killed, the people rallied around David for him to be their king.
David (AS) was a messenger because he had a book called the zaboor.
David had a son named Solomon (Suleiman), who was intelligent and wise from childhood. When
the following story took place, Solomon was eleven years old.
One day David, was sitting, as usual, solving the problems of his people when two men, one of
whom had a field, came to him. The owner of the field said: "O dear Prophet! This man's sheep
came to my field at night and ate up the grapes and I have come to ask for compensation." David
asked the owner of the sheep: "Is this true?" He said: "Yes, sir." David said: "I have decided that
you give him your sheep in exchange for the field." Solomon, to whom Allah had given wisdom in
addition to what he had inherited from his father, spoke up: "I have another opinion. The owner of
the sheep should take the field to cultivate until the grapes grow, while the other man should take
the sheep and make use of their wool and milk until his field is repaired. If the grapes grow, and
the field returns to its former state, then the field owner should take his field and give back the
sheep to their owner."
David responded: "This is a sound judgment. Praise be to Allah for gifting you with wisdom. You
are truly Solomon the Wise."
David (AS) was so pious that he divided his day into four parts
He grants Hikmah to whom He pleases, and he, to whom Hikmah is granted, is indeed granted
abundant good. But none remember (will receive admonition) except men of understanding.
(Al-Baqarah 2:269)
The third part is to adjudicate in matters concerning the people and to listen to their complaints
He fed his family from what he earned with his own hands.
Their complaint was that one of them has one sheep and his brother's has 99 sheep.
The brother with 99 sheep wanted to take away his brother's one sheep and leave him without any.
David (AS) told the brother with 99 sheep that he was greedy and that he shouldn't take his brothers
sheep.
David (AS) fell down and made tawba because those two men weren't real men. They were angels
coming to test him.
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their
descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?"
They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - Lest you should say on the day of Resurrection,
"Indeed, we were of this unaware."
Adam (AS) asked how long David (AS) will live for.
Allah (SWT) told him 60 years and Adam asked, "only 60 years".
Many times people promise you something and then they deny and don't give it to you.
Adam (AS) did it to David (AS). He promised to give David (AS) 40 of his years.
When the angel of death came to him, he said he doesn't remember making that promise and that he
doesn't' want to die.
The Philistines took away from them the ark of the covenant.
LESSON # 2: EVEN THOUGH THE JEWS ARE COWARDS, THEY ADMITTED THAT JIHAD WAS
THE SOLUTION TO THEIR PROBLEMS
LESSON # 3: THE JEWS OBJECTED TO SAUL AS THEIR KING BECAUSE OF HIS POVERTY
They rebelled and said they have more wealth than him so he can't be their king.
The people of Makkah used to ask why Allah (SWT) sent the Quran down on Muhammad (SAWS).
But Allah chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.
(Al-Baqarah 2:105)
But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said: "How often a small
group overcame a mighty host by Allah's Leave?" And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones,
etc.).
(Al-Baqarah 2:249)
And when they advanced to meet Jalut (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: "Our Lord! Pour
forth on us patience, set our feet firm and make us victorious over the disbelieving people."
(Al-Baqarah 2:250)
A lot of the sahabas were teenagers when they went to the battlefield.
David (AS) killed Goliath when he was a teenager.
LESSON # 10: WHEN DAVID (AS) KILLED GOLIATH, IT WAS A MIRACLE FROM ALLAH (SWT).
THIS WAS TO USHER HIM INTO PROPHETHOOD
LESSON # 11: ALWAYS KILL THE LEADERS OF KUFR SO THAT THE FLOCK BECOME
HEADLESS CHICKENS
When David (AS) killed Goliath, the army of Goliath fled.
But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and attack your religion with disapproval and
criticism then fight (you) the leaders of disbelief (chiefs of Quraish - pagans of Makkah) - for
surely their oaths are nothing to them - so that they may stop (evil actions).
(At-Tawbah 9:12)
LESSON # 12: JEALOUSY IS A HUMAN WEAKNESS
He didn't allow the fame to get to his head because of his taqwa.
LESSON # 14: PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS FEEL INSECURE ABOUT LOSING THEIR POSITIONS
He thought David (AS) was going to use his fame to take his position.
If I were to command anyone to make prostration before another, I would command women to
prostrate themselves before their husbands, because of the special right over them given to
husbands by Allah.
Neither those who disbelieve among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) nor
Al-Mushrikun (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, idolaters, polytheists, pagans, etc.)
like that there should be sent down unto you any good from your Lord. But Allah chooses for
His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.
(Al-Baqarah 2:105)
David (AS) had to make tawba because he only listened to one side of the story when he was tested by
two angels.
LESSON # 19: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE TO PROMISE YOU SOMETHING AND THEN CHANGE
THEIR MIND
When the angel of death came to him, Adam (AS) changed his mind.
DARS 2
You learn from Prophet David (AS) that he did not waste his time
Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaitan (Devil Satan) is ever
ungrateful to his Lord.
(Al-Isra 17:27)
A litigant is a person who takes his case to the courthouse and demand; his rights because he assumed
his oppressed.
The litigants jumped over the wall to see Prophet David (AS).
Prophet David (AS) quickly passed the verdict before hearing the complete story and realized they were
angels.
LESSON #22: EVEN PROPHETS AND MESSAGERS BEG ALLAH TO FORGIVE THEM
Al-Agharr al-Muzani reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "A cloudiness comes over
my heart and I ask for Allah's forgiveness a hundred times a day."
[Sahih Muslim (4/2075) No. 2702, Musnad Ahmad (4/211) No. 17881, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/84) No.
1515]
Those who jumped over the wall were not human beings. They were angels.
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against
yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allah is a Better Protector to both
(than you). So follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you may avoid justice, and if you distort
your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allah is Ever WellAcquainted with what you do.
(An-Nisa 4:135)
This verse is hung up at Harvard University. Harvard University is impressed by this verse
No other verse can surpass this verse in regards to justice. Speak the truth even if it is against yourself;
Speak the truth even if it is against yourself;
Narrated Umm Salama (radi Allahu anha), the wife of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam):
“Allah’s Messenger heard some people quarrelling at the door of his dwelling. He came out and
said, ‘I am only a human being, and opponents come to me (to settle their problem); may be
someone amongst you can present his case more eloquently than the other, whereby I may
consider him true and give a verdict in his favour. So if I give the right of a Muslim to another by
mistake, then it is only a portion of (Hell) Fire, he has the option to take it or give it up (before the
Day of Resurrection).’”
LESSON #24: WHEN YOU ARE A COMMUNITY LEADER, YOU NEED ALOT OF SABR
The two litigants that came to Prophet David (AS) jumped over the wall to see him; this behaviour is not
considered good manners.
Prophet David (AS) didn't get upset with the two litigants that came to see him; he showed amazing sabr.
Abu Hurairah said that the Holy Prophet (Sallaho Alahi Wasallam) said: 'I have been given
preference over the other Prophets in six ways: I have been given the ability to speak concisely;
(This was recorded by Muslim, Tirmizi and Ibn Majah; At-Tirmizi said, 'It is Hasan Sahih')
If you have sabr to deal with animals, you have sabr to deal with people because you often have to give
people the same instructions everyday.
LESSON #25: EVEN THOUGH THE LITIGANTS HAD BAD MANNERS, HE STILL HAD TO GIVE
THEM THE CORRECT VERDICT
Prophet David (AS) was still obligated to give the right verdict even though they had bad manners.
The two men who jumped over wall to complain to Prophet David (AS), was a test because he listened to
only one side of the story.
They came in the form of men but they were angels and It was halal for them to jump over the wall
because they were angels': angels have no human desires.
They came to test Prophet David (AS); "Are you going to listen to both sides of the story before passing
judgement?
When he realized they were angels he quickly made tawba to Allah (SWT).
When people have disputes, they often only want you to hear one side story.
In the UK the law is on the side of the burglar; if the burglar hurts himself, he can sue you.
You are not allowed to put broken glass on the wall because you could hurt a burglar.
And whosoever does not judge by that which Allah has revealed, such are the Zalimun
(polytheists and wrongdoers - of a lesser degree).
(Al-Ma'idah 5:45)
Allah (SWT) does not like the harsh voice; harsh voice is referred to as the voice of the donkey.
Abu Huraira is reported to have heard Allah's Messenger ( )ﷺas saying: Allah does not
listen to anything, (more approvingly) as He listens to a Prophet reciting loudly the Qur'an in a
sweet voice. {Sahih Bukhari Book 4, Hadith 1730}
"And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice. Verily, the
harshest of all voices is the voice (braying) of the ass."
(Luqman 31:19)
Abu Lubabah Bashir bin `Abdul-Mundhir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet
(sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "He who does not recite the Qur'an in a pleasant tone is not of
us.''
[Abu Dawud].
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid, "The recitation of Psalms (David's Qur'an)
was made light and easy for David that he used to have his ridding animal be saddled while he
would finish the recitation before the servant had saddled it."
