The BHA Optimization app allows users to perform offset analysis of BHAs for a given
basin, target formation, rig, hole section, hole size, well, and inclination range. Users
can also filter to BHAs within a given radius of an offset well to analyze the best BHAs
within a given region. Once the BHAs of interest are obtained, users then have the
ability to compare parameters that were used for that BHA using the box and whisker
plots that show the distribution of the drilling parameters for that specific BHA. In
addition to the parameter plots, BHA key performance indicators (KPIs) can also be
plotted such as net ROP, distance drilled, on-bottom %, build rate, turn rate, and slide %
to name a few. A maximum of 4 parameter plots can be added to the BHA Optimization
app within the settings. Below the parameter plots, a table of the filtered BHAs and their
respective KPIs are visible along with a rough BHA schematic. The BHA schematic
allows users to easily identify what type of BHA assemblies are performing the best.
By clicking on the BHA schematic, the detailed BHA is displayed allowing users to
obtain the exact specifications. The columns in the table below the parameter plots can
also be sorted to change the display order of the BHAs in the parameter plots. This
allows users to grade BHAs based on a specific parameter. For example, if the goal is
to find a BHA that drilled the lateral in one run, the users can sort the distance drilled
column and the parameter plots will re-sort to show the BHAs with the highest distance
drilled in descending order.
Filtering BHAs
To filter BHAs, users simply click the corresponding drop down for the filter and select
the desired filter setting. BHAs will automatically be filtered out that do not meet the
filter/s criteria. To filter using an offset well, simply click the offset well filter drop down
Dynamic Filtering
To de-select a BHA users can click the X to the right of the BHA to remove it from the
analysis as shown below.
In order to add additional parameter plots (default is 1), users will need to click the 3
bars in the bottom right-hand corner of the app.
Clicking the settings will bring up the settings dialogue box where the number of
parameter plots (Graph Count) can be customized. Max is 4.
Once the desired number of parameter plots has been selected, users then can select
the desired parameters or KPIs to plot. Simply clicking the drop-down box on the y-axis
will allow the user to select the desired parameter.
Simply clicking the desired column to be sorted will sort the column in either ascending
or descending order. Parameter/KPIs in the plots will automatically resort to reflect the
column sorting. Hovering over each BHA will highlight the selected BHA yellow.
Users can view the BHA details by clicking the BHA schematic.
Users can also click the information icon to the right of the BHA component to view
more details about each component.
Users can view the offset wells when using the offset well filter on a map by clicking
“View Offset Wells” in the app settings.
Users can customize the KPIs in the table view in the app settings.
1. Users can export table view data to a CSV file from the app settings dialogue box.
2. Users can share a screenshot of the app with other Corva users.
3. Users can view the app in full-screen mode.
The Metrics App is one of Corva’s most insightful apps, allowing the user to compare
several different KPIs per well, rig, BHA or hole section over a specified period while
applying multiple filters to refine the data even further. Corva’s Metrics Engine
consumes large amounts of data and computes meaningful metrics in real time. The
KPIs available for analysis are:
This app can be used in multiple ways to optimize operations. A few examples include:
• Compare rig contractor’s performance against other rig contractors in the fleet
• Compare directional company performance in a particular hole size or well
section
• Identify Weight-to-Weight improvement over time per rig or fleet
• Evaluate which motor manufacturer or bit performs the best for a particular target
formation
• Use Metrics Engine for Quarterly Performance Presentations
First, choose which metric you are interested in viewing by clicking the drop-down box
with KPI in yellow. You have the ability to add more metrics by clicking the “+” to the
right of the drop-down box.
Once a KPI is chosen, the user has the ability to view this KPI on a per Well basis, per
Rig, per BHA, or per Hole Section, by clicking the drop-down box:
• Click “Wells (#)” to select/de-select individual wells. You also have the option to
select “All Wells”, “Completed Wells”, or “Active Wells”.
• User can also filter by Rig Release Date, Program, Basin, County, Target
Formation, Rig, String Design, Conventional or Rotary Steerable Systems, and
Directional Company within the app.
• User can add a “Graphing Group” which will color code all like groups for the
following: Basin, Directional Company, Rig, Rig Contractor, String Design, and
Target Formation. For example, the first screenshot below (a.) is Rotary ROP
per well with no graphing group selected. The second screenshot (b.) with
Directional Company chosen as a graphing group will identify the wells drilled
with the two different directional companies.
• The results may be viewed as both a bar chart or a line (when applicable) by
clicking the drop-down box for “Chart Type”.
(a.)
• User may view the data as a “Total” per rig, or “Monthly” or “Quarterly” using the
drop-down box.
• User may also filter by Date Range, Program, Basin, County, Target Formation,
or Rig Contractor.
• This data can be viewed as a bar chart and line chart (when applicable) by
clicking the “Chart Type”, and there is no option for “Graphing Group” when
viewing Rig KPIs.
• User may filter by TD Date (for that hole section), Program, Basin, County,
Target Formation, Rig, Directional Company, Hole Section, Hole Size, and
Inclination.
• Graphing Group is available for Basin, Directional Company, Hole Size, and
Rig.
• User may view this data as both a bar chart or a line chart (when applicable).
All charts will show an “Average”, “Median”, and percent “Change” (if applicable) for the
KPI chosen. If the percent “Change” value is green, it indicates improvement in that
KPI. If it is red, the values are worsening over the timeframe viewed. User can
add/remove a trendline by clicking “Trend” in the legend (if applicable). Also, user can
toggle on/off data by clicking the title in the legend.
Once all appropriate filters are selected, the raw data will be located at the bottom. This
data is available to be exported by clicking the three horizontal lines on the bottom right-
hand corner of the app and selecting Export to CSV.

Surveys.
The Dogleg Severity app displays the DLS vs MD plot to show DLS segments of the
wellbore. A user can select a safe limit as well as display the planned dogleg to
visualize how tortuous the wellbore is. Use this app to locate large doglegs in your
borehole to avoid getting stuck and plan for casing runs.
Settings:
The Slide Sheet app displays all directional slide records detected by the Corva
system. The slides intervals are determined by the Corva Rig Activity Detection
algorithm.
Hovering over each slide in the app will show more details of the slide including Start
Time, End Time, Slide Duration, Weight on Bit, Flow Rate, PDM Diff Pressure, PDM
Torque, and ROP.
The TVD vs MD App displays the well plan vs Actual Surveys to show if there is any
divergence between them. The app has a default 'Drilling Window' that is set to +/- 10 ft,
which can be changed in the settings. Also plotted on this app is the Dog Leg Severity,
and motor yield.
This app allows the user to analyze the planned surveys vs the actual to observe and
divergence between the two as well as provides a TVD window to observe any drift
above/below the plan. Also enables the user to observe high DLS segments of the
wellbore. As well as the tool faces, both MTF and GTF along the well bore.
The application also allows users to visualize parameters such as ROP, Differential
Pressure, Gamma Ray, and WOB.
Settings:
User can change the Graph colors for all visualized data
User can set both X and Y Scale Axis, as well as the Drilling Window margin
The Toolface app displays the toolface which the driller is holding. (If currently sliding) 5
points are displayed on the plot and each one covers 15-second time interval (default
value) of slide drilling. The most recent toolface is shown on the outside ring and past
toolfaces are plotted going inward. At the center of the plot the latest toolface value is
displayed in addition to the type of TF (MTF or GTF). The green window is a ∓30°
margin from the average line of the 5 toolfaces displayed. This is the “safe zone” and
the toolface points outside this area are shown in red to indicate poor toolface control.
The current rig activity is presented on the top left side of the app and the last survey
station data is shown at the top right. In addition, the accuracy of the points is shown on
the top left side. This is a measure of the performance of holding the TFs within the
green zone.
The trend bars shown at the bottom of the app presents the TF accuracy of each slide
This app updates for every new instance of MTF or GTF streamed in.
The application was developed with the intent to provide all field and office personnel
with a real-time visualization of current and previous tool face consistency per
slide. The application’s data can also be utilized in alerts customized to the
expectations set by users.
The application utilizes real-time GTF and MTF and plots the average of the active tool
face every 1 foot of drilling. There is also a rolling average calculation that looks at the
previous 5 feet from the point of the calculation and calculates the average of the last 5
feet of 1 foot averaged tool faces. The rolling average calculation will place a
transparent green block that represents a 30o window on both sides of the calculated
average.
When a 1-foot average tool face is calculated inside the rolling average widow the point
will be plotted as green, if outside the rolling average the point will be red.
The rolling calculation above the tool face plot is the consistency percentage. When a
point is in the rolling average window it is scored 100% if outside of the window it is
scored 0%, the red and green plot allows user to get a quick visualization of how
consistent the Directional Driller is holding his tool face per slide.
Users also have the ability to link this data to alerts, they can set a specific percentage
threshold for when they would like to view this alert. The alert will not fire within the first
5 feet of drilling during a new slide segment, this allows the Directional Driller 5 feet to
line up his tool face before an alert is fired.
We have the ability to set the alerts to any percentage of efficiency as well as any well
bore section. Customers will often set a more stringent tool face efficiency in the curve
section than in the lateral section.
• MD
• Average TF value for that foot of drilling
• Average TF value for the entire slide to that point
Additionally, there is a green line that runs the length of the slide that displays what the
average tool face was for the whole slide.
The shaded purple sections represent rotary drilling.
Settings:
The Rotary Trend Analysis (RTA) app was developed to give users the ability to
correlate how drilling parameters affect the rotary drilling build and walk tendency of a
particular BHA. Historically, drilling parameters have been optimized to increase ROP or
decrease the MSE without considering the effects this has on the build and walk
tendency. With RTA, drilling parameters can be tweaked to manipulate the BHA build
and turn rates while rotary drilling, thereby decreasing the slide % needed to maintain
the desired well path.
In order for a point to be plotted on the RTA application, the interval between the
previous survey depth and current survey depth must be 100% rotary drilling. If the last
stand is 100% rotary drilling, then the turn rate (x-axis) and build rate (y-axis),
expressed in degrees per 100 feet, from the survey are plotted and the median drilling
parameter over the course of that stand of drilling selected as the objective function is
used to color code the data point. The objective function can be selected by clicking the
drop-down in the top right corner of the application. The blue ellipse is one standard
deviation of the build and turn rates, and the white ellipse is two standard deviations of
the build and turn rate. The mean build rate and turn rate are used as the center point
for the ellipses and then 1 or 2 standard deviations of the build and turn rate are used
for the radius of the ellipses. The mean dogleg severity for all of the rotary drilling points
is displayed along with the mean variance of all of the rotary drilling points and the total
number of points.
Rotational Tendency
The Rotational Tendencies application plots the build and turn rate in degrees/100 ft
from surveys that result from 100% rotary drilling versus the measured depth of the
wellbore. This gives users the ability to easily visualize how the rotational tendency has
changed over the course of the wellbore. Users can use this app in conjunction with the
Gamma Vs Depth and MSE vs Depth apps to correlate how formation or drilling
parameters are affecting the build and turn rate. The users have the ability to adjust the
scale of measured depth in the settings of the app as well as change the orientation of
the app.
This app updates after every survey that is seeing 100% rotation.
Settings:
In the settings, the user can toggle on/off optimal parameters for MSE, ROP, or both at
the same time.
The Drilling Performance dials display the comparison analysis between the actual vs.
optimal ROP/MSE comparison to what the ROP/MSE Heatmap is recommending. The
dial can be interpreted using the scale below:
The parameter optimization displays a comparison table of the actual values for WOB,
RPM, and ROP/MSE to the optimal parameters derives from the Heatmap for rotary
drilling. First, the optimal ROP/MSE is located on the Heatmap, then the range of
optimal WOB and RPM are defined based on the optimal ROP/MSE zone. Then the
actual WOB, RPM are given color codes of green, yellow, red based on the comparison
to the optimal WOB, RPM:
Each formation of the selected offsets is analyzed using one of the following objective
functions: (1) maximum ROP, (2) minimum MSE, or (3) maximum value of ROP divided
by MSE. Corva populates the DRM with recommended parameters for each formation,
as seen below:
After each formation has been drilled in the current well, then the actual values are
available for viewing by hovering over the appropriate row as shown in the highlighted
blue portion of the above screenshot. A Green, Yellow, Red scoring system is used to
assess differences in actual values compared to values from the best offset, as
indicated in the top right-hand corner.
The Gamma Ray vs Depth app displays the current Gamma Ray measurements on a
Depth scale. The GR Offset is set in the BHA and commonly pulled from the BHA
Report.
Settings:
The Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) Heat Map displays a tri-axial cross plot that
shows the combination of the RPM (X-Axis) and WOB or Diff Pressure (Y-Axis) that
yields the calculated MSE value (Z-Axis). The MSE Value is displayed as a heatmap
color with Green being lower MSE and Red being Higher MSE. The app allows the user
to determine the 'Sweet Spot' of drilling which is the combination of RPM and WOB/Diff
Pressure to achieve the lowest cluster of MSE values. The user can toggle between
WOB or Diff Press with the drop-down box on the bottom right.
This plot displays parameters from the top of the current formation interval to present
depth. Only rotary drilling parameters are shown, slide drilling is omitted. This plot
clears after passing every formation top. Once in the lateral, the plot will clear every
1,000ft to give the user the most relevant data.
The exact combination of parameters can be observed by hovering over the plot to
display the results. The user can view the 'Heat Map' scale in the bottom right corner of
the app. The dynamic scale reflects the depth window displayed at the bottom of the
app, obtaining the minimum and maximum from the heatmap values itself.
On the right-hand side of the app a WOB or Diff Pressure frequency is shown allowing
the user to see which parameter the driller spent the most time at in the displayed
interval.
The Rate of Penetration (ROP) Heat Map displays a tri-axial cross plot that shows the
combination of the RPM (X-Axis) and WOB or Diff Pressure (Y-Axis) that yields the
calculated ROP value (Z-Axis). The ROP Value is displayed as a heatmap color with
Red being lower ROP and Green being Higher ROP. The app allows the user to
determine the 'Sweet Spot' of drilling which is the combination of RPM and WOB or Diff
Pressure to achieve the highest cluster of ROP values.
This plot displays parameters from the top of the current formation interval to present
depth. Only rotary drilling parameters are shown, slide drilling is omitted. This plot
clears after passing every formation top. Once in the lateral, the plot will clear every
1,000 ft to give the user the most relevant data.
The exact combination of parameters can be observed by hovering over the plot to
display the results.
On the right-hand side of the app a WOB or Diff Pressure frequency is shown allowing
the user to see which parameter the driller spent the most time at in the displayed
interval.
The MSE vs Depth app displays an MD based plot showing the calculated Downhole
Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) values. It also displays a depth-based Rate of
Penetration (ROP) curve to correlate MSE and ROP Trends.
Corva calculates downhole MSE using a tared downhole Weight on Bit and Differential
Pressure. This method utilizes the comparison between off-bottom and on-bottom data
for Hookload and Surface Pressure. Downhole Torque is calculated using the motor
specifications when a motor is present in the BHA or a tared downhole torque when no
motor is run. A drilling efficiency factor of 0.35 is applied to our raw MSE to allow the
comparison to UCS data per Dupriest (SPE 92194).
This app will display all MSE & ROP from Surface to current Bit Position.
The user can import offset MSE or UCS curves using the "Import" function built into the
app.
The user can also now export out MSE vs Depth into a .csv file.
Settings:
Show Imported UCS: Allows user to toggle on/off imported UCS values
Show ROP: Allows user to toggle ROP on/off
Formation Tops: Allows user to toggle Formation tops on/off
Add Offset well MSE: User can toggle on/off offset well MSE
Show Gamma Ray: User can toggle on/off Gamma Ray
The automated drill off test or Founder point application is designed to help users find
the point of diminishing returns in terms of WOB and ROP.
This app allows the user to analyze the WOB vs ROP and visualize where adding WOB
does not lead to increased ROP.
User can hover over any point on the chart and view the WOB and ROP for each
specific point on the application.
The application is analyzing at the last 250’ of drilling and updates every 5’ or 30
minutes, whichever comes first.
The Parameter Crossplot can be used to correlate drilling parameters of specific hole
sections or depth range to an objective function for multiple offset wells. For each set of
x & y drilling parameters, the median of the objective function (ROP, Gamma Ray, MSE,
MD, Wells) of all the selected wells is used to color code each parameter bin. Hovering
over each bin will display the following data: # of data points used to color code bin, x
parameter value, y parameter value, objective function median. The type of drilling
activity (All drilling point, rotary drilling, slide drilling) can be selected in the bottom left of
the app. The distribution of points displayed can also be customized to eliminate outliers
of the drilling data. By default, the bottom 5% and the top 5% of the objective function
data are thrown out.
The parameter comparison app is the best app to compare the performance of your
current well against the offsets of your choosing. The app automatically plots the active
well for the selected asset in cyan. To add offset wells, select the (+) button to the right
of “Offset Wells” and choose your desired offsets. Up to five offsets can be plotted at
once. Warning: If the selected offsets do not reach the same depth as the subject well
they will not plot in the app. The user has the ability to add tracks with parameters that
they desire. Press the “+ Add Track” button to add more tracks to the app. The
following parameters are available:
To the right of the tracks the difference between the offset and actual are displayed for
the selected range. The user can select between displaying the % difference or the
median difference between the subject and offset.
In App Settings:
Real-Time Update: Toggling the Real-Time Update off will disable the app from
updating in real-time. The standard depth range in real-time mode is the past 100ft of
drilling.
Look Ahead: User can select a look ahead depth which will plot the offset wells the
desired depth ahead of real-time.
Median Calculation: User can change the range which the app will calculate the median
difference.
Drilling State: User can select to only show rotary drilling, slide drilling or all drilling data.
When either rotary or slide drilling is selected, the undesired data will be masked.
Correlation Mode: User can select to correlate Offsets to Subject by either Measured
Depth or True Vertical Depth.
To apply a depth shift to an offset well, select the offset name at the top of the app. In
the pop-up window a “Depth Shift” value can be entered to shift the parameters for that
offset. To shift forward enter a positive number, to shift backwards enter a negative
number. After pressing save the shift will be applied.
Settings:
In the settings of the app the user can change the line type and weights for the subject,
offsets, BHA and Formation lines. In addition, you can also change the median
calculation between median % difference and numerical median.
Bit Hydraulics
The Bit Hydraulics app provides standard calculations for Bit Hydraulic Horsepower per
Square inch of bit area, Bit Nozzle Velocity, Jet Impact Force, ECD at Casing and at Bit,
and Motor Differential Pressure.
This provides a 2 hour trend for each parameter for easy visualization and interpretation
of changes to the hydraulics program.

User can change graph line color
The Circulating Pressure Loss App displays the pressure losses for each component in
the system. This incorporates surface equipment, inside drillstring, BHA components, bit
and annulus pressure losses. This Total Pressure Loss is displayed in comparison to the
SPP which is being recorded on the rigsite.
The "pressure loss" plot demonstrates the individual proportion of frictional pressure loss
through each component in the loop, including surface equipment, drill string, bit and
annulus. The tool joint & rotational effects have also been properly considered. The API
13D (2010) model is used for frictional pressure loss in the pipes and annulus sections.
And for special tools such as MWD, RSS, Agitator, and no-load PDM pressure losses, a
quadratic relationship between flowrate vs pressure loss data are used to determine their
pressure loss. In addition, the PDM differential pressure is computed based on the "tare"
concept and is added to the entire
system pressure loss.

The Circulation Times and Volumes app was developed to provide all field and office
personnel with real-time calculations of current fluid volumes, times needed to circulate,
and number of strokes required for specific volumes at the current bit depth (MD).
This application calculates the volume (bbls), duration (min), and number of strokes for
fluid to circulate at the current flow rate (gpm) for:
• Surface to Surface
• Surface to Bit
• Bottoms Up (or bit to surface)
The calculations:
• take into consideration tool joint IDs/ODs.
• are not populated for casing runs.
• do not account for hole washout.
This app displays the current wells mud weight vs depth as it logged and tracked in
Corva.
This application was created to allow user to visualize their current mud weight changes
and we compare them to offset or any other wells they would like to select.
User can select between the last 5 wells drilled by that rig, all active wells for their
operator, and manual, which allows users to select any wells from any rigs within Corva
for the particular operator.
Settings:
Users can select to show the legend or not, their mode, as well as all of the rigs or wells
they would like to display.
The Drilling Motor output app displays the Drilling Motor output values for Differential
Pressure, Motor RPMs and Motor Torque using the specifications taken from the Mud
Motor Spec sheet.
The Corva Operating Differential pressure is derived by comparing the Off-bottom SPP
to the On-Bottom SPP to calculate the delta P. The output for Motor Torque is
calculated based on the Corva Operating Diff.
The Motor RPM is determined by the Rev/Gal coefficient displayed by a white horizontal
line to the left.
The linear Motor Torque curve, shown as a Red line, is taken from the Motor Spec
sheet and input into the motor settings under the BHA section displaying Max Torque at
Max Diff.
The Maximum ODP line displays the max allowable Diff Pressure on the motor from the
Motor spec sheet. The Transitional Diff Pressure line is 90% of the Max allowable Diff
which displays the 'Stall Zone' of the Motor.
Settings:
The Drilling Motor overview app displays the Current Corva Operating Differential
Pressure (ODP) observed through the Mud Motor as well as a historical view of the Diff
Pressure.
The Differential Pressure dial displays the current ODP through the motor in relation to
the transitional zone and maximum allowable diff pressures. The dial colors observed
correlate to:
The Historical Trend plot below displays the recent ODP trend analysis. This enables
the user to observe if the Motor has been over-ran in the Transitional or Max allowable
Zones. The user can hover over the plot and observe the actual ODP value for that time
period.
This app displays days vs. depth and cost with the ability to track current performance
compared to AFE (days and cost).
The Days vs. Depth/Cost App automatically displays the current hole depth vs. the
number of days since spudding the well and/or the cost associated with each day. Also,
if AFE information is provided (days and/or costs), this app tracks the planned (AFE) vs.
actual days/costs and calculates if the subject well will TD over or under the plan (%
over/under).
Settings:
The user has multiple options for turning on and off specific data displayed in the app
through the Settings tab.
• Active Wells – displays all active well’s DvD within the company
• Last 5 Wells - per Rig
• Manual – allows user to select offset wells (active or complete) for DvD
comparison purposes. User can either select all wells per rig or select
individual wells.
Show Flat Time - User can toggle on/off flat time. On-bottom time includes connection
times.
• Well Cost – This includes your AFE cost and actual (daily) costs. Also, when
toggled “on,” user has the ability to reverse cost on the secondary axis. TIP:
If user only wants to view cost vs. day, toggle off “Show Well Depth”. User
can “Reverse Well Cost Axis” as needed.
• Well Depth – This includes AFE days and current days vs. depth
• Bit Depth – Easily helps user identify trips in and out the hole. Also includes
casing trips.
• Casing set depth indicators
• Drillstring/BHA indicators
• Use rig up start time as the start date for DVD
Rig Activity
The Rig Activity app displays the time breakdown for each rig activity that its being
calculated via Corva rig activity algorithm. It can display the last 24 Hours or the last 2
tours of rig-activity time breakdowns. The data can be viewed as a pie chart or in a
tabular format.
The smaller pie graphs display the data separated into day crew & night crew to show a
more granular view of the time breakdown per tour. This tour split defaults to 6 - 6 crew
changes.
The user can hover over the segments of the pie graph to get more information about
the rig activity and time breakdowns.

The Automated Rig Operations Time analysis app displays specific rig activity timings
based on the user selection. The user has a variety of different Rig operations to
choose from:
Slips to Slips – Time from string in slips to out of slips while making drilling connection
On-Bottom-to-Slips – Time from off bottom to in slips while making drilling connection
Slips-to-On-Bottom – Time from off the slips to back on bottom while making drilling
connection
Weight-to-Weight – Time from when the string is picked up off bottom to back on
bottom during a drilling connection. This setting will break down the complete
connection within the single bar. (Bottom to Slips, Slips to Slips, Slips to Bottom)
Tripping In (Connection) – Time from string in slips to out of slips while making
tripping in connection
Tripping In (Running) – Time to run stand into the hole while tripping
Tripping Out (Connection) - Time from string in slips to out of slips while making
tripping out connection
Tripping Out (Running) – Time to pull stand out of the hole while tripping
The user can set a Target line for a specific event or rig activity to track rig operations
speed versus your goal. An operator can also set a company operations time goal to be
plotted on every users account. Blue bars indicate that the operation occurred during
the day tour, Purple for night tour. Averages and 30 day trend is displayed at the bottom
of the app.
This app allows the user to drill down into the data to determine any sources of lost time
and NPT.

The Buckling Load Analysis displays the Effective Axial load applied to the drillstring in
relation to the Sinusoidal (2-D) and Helical (3-D) Buckling limits which are shown by the
yellow and red lines, respectively. This can be used to determine if buckling is occurring
in the drillstring.
Wu (1992) and He & Kyllingstad (1995) are used to compute the buckling load in
vertical and deviated orientations, respectively.
These Hookload values are computed with the internal Corva's Soft String T&D model.
The effect of pipe rotation and axial movement is incorporated in the friction factor for a
more accurate prediction.
Settings:
The Downhole WOB/TOB Transfer app analyzes the weight transfer and torque transfer
between the surface measured values to the downhole calculated values using the Corva
"Tare" method. The values for Torque and WOB are measured and compared between
the off bottom and on bottom values.
The difference between model and tare WOB is normalized by a factor of 30,000 lbs.
(e.g. diff = 3,000 lbs -> normalized diff = 3000/30000 = 1/10):
The Friction Factor app allows the user to select a defined friction factor to be applied to
the model calculations. (Only changing the cased hole friction factor will affect the
models) It also compares the user-defined friction factor for the Casing, Open Hole
Slack-off, Pickup and Rotating to the Corva calculated friction factors. Corva calibrates
FF based on rig activity and uses the actual data to determine the proper friction factor
for the wellbore:
• Cased Hole FF: Calibrates during Circulating + Rotary off bottom inside of
Casing
• Open Hole PU: Calibrates during Axial Movement upward
• Open Hole SO: Calibrates during Axial Movement downward
• Open Hole Rotating: Calibrates during Circulating + Rotary Off Bottom in Open
Hole
This type of comparison analysis allows the user to determine the current wellbore
conditions based on the calculated friction factors for the Open Hole section.
The Hookload Broomstick plot displays the Pick-Up, Slack-Off, & Rotating-Off-Bottom
Hookload values in comparison to the predicted model lines. Friction Factor sensitivity is
applied to the Pick-up and Slack-off values in increments of 0.10 FF beginning at 0.15
and ending at 0.45.
The plot enables the user to have real-time visual trend identification for hole problems
or poor hole cleaning.
The User can toggle on/off all values to on the app itself by clicking the legend. They
also can completely turn on/off reaming values to display on the graph as well under the
settings tab. These Hookload predicted curves are from the internal Corva T&D model.
The user can import 3rd party model lines if desired. This app is updated every 50 feet
of drilling and every 500 feet of tripping.
(NOTE: This plot will automatically clear when a new Drill String is added to the system
or a new casing string is run.)
Settings
Advanced Settings:
Project to TD – In the settings the user can select to project hookload model lines to TD.
This setting will only work once the lateral section of the well has been reached. (Over
80 deg)
The Torque Trend Broomstick plot displays the actual Rotating-Off-Bottom Torque
values in comparison to the predicted Rotate-Off-Bottom Torque values. Friction Factor
sensitivity is applied to the model predicted Rotate-Off-Bottom Torque values in
increments of 0.10 FF beginning at 0.15 FF and ending at 0.45 FF.
This app allows the user to determine the condition of the wellbore based on the Friction
Factor sensitivity analysis.

Advanced Settings:
The von Mises stress analysis app allows the user to analyze the von Mises stress, and
its components (axial, torsional, hoop, radial and bending stresses), applied to the drill
string. It shows the comparison of the von Mises stress to the Yield stress limit as well
as 80% and 60% of the Yield Stress limit.
This allows the user to analyze the amount of stress on the drill string in relation to its
failure limits. These Hookload values are computed with the internal Corva's Soft String
T&D model. The effect of pipe rotation and axial movement is incorporated in the friction
factor for a more accurate prediction.
Settings:
The Real Time Mud Weight Window app displays an MD based plot with the current
mud weight and ECD at the current flow rate. This app also has the ability to display
the mud weight window, including pore pressure (flow), collapse, loss, and fracture
pressure to be able to easily identify the pressure regime throughout the entire wellbore
(if the information is provided).
Settings:
User has the ability to change the orientation of the graph (horizontal or vertical),
change the color of lines and shading of the mud weight window, and the option of
adding formation tops to the graph.
The surge and swab app displays the real-time PU and SO ECD pressure points.
Corva models the predicted pressure gradient lines for various speeds of tripping in and
tripping out:
• 50 fpm
• 100 fpm
• 200 fpm
• 300 fpm
This app also displays the current MW and formation pressure regime if provided (pore
pressure, frac gradients) to create a mud weight window. In settings, the user has the
ability to change the orientation of the graph (horizontal or vertical) and add formation
tops.
The Real-Time Traces app allows the user to plot a single and multiple trace views of
raw WITMSL data, Corva Model Prediction, and offset well information.
Left Axis displays Timescale, followed by Depth scale and finally predicted rig activity.
Settings:
To access the alerts engine, select the ‘Alerts’ tab at the top left corner of your Corva
screen:
Here users will be able to filter all alerts that have fired by alerting level, date range, and
by the specific rig.
To the right of the screen all alerts can be sorted by the latest at the top for all rigs and
alerts you have subscribed to, as well as the ability to search for any specific alerts:
Turn alerts on and off (subscribe): this will allow user to select if they would like the
alert to fire with a minimum notification type of a pop-up and notification sound on their
Corva screen.
The alerts are split into two different categories, ‘Personal Alerts’ and ‘Company Alerts’.
Personal alerts are alerts specific to the users account. Alerts in the personal segment
can be edited by the user. Company alerts are alert set to a default threshold and are
selectable by all users in the company. While the company alerts are visible and
available for all users, they will only fire for users who subscribe to them.
To edit an alert, you must first select the alert you would like to edit from the ‘Company
Alerts’, and click on the three dots on the far right:
The alert will then be copied into your personal alerts, where you can then click the
three dots again, and select ‘Edit’:
Simple – Will allow users a drop-down menu for rules to select from with simple
thresholds
Advanced – Will allow users far more options when creating custom alerts but, will also
be more complicated with the options available. Corva’s alerts team can always help
with alert creation and questions.
The other option for creating new alerts is to use the ‘New Alert’ button in the top right
of the screen and select two different options:
From Template – this will allow users to create a new alert based on Corva created
templates.
From Blank – will allow user to create a new alert from scratch
